The 8-Day Yunnan Birdwatching Tour (Kunming–Baoshan–Gaoligongshan–Dali–Lijiang) is a classic southwest China birding journey that combines high biodiversity hotspots, endemic-rich mountain forests, and iconic plateau wetlands. From the urban lakes of Kunming to the pristine rainforest of Gaoligongshan (高黎贡山), and onward to the cultural landscapes of Dali (大理) and Lijiang (丽江), this itinerary offers one of the most comprehensive birding experiences in China.

Participants will explore a wide range of habitats including subtropical evergreen forests, cloud forests, river valleys, alpine wetlands, and ancient towns. The route is carefully designed to maximize species diversity while maintaining a balanced rhythm between intensive birding sessions and cultural immersion in Bai and Naxi ethnic regions.

Key destinations include Baihualing (百花岭) in Gaoligongshan, one of China’s premier bird photography sites with specialized bird blinds; Erhai Lake (洱海), a vital wintering ground for waterbirds; and Lashihai Wetland (拉市海), a high-altitude lake system famous for migratory flocks and rare wetland species. The tour concludes in Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城), where streams, gardens, and surrounding hills provide excellent final birding opportunities before departure.

    Tour Highlights

    1. China’s Most Diverse Birding Gradient

Experience a complete ecological transition—from Kunming urban wetlands to Gaoligongshan primary rainforest, then to Erhai and Lashihai plateau wetlands—covering one of the richest birding gradients in Asia.

    2. Gaoligongshan (高黎贡山) Birding Paradise

Explore Baihualing (百花岭), a world-class bird photography site with well-established bird blinds. Expect close-range views of pheasants, laughingthrushes, fulvettas, sunbirds, and rare forest specialists such as Blood Pheasant (血雉) and various pheasant species.

    3. Rare and Endemic Species Encounters

High probability sightings of iconic Yunnan species including Fire-tailed Sunbird (火尾太阳鸟), Ladybird Laughingthrush (丽色奇鹛), Purple Cochoa-type forest birds, and a wide range of mixed-species flocks unique to southwestern China.

    4. Erhai Lake (洱海) Wetland Corridor Birding

Bird along one of Yunnan’s most important lake ecosystems, home to Little Egret (白鹭), Black-crowned Night Heron (夜鹭), Purple Swamphen-type birds (紫水鸡), and wintering flocks of gulls and ducks, all framed by Cangshan Mountain (苍山).

    5. Lijiang (丽江) Old Town + Mountain Birding Mosaic

Combine cultural heritage with birding in Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城), Lion Hill (狮子山), Black Dragon Pool (黑龙潭), and Elephant Hill (象山), where urban streams meet forest edge habitats rich in water redstarts, finchbills, and laughingthrushes.

    6. Lashihai (拉市海) High-Altitude Wetland Finale

Conclude the journey in one of Yunnan’s most important migratory bird wetlands, featuring Red-billed Gulls (红嘴鸥), Eurasian Coots (白骨顶), grebes, herons, and seasonal rare migrants with the backdrop of Yulong Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山).

    7. Expertly Designed Birding Flow

Each day follows a professionally structured birding rhythm—early morning peak activity sessions, mid-day forest or cultural transitions, and late-afternoon wetland or canopy birding—maximizing both species diversity and observation quality.

    8. Rich Cultural Integration

Beyond birding, the route includes Bai ethnic villages (白族村), ancient towns, traditional markets, and Tibetan-influenced landscapes, offering a deep cultural dimension alongside wildlife observation.

    1

Arrival in Kunming – Urban Wetland Birding Route (Afternoon Program)

After arriving in Kunming, begin a half-day birding route after lunch, following a smooth westward line from the city center to Dianchi Lake, minimizing backtracking while covering the best urban birding habitats.

    Birding Route Overview (13:30–17:30)

Route: Lunch area (Wuhua/Xishan District) → Green Lake Park → Kunming Flowers and Birds Market → Haigeng Dam → Dianchi Lake shoreline

This route combines urban woodland birding, cultural observation, and large-scale wetland birding, with the best light conditions toward sunset.

Stop 1: Green Lake Park (13:30–14:40) – Woodland + Waterbirds

Located in central Kunming, Green Lake is the ideal first stop after lunch, thanks to its shaded environment and high bird activity in the afternoon.

Enter from the south gate, move through the lake pavilion, and exit from the west side, forming a natural one-way birding loop. The mix of willow trees, shrubs, and open water attracts both passerines and waterbirds.

    Key species:
Red-billed Gull (seasonal highlight), Light-vented Bulbul, White Wagtail, Japanese White-eye, sparrows

    Highlights:

    • Excellent close-range observation of gulls and urban birds
    • Shaded habitat keeps bird activity stable after midday
    • Good photography conditions with softer afternoon light

Stop 2: Kunming Flowers and Birds Market (14:50–15:30) – Bird Identification Stop

A short transfer brings you to this traditional market, which serves as a quick educational stop rather than a pure birding site.

Focus on the trees around the market edges for wild species, while inside, compare captive birds with their wild counterparts to improve identification skills.

    What to observe:

    • Wild species: bulbuls, wagtails, sparrows
    • Captive comparisons: white-eyes, thrushes, munias

Note: Observe only—avoid buying or interacting with captive wildlife.

Stop 3: Haigeng Dam (15:50–17:10) – Dianchi Core Birding Site

This is the highlight of the day, offering panoramic views over Dianchi Lake and large تجمعs of waterbirds.

Walk along the dam from the central հատված toward quieter western sections, stopping at feeding areas and railings for different perspectives.

    Key species:
Red-billed Gull (huge flocks in winter), Eurasian Coot, Mallard, Common Merganser, occasional gull diversity

    Highlights:

    • Peak bird activity between 16:00–17:00
    • Best location for flight photography and flock behavior
    • Scenic backdrop with the “Sleeping Beauty” profile of the Western Hills

Stop 4: Dianchi Lake Shoreline (17:10–17:30) – Sunset Finish

End the day along the quiet lakeshore below the dam, focusing on close-range waterbird behavior as light softens toward sunset.

This short final session allows you to complete species observations, enjoy reflections on the water, and capture atmospheric sunset birding moments.

    Typical species:
Coots, ducks, gulls, occasional diving birds

    Day

    2

    Kunming → Baoshan → Baihualing

Morning take the high-speed train from Kunming to Baoshan, then drive into the western slopes of the Gaoligong Mountains. The landscape gradually shifts from urban plains to dense evergreen forest, marking entry into one of China’s richest birding regions. Arrive at Baihualing in the afternoon and check in at a local guesthouse near key birding areas (Lao Hou Jia / Jiangjiazhai sector).

After arrival, do a short orientation walk around the guesthouse and nearby access routes, including the No.1 Pond (1号塘) entrance and reception area. This helps familiarize with terrain, trails, and early bird activity in forest edge habitats, where bulbuls, laughingthrushes, sibias, and parrotbills may already be active.

Later, prepare field gear for the following intensive birding days: review target species, set camera to silent mode, prepare 400mm+ lens, binoculars, rain gear, and neutral-colored clothing suitable for forest hides. In the evening, enjoy a Lisu farmhouse dinner, followed by a guide briefing to confirm pond assignments, shooting order, and field rules. Overnight stay in Baihualing village.

Baihualing (百花岭) → Baoshan (保山) → Dali (大理) — Transfer + Cangshan Birding + Old Town

Early morning 07:00–07:30 breakfast and check-out in Baihualing (百花岭, Gaoligongshan 高黎贡山 area), followed by a 3-hour drive from 07:30–10:30 through Nujiang Gorge (潞江坝怒江峡谷) and Baoshan Basin (保山坝子) to reach Dali Old Town (大理古城) around midday. The drive offers classic southwest Yunnan landscapes with river canyons, terraced valleys, and transitional mountain ecosystems.

After lunch and short rest in Dali, afternoon birding begins on Cangshan Mountain (苍山) from 13:30–17:30. The route starts at Cangshan Nature Imaging Museum (苍山自然影像博物馆) and Shuangyuan Stream (双鸳溪), where mixed forest and stream habitat supports species such as Collared Finchbill (凤头雀嘴鹎), Streak-breasted Scimitar Babbler (斑胸钩嘴鹛), Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush group (棕头雀鹛类), and occasional Blue-throated Sunbird (蓝喉太阳鸟). Bird activity increases in shaded understory and canopy layers as temperatures drop in late afternoon.

The walk continues along Shuangyuan Stream Trail (双鸳溪步道) between 15:00–16:10, a classic stream corridor where White-capped Water Redstart (白冠燕尾), Blue-fronted Redstart (蓝额红尾鸲), and Purple-backed Thrush (紫啸鸫) are commonly observed along rocks and slow-flowing water, often at close range. Scimitar babblers and small flycatchers move actively through the dense riverside vegetation.

From 16:10–17:30, birding shifts to Wuwei Temple (无为寺) forest zone, a quieter ancient woodland area ideal for late-day activity. Key species include Fire-tailed Sunbird (火尾太阳鸟) around flowering shrubs, Black-headed Laughingthrush (黑头奇鹛) in noisy groups, occasional Hoopoe (戴胜), and woodpecker species in old-growth trees. Rusty-capped Fulvetta (栗臀䴓) may be seen creeping along trunks, while the open ridgeline allows distant views of Erhai Lake (洱海) and Dali Plain in golden light.

At 17:30, return to Dali Old Town (大理古城) for overnight stay, ending the day with sunset over Cangshan and Erhai.

    Day

    6

Dali (大理) → Lijiang (丽江) — Erhai Birding Corridor + Cultural Stops + Transfer

07:30–08:00 depart from Dali Old Town (大理古城) after early breakfast, heading to Chongsheng Temple Three Pagodas (崇圣寺三塔文化旅游区). This short morning stop (08:00–09:30) combines cultural sightseeing with light birding around temple gardens and surrounding trees. Common urban-edge species include Eurasian Tree Sparrow (麻雀), White Wagtail (白鹡鸰), Yellow-billed Grosbeak / Collared Finchbill (凤头雀嘴鹎), and occasional Little Egret (白鹭) near water features. The focus is relaxed observation in a historic Buddhist landscape framed by Cangshan Mountain (苍山).

From 09:30–11:30, continue to Zhoucheng Bai Village (周城白族村), a traditional Bai ethnic settlement known for tie-dye craft (扎染). While exploring courtyards and village lanes, bird activity is steady around farmland edges and bamboo groves. Typical species include Finchbills (雀嘴鹎), Streak-breasted Scimitar Babblers (斑胸钩嘴鹛), Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush group (雀鹛类), and small flocks of sparrows moving through gardens and irrigation channels.

After lunch near Xizhou Ancient Town (喜洲古镇) around 11:30–12:30, birding continues in one of the most important wetland–farmland mosaics along Erhai Lake (洱海). Between 12:30–14:00, explore Xizhou Old Town lanes, ancient fig trees, and lakeside fields. This area supports mixed resident and wetland birds, including Little Egret (白鹭), Black-crowned Night Heron (夜鹭), and frequent Finchbills and bulbuls. The ancient “Big Tree” (大青树) area is especially active for canopy species.

From 14:00–15:30, move to Haishen Peninsula Park (海舌公园), one of the best birding wetlands on Erhai Lake (洱海). This narrow peninsula supports dense reedbeds and shallow water habitats. Key species include Purple Swamphen-type wetland birds (紫水鸡类群, if present), Great Egret / Little Egret (白鹭), Northern Pintail / domestic ducks (绿头鸭), and in winter, large flocks of Black-headed Gulls / Red-billed Gulls (红嘴鸥). Occasional Grey Heron (灰鹤) may appear in quiet marsh zones.

From 15:30–16:30, drive along the Erhai lakeshore corridor toward Shuanglang Ancient Town (双廊古镇), stopping opportunistically at wetlands, reedbeds, and shallow shoreline pools. This moving birding section often produces White Wagtail (白鹡鸰), White-capped Water Redstart-type river birds (白冠燕尾), ducks, gulls, and scattered herons. It is a flexible observation window rather than fixed-site birding.

At 16:30–17:00, short rest in Shuanglang Ancient Town (双廊古镇), with final lake views and equipment organization before departure. Birding may still yield Little Egret or gull flocks along the waterfront.

At 17:00, begin transfer from Shuanglang Ancient Town (双廊古镇) to Lijiang (丽江), approximately 2 hours by road, following the final leg of the Erhai basin northward into the higher elevation valleys of northern Yunnan.

    Day

    7

Lijiang (丽江) — Old Town + Lion Hill + Black Dragon Pool + Elephant Hill Birding

This full-day birding route focuses on the mosaic habitats of Lijiang (丽江), combining ancient town waterways, hillside forests, and wetland parks. It offers one of the best mixed birding experiences in northern Yunnan, where human landscape and natural ecosystems overlap.

    1. Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城) — 07:30–09:30 | 1.5–2 hours | Stream + urban forest birding

Start the morning inside Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城), where a network of canals, ancient trees, and quiet alleyways creates a surprisingly rich birding environment. The best section runs from the northern gate through Yuhe Waterway (玉河走廊) to Sifang Street (四方街) and the quieter Qiyi Street lower section (七一街下段).

Typical species include Collared Finchbill (凤头雀嘴鹎) moving in noisy groups through old camphor and fig trees, White Wagtail (白鹡鸰) walking along stone paths and water edges, and Brown-headed Thrush-like small passerines in shaded gardens. The most important stream specialist here is the Red-tailed Water Redstart (红尾水鸲), often perched on canal rocks flicking its bright tail. In winter, small flocks of Dark-eyed White-eye (暗绿绣眼鸟) actively feed on flowering trees such as cherry and crabapple.

    2. Lion Hill & Wangu Tower (狮子山·万古楼) — 09:30–10:30 | 1 hour | Forest canopy + hillside birding

Walk uphill from the old town to Lion Hill (狮子山), a forested ridge above Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城). Ancient cypress and pine trees create a quiet canopy habitat with strong bird activity.

Key species include Black-headed Laughingthrush (黑头奇鹛) moving in noisy groups, occasional Fire-tailed Sunbird (火尾太阳鸟) visiting flowering shrubs, and Blue-fronted Redstart (蓝额红尾鸲) in mid-canopy branches. Common urban-edge birds such as Eurasian Tree Sparrow (麻雀) and Yellow-billed Grosbeak / Finchbill (凤头雀嘴鹎) are abundant throughout the slope. From viewpoints near Wangu Tower (万古楼), raptors and fast-flying passerines may be seen crossing above the rooftops.

    3. Black Dragon Pool & Elephant Hill (黑龙潭公园 + 象山) — 10:40–12:10 | 1.5 hours | Wetland + forest edge birding

Move by short drive to Black Dragon Pool Park (黑龙潭公园), one of the most important wetland ecosystems near Lijiang (丽江). The park combines clear spring water, reedbeds, and large old trees, forming ideal habitat for waterbirds and forest-edge species.

Common and notable species include Little Egret (白鹭) feeding in shallow water, White-throated Water Redstart (白顶溪鸲) and Red-tailed Water Redstart (红尾水鸲) along rocky streams, and Striated Swamp Warbler-type birds (棕臀凤鹛) moving in dense shrubs. In calmer corners, Common Cormorant (普通鸬鹚) may be seen diving for fish, while forest edges support tits, bulbuls, and flycatchers.

Continue on foot toward Elephant Hill (象山), where dense woodland provides additional canopy birding. This zone is quieter and often produces brief sightings of forest passerines moving between mid-level branches.

    4. Return to Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城) — 12:10 onward | Free exploration + rest

Return to Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城) for rest, photography, and optional light afternoon birding along canals and gardens. This period is flexible and suitable for revisiting stream sections where Red-tailed Water Redstart and wagtails remain active.

    Day

    8

Lijiang (丽江) — Lashihai Wetland Birding + Departure

Early morning 06:30–07:00, depart from Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城) and drive to Lashihai Wetland (拉市海), the most important highland wetland birding site in the Lijiang region. The route passes rural valleys with early views of Yulong Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山) and morning mist rising over reedbeds, creating classic plateau wetland scenery.

    1. Houniao Bay Boardwalk (候鸟湾栈道) — 07:00–08:30 | Waterbirds + open lake birding

Begin birding at Houniao Bay (候鸟湾), a wide lakeshore boardwalk with open water views and dense reedbeds. Early morning is the peak activity period, with calm water and strong feeding behavior.

Key species include Black-headed Gull / Red-billed Gull group (红嘴鸥) in large winter flocks, Eurasian Coot (白骨顶) actively feeding in shallow water, and Little Grebe (小䴙䴘) diving frequently and surfacing close to reeds. In suitable seasons, rare migrants such as Oriental Pratincole-type wetland birds (普通燕鸻类记录种) may appear on nearby grassland edges.

    2. Hainan Patrol Boardwalk (海南巡护栈道) — 08:40–10:10 | Deep wetland + heron habitat

Continue into the interior wetland along Hainan Patrol Boardwalk (海南巡护栈道), one of the best sections for herons, rails, and reed-dependent species. Vegetation becomes denser, and bird activity is concentrated in feeding channels.

Key species include Little Egret (白鹭) standing in shallow water, Purple Swamphen / Purple Waterhen group (紫水鸡) moving through reeds, Black-crowned Moorhen (黑水鸡) darting between aquatic plants, and occasional Falcated Duck / diving ducks such as Tufted Duck-like species (凤头潜鸭类冬候鸟). This is the most ecologically rich section of Lashihai.

    3. Daying Village Lakeshore (打渔村环湖步道) — 10:20–11:30 | Final wetland panorama + raptors + migrants

End birding at Daying Village (打渔村), where open lake views combine with shallow marshes and distant snow mountain scenery. This is the best location for final scanning and rare species detection.

Key species include Grey Heron / crane group in winter (灰鹤偶见), Ruddy Shelduck (赤麻鸭) in large flocks on open water, Mallard (绿头鸭) feeding near shorelines, and White-cheeked Laughingthrush-type wetland-edge birds (白颊噪鹛) calling from nearby shrubs. This final stop provides a complete panorama of wetland ecosystems with Yulong Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山) in the background.

At 11:30, return to Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城) or transfer directly to airport/train station depending on schedule. The tour ends after final departure from Lijiang (丽江).

Unforgettable and Memorable Trip to Fujian

We wanted to do a 7-day trip to Zhangzhou, Yongding, Quanzhou and Xiamen. We enquired with Yaso who assigned a very responsive travel consultant, Emma who helped us craft our itinerary. We visited the Hakka T(ulou Earthen Buildings), and even stayed overnight in one of the hillside villages nearby. It truly helped us immerse in the culture and ambience of the area. We also visited the buzzing fishery ports and live seafood markets of Quanzhou and Xiamen, and tasted the very diversified, freshest and most delicious seafood of the two cities. We also visited unique seaside villages like Xunpu, architecturally and historically unique ancient villages like Wulin and Chongwu, not forgetting the beautiful island escape, Gulangyu. We were assigned a very friendly and knowledgeable guide Adam, who is sensitive to our needs and preferences and often go out of his way to create a truly wonderful experience throughout the trip, one that showed us the culture, history, daily lives and cuisine of the area beyond the surface. We were also given a clean and comfortable car to travel around, and Mr Chen, the driver is safe and reliable. Emma was also always on hand and responsive to address any little hiccups along the way, and make our trip safe comfortable, smooth and very enjoyable. A big thank you to Adam, Emma and Mr Chen. I highly recommend Yaso, and will certainly consider them for future travel in China.

Unforgetable Days With West China Tours

What is gone is gone, what is to come keeps coming. The memories with West China tours, however, has been engraved in my mind and will be lasted as long as my life is there. With its considerate services, cosy accomodation, warmhearted guides and drivers, West China Tours really gave me an experience that different from the ones that all by my self or with other agencies. It was totally beyond my expectation when I saw our destination Shangri-la. It was such a picturesque place where has clean rivers and blue sky. During my stay here, the visits to Pudacuo national park and one local family under the help and introduction of our guide made a deep impression on me and even gave me an imptus to llive here some day in the futture. Thanks to West China tours, I can have such an amazing and unforgetable experience in Shangri-la. May it also benefits you on your way.

    A mazing time in yunnan

Just finished a six-day trip to Kunming, Jianshui and Yuanyang. Here are some things I want to share. The schedule was really well planned. We didn’t feel rushed or tired at all, and we had plenty of time to sightsee and relax every day. All the meals were halal, and we tried Jianshui grilled tofu, which was really unique and tasty. I usually get carsick before, but the vehicle was spacious and the driver’s skill was good, so I felt fine during the whole trip. Our tour guide was a wonderful, friendly and thoughtful guy, communication was not a problem at all. I’m so glad to have made a new friend in China. Haigeng Dam in Kunming has beautiful scenery, and we even got the chance to feed the migrating seagulls. What I recommend most is the Yuanyang Terraced Fields. It was such a huge surprise for me because I had never seen before! Besides the amazing natural scenery, you can also see the wisdom of the local people in how they make use of the land. If I ever get the chance to visit Yunnan again, definitely will choose here again.

    a wonderful trip memory

As the No.1 Best Seller Yunnan itinerary, the trip is truly worthwhile. First of all, the selection of destinations is very valuable, since Kunming, Lijiang, Dali, and Shangri-La could represent the complex natural landscapes and diverse ethnic cultures in Yunnan Province. Secondly, it is rational to choose high-speed rail as the mode of transport, as we can witness China's rapid development and significantly shorten the time we spend on the road, by the way, as a solo traveler, I could choose to stay in the quiet carriage, which provided me a comfortable place to rest. Then, the tour guide services are worthwhile, which could make our trip have more meaningful engagement, especially in Yunnan, not only the wonderful landscapes but also the ethnic and cultural diversity. What was most impressive about the trip was the Dali discovery. The Three Pagodas was marvelous, and walking along the Erhai Lake S bay could be one of the most leisure time in my life. Xizhou ancient town was also a great place, where we experienced a unique culture of the Bai minority. The tour guide recommended that we try the Bai three-course tea experience, which could be an unforgettable memory. I think it was an essential part to deeply understand the Bai minority’s culture. All in all, this trip was so great that I can’t wait to recommend it to my friends and invite them to have a meaningful trip with me in Yunnan.

We are a party of 8 mosque friends who uses Yaso Trip services for our golfing trip in Kunming,Yunnan from 7-11 Sept 2025.We must say that we are pleased of their services from the time of obtaining quotation until the day we were sent to Kunming International Airport.Credit must be given to Justin whom I dealt with.He was professional in his works and during negotiations of the pricing. The quote he gave was very competitive and we are happy with the price Yaso offered us.We opted for a lower star hotel to save cost but we are happy with Kyriad Hotel provided to us.The tour agent Jane was also hardworking and tried her best to fulfill our needs. The Halal restaurants that she recommended us were also good and the food were tasty. The golf arrangements were also very good and we got the play at the top 3 golf courses that we requested to play. The bus driver was also courteous and skillful. Great time in Lijiang

Overall, we had a great time in Lijiang. The experience with our tour guide, Xiao Wu, was amazing. We didn't just enjoy ourselves, we also learned a lot about the history of Lijiang and China. She was very knowledgeable. The driver was punctual and helpful and the van was very comfortable too. All places we were brought to were very delicious. They followed our request to go only the Halal restaurants. We really appreciate that all the food was pre-ordered, so it was ready by the time we reached the restaurant. Highly recommend Yaso Trip for everyone!
