This cross-plateau cycling expedition connects Lhasa (拉萨) in central Tibet with Shangri-La (香格里拉) in northwest Yunnan, following high-altitude routes across the eastern Tibetan Plateau. The journey combines sections of the Sichuan–Tibet Highway (G318) and the Yunnan–Tibet corridor, offering one of the most scenic long-distance cycling routes in China.
Starting from the spiritual capital Lhasa, riders gradually leave the wide river valleys of central Tibet and cross a series of legendary mountain passes such as Mila Pass (米拉山口) and Dongdala Pass (东达山口). The route then descends through deep gorges, alpine forests, and glacier-fed lakes including Basum Lake (巴松措) and Ranwu Lake (然乌湖), before reaching the eastern Tibetan regions near the Yunnan border.
The final stage enters the dramatic landscapes of northwestern Yunnan, passing Meili Snow Mountain (梅里雪山), salt valley towns like Yanjing (盐井), and forested valleys before arriving in the mythical land of Shangri-La.
This route is famous for its diverse terrain transitions—from high-altitude grasslands and snow mountains to river valleys and subtropical forests—making it one of the most visually varied cycling journeys in Asia.
