    This 10-day Tibet motorcycle expedition combines two of the most iconic landscapes on the Tibetan Plateau: the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, and the sacred alpine waters of Lake Namtso. Starting and ending in Lhasa (拉萨), the journey follows the legendary Himalayan route via Gyantse (江孜), Shigatse (日喀则), and Tingri (定日) before reaching Everest Base Camp, then continues north across vast grasslands to the holy lake region of northern Tibet.

    Arrival in Lhasa (Gateway to Tibet Adventure)

    Upon arrival in Lhasa (拉萨) at an altitude of 3,650 meters, you will be warmly welcomed by your Tibetan guide at either the airport or train station, presented with a traditional white Hada (哈达) as a symbol of blessing and good fortune.

    You will then be transferred to your hotel in Lhasa, driving along the scenic valley where the Lhasa River (拉萨河) flows through the plateau city. Along the way, you will catch your first impressions of the “Roof of the World,” with distant mountains and prayer flags fluttering in the wind.

    After check-in, your guide will provide a short briefing about the itinerary, safety guidelines, and essential altitude acclimatization tips. The rest of the day is dedicated to rest, allowing your body to adjust gradually to the high-altitude environment.

    This is an important acclimatization day before beginning your journey into monasteries, mountains, and high plateau landscapes.

    Lhasa Monastery Exploration (Drepung Monastery → Sera Monastery)

    In the morning, begin your cultural journey with a visit to Drepung Monastery (哲蚌寺), once the largest monastery in Tibet and home to over 10,000 monks. Walk through its vast hillside complex and explore the grand Coqen Hall, where your guide will explain the foundations of Tibetan Buddhism, its philosophical worldview, and key historical figures who shaped its development.

    Continue deeper into the monastery to visit Loseling College (洛色林学院) or a similar monastic college. Here, you will gain insight into the daily study life of monks, including philosophy, debate training, and religious discipline. You may also explore residential quarters and understand how monastic life is organized in such a large spiritual institution.

    In the afternoon, ride to Sera Monastery (色拉寺), another of Tibet’s “Great Three” Gelug monasteries. The highlight of the visit is the famous monk debate session, held in the courtyard between 3:00–5:00 PM (Monday to Saturday), where monks engage in energetic philosophical discussions using gestures, clapping, and logic.

    You will also visit the monastery’s scripture printing house, observe traditional Buddhist thangka paintings, and view sacred artworks such as sand mandalas and rock paintings of Buddha.

    Return to Lhasa in the evening for rest and relaxation.

    After breakfast, begin your exploration of Lhasa with a visit to the iconic Potala Palace (布达拉宫), the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and the most famous landmark of Tibet. From its towering structure, enjoy a sweeping panoramic view over Lhasa Old Town, while learning about the historical life stories of successive Dalai Lamas.

    Inside the palace, discover priceless cultural treasures, including the gilded burial stupas of past Dalai Lamas and sacred meditation caves, such as the retreat site of the 33rd great Tibetan king. The visit offers deep insight into Tibet’s spiritual and political history.

    Afterward, walk down to Longwangtan Park (龙王潭公园) at the foot of the Potala Palace. From here, you can capture some of the most classic photographic views of the palace reflected in the lake and also observe local Tibetan daily leisure activities.

    In the afternoon, continue to the sacred heart of Tibetan Buddhism, Jokhang Temple (大昭寺). Inside, you will see the highly revered statue of Buddha Sakyamuni at age twelve, attracting pilgrims from all over Tibet. Outside the temple, experience devout pilgrims performing full-body prostrations in deep devotion.

    Surrounding Jokhang Temple is the vibrant Barkhor Street (八廓街), where you can join pilgrims walking the kora route while exploring traditional markets filled with Tibetan handicrafts, incense, prayer wheels, and local snacks.

    End the day in one of Lhasa’s traditional Tibetan tea houses, where you can enjoy sweet tea while observing local social life and culture in a relaxed atmosphere.

    Lhasa → Ganden Monastery

    After lunch, drive eastward from Lhasa into the mountains to reach Ganden Monastery (甘丹寺), founded by Je Tsongkhapa (宗喀巴大师), the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. As the first and oldest Gelug monastery in Tibet, it sits dramatically on the ridge of Wangbur Mountain, overlooking deep valleys and winding river landscapes.

    Upon arrival, explore the main assembly halls and hillside structures of the monastery complex. You will also take a short hike along the Ganden Kora (甘丹转经道), a pilgrimage circuit that circles the mountain and takes about 40 minutes to complete, offering sweeping views of the Lhasa Valley and surrounding peaks.

    In the evening, settle into a peaceful mountain stay at Ganden, enjoying the quiet atmosphere above the clouds.

    Upon arrival, explore Reting Monastery, founded in 1057 by Dromtönpa (仲敦巴), the chief disciple of Atisha (阿底峡). According to legend, the surrounding ancient cypress forest grew from a sacred relic buried by the master himself, making this site one of the most spiritually significant early Kadampa monasteries in Tibet.

    In the afternoon, enjoy a gentle hike along the Longkhor pilgrimage circuit (approx. 1–2 hours), walking through peaceful forest trails and small Tibetan villages along the Kyichu River Valley. This section offers a rare combination of natural forest ecology and traditional rural Tibetan life.

    Upon arrival in Damxung, you will begin a short acclimatization hike through nearby meadows. Along the way, you may visit a small local monastery and experience the quiet pastoral landscape dotted with yaks and nomadic settlements.

    This easy trekking session helps your body adjust to higher altitude conditions before entering the deeper trekking section of the journey.

    Trek to Herder’s Camp

    Distance: ~12–16 km|Hiking Time: 7–8 hrs|Altitude: ~4,500–4,800m

    After breakfast, you’ll begin a full day of trekking through remote high-altitude terrain. The trail leads you across glaciated valleys, open ridgelines, and wide mountain basins shaped by ancient ice movement.

    As you progress, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with expansive views of surrounding snow-capped peaks and deep-cut valleys. The route offers a true sense of wilderness, with very few signs of human activity along the way.

    You’ll continue hiking through rolling mountain valleys and alpine pastures, where you may encounter yaks grazing freely and occasional Tibetan nomadic settlements scattered across the grasslands.

    By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at a traditional herder’s camp, where nomadic families seasonally live and herd their livestock. This is a great opportunity to observe authentic Tibetan pastoral life in a remote environment.

    Your campsite will be set up near the herder’s area, surrounded by open grassland and mountain scenery.

    Trek to a Broad Basin (Trek 6–7 hrs)

    Start your trekking day with a gradual ascent to Kong La Pass (岗拉垭口), one of the most scenic viewpoints along the route. From the top, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Namtso Lake (纳木措) in the distance, framed by the snow-covered peaks of the Nyenchen Thanglha Mountains (念青唐古拉山).

    After crossing the pass, the trail gently descends into wide open alpine valleys. You’ll continue hiking through high-altitude grasslands where the landscape opens up dramatically, revealing endless horizons, glacial ridges, and rugged mountain scenery.

    Along the way, the route passes through blooming alpine meadows in summer, where wildflowers color the landscape. You may also encounter grazing yaks and Tibetan nomads, offering a rare glimpse into traditional plateau life.

    By late afternoon, you’ll reach a vast high-altitude basin, where your campsite will be prepared. Surrounded by mountains and silence, this is one of the most peaceful camping experiences of the entire trek.

    Trek to Namtso Lake → Tashi Dorje Hermitage → Drive to Damxung

    Begin your final trekking day with a long scenic hike across open alpine meadows heading toward the sacred Namtso Lake (纳木措). The trail gradually opens into vast high-altitude grasslands where you may encounter traditional Tibetan nomadic camps and observe yaks and sheep grazing freely under the vast sky.

    Arriving at the shore of Namtso Lake (纳木措), you will enjoy a simple lakeside lunch surrounded by one of Tibet’s most sacred natural landscapes. Known as the largest saltwater lake in Tibet, it stretches approximately 70 km east–west and 30 km north–south, covering about 1,920 square kilometers. According to local legend, the lake and the nearby Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains (念青唐古拉山) are a divine couple watching over the land and its people.

    After lunch, continue your exploration toward Tashi Dorje Hermitage (扎西多杰修行地) on the Tashi Peninsula. This spiritual site offers panoramic views of the turquoise lake framed by snow-capped peaks and dramatic rock formations. You can explore meditation caves and prayer sites used by Tibetan monks and pilgrims for centuries.

    In the afternoon, descend from the lakeshore and transfer by vehicle back to Damxung (当雄), passing through wide open plateau scenery along the way.

    Damxung → Lhasa via Chimelong Nunnery & Tsurphu Monastery

    After breakfast in Damxung (当雄), begin your journey back to Lhasa (拉萨) with two important spiritual and cultural stops along the way.

    First, visit Chimelong Nunnery (Phyirmil Lung Nunnery / 赤门朗尼姑寺), the largest nunnery near Lhasa. Walk through its quiet hillside surroundings and explore the daily life of Tibetan Buddhist nuns. The peaceful environment offers a different perspective on Tibetan Buddhism compared to larger monasteries. From nearby viewpoints, you may also see a distant sky burial site, reflecting traditional Tibetan beliefs about the cycle of life and death.

    Continue onward to Tsurphu Monastery (楚布寺), one of the most historically significant monasteries in Tibet. Located in a mountain valley, it serves as the traditional seat of the Karmapa lineage (噶玛噶举派) and is closely connected to the development of the reincarnation system of Tibetan living Buddhas. Here, you can learn more about the “Black Hat” Karmapa tradition and the deep spiritual heritage of Tibetan Buddhism.

    Take time to walk around the monastery complex, explore its prayer halls, and enjoy the dramatic mountain scenery that surrounds it.

    After the visit, continue driving back to Lhasa, arriving in the evening.
