This 9 Days Ganden to Samye Trek (古典甘丹–桑耶徒步线路) is one of Tibet’s most important ancient pilgrimage trekking routes, connecting two legendary monasteries: Ganden Monastery (甘丹寺) and Samye Monastery (桑耶寺), the cradle of Tibetan civilization.

Starting from Lhasa (拉萨), the journey includes cultural sightseeing and acclimatization before entering the high-altitude wilderness north of the Lhasa Valley. The trek passes through remote valleys, mountain passes above 5,000m, alpine meadows, rivers, herder camps, and sacred meditation sites such as Yamalung Hermitage (亚玛琼修行地).

Unlike standard trekking routes, this trail follows centuries-old paths used by Tibetan pilgrims, offering a deep combination of spiritual experience, nomadic culture, and alpine wilderness. The journey ends at Samye Monastery (桑耶寺), Tibet’s first Buddhist monastery, symbolizing the foundation of Tibetan Buddhism.

Arrival in Lhasa (拉萨) – Acclimatization Day

    Distance: Airport/Train Station → Lhasa City | Driving Time: ~1 hr | Altitude: 3650m
Route: Lhasa Gonggar Airport (拉萨贡嘎机场) / Lhasa Railway Station (拉萨火车站) → Lhasa City

Arrive in Lhasa (拉萨), the capital of Tibet and one of the highest cities in the world. Your guide will meet you at the airport or train station and transfer you to your hotel along the Lhasa River (拉萨河) valley. The scenery gradually shifts from dry plateau landscapes to a more settled river valley as you approach the city.

After check-in, the entire day is dedicated to altitude acclimatization. Lhasa sits at 3650m, so the first 24 hours are important for adjusting to thinner air. Rest in your hotel, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol or heavy physical activity.

If you feel comfortable in the evening, you may take a gentle walk around nearby streets to experience local life—monks walking, prayer wheels spinning, and the relaxed rhythm of the city. However, no major sightseeing is recommended.

Lhasa Monastery Tour – Drepung & Sera Monasteries

    Distance: ~30–40 km | Driving Time: ~2–3 hrs total | Altitude: 3650m
Route: Lhasa City → Drepung Monastery (哲蚌寺)Sera Monastery (色拉寺) → Lhasa City

After breakfast, begin your cultural exploration of Tibetan Buddhism with a visit to Drepung Monastery (哲蚌寺), located on the slopes of Mount Gephel. Once the largest monastery in Tibet, it housed thousands of monks and served as an important political and religious center. You will explore its vast courtyards, whitewashed buildings, and main assembly hall filled with statues, thangkas, and ancient scriptures. From the upper terraces, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Lhasa city and surrounding mountains.

In the afternoon, continue to Sera Monastery (色拉寺), one of the “Great Three” Gelug monasteries. The highlight here is the famous monk debate (辩经), held in the courtyard, where monks energetically discuss Buddhist philosophy using dramatic gestures and rhythmic clapping. This is one of the most dynamic cultural experiences in Tibet.

You may also visit scripture halls, printing houses, and see traditional Buddhist artwork such as sand mandalas and murals.

Return to Lhasa city in the late afternoon. The evening is free for rest or optional exploration.

Lhasa Cultural Highlights – Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple & Barkhor Street

    Distance: ~15–25 km | Driving Time: ~1–2 hrs | Altitude: 3650m
Route: Lhasa City → Potala Palace (布达拉宫)Jokhang Temple (大昭寺)Barkhor Street (八廓街) → Lhasa City

Start the day with a visit to the iconic Potala Palace (布达拉宫), the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and the most famous landmark in Tibet. Climb through ancient stairways and explore richly decorated halls, golden stupas of past Dalai Lamas, meditation chambers, and centuries-old murals. From the palace terraces, you get one of the best panoramic views over Lhasa City (拉萨市).

Next, head to the spiritual heart of Tibet—Jokhang Temple (大昭寺), the most sacred temple in Tibetan Buddhism. Inside, pilgrims from all over Tibet come to worship the revered Shakyamuni Buddha statue at age 12 (释迦牟尼12岁等身像). Outside, you will see pilgrims performing full-body prostrations, offering a powerful spiritual atmosphere.

Then walk through Barkhor Street (八廓街), a vibrant pilgrimage circuit and old market surrounding Jokhang Temple. Here you can observe traditional Tibetan daily life, spinning prayer wheels, browsing handmade crafts, turquoise jewelry, incense, and religious artifacts.

In the evening, you may optionally visit a traditional Tibetan tea house to experience local social culture and try sweet Tibetan tea.

Lhasa → Ganden Monastery → Start Trek to Yama-do Village

    Distance: ~60–70 km driving + ~7 km trekking | Driving Time: ~2 hrs | Trekking Time: 2–3 hrs | Altitude: 3650m → ~4000–4200m
Route: Lhasa → Ganden Monastery (甘丹寺) → Tsubshi Area → Trek Start → Yama-do Village

After breakfast in Lhasa, drive east into the rugged mountains toward Ganden Monastery (甘丹寺), one of the most important monasteries of the Gelug school and the original seat founded by Tsongkhapa. The road climbs steadily into higher terrain, with wide views of the Lhasa Valley (拉萨河谷) gradually opening behind you.

At Ganden Monastery (甘丹寺), explore the main assembly halls, prayer courtyards, and hillside paths lined with prayer flags. From the viewpoints, you can clearly see the winding trail that you will soon begin trekking—an ancient pilgrimage route connecting Ganden with Samye. The atmosphere here is peaceful but powerful, with monks chanting and pilgrims walking kora (circumambulation).

After the monastery visit, continue by vehicle to the trek starting point near Tsubshi Village (图布寺村). This is the last vehicle-accessible point before entering remote mountain terrain. Here you prepare for the trek: adjust backpacks, meet local porters if needed, and begin walking into the wilderness.

The trek begins with a gradual descent into open alpine valleys. The trail follows small streams, yak pastures, and scattered nomadic settlements. You will pass areas where Tibetan herders live seasonally, with black yak-hair tents and grazing animals spread across the grasslands.

As you continue, the landscape becomes more remote and untouched. Snow-capped ridges appear in the distance, while the air becomes noticeably cooler and fresher. The path is a mix of dirt tracks and natural mountain trails, with prayer flags marking direction points along the way.

By late afternoon, you arrive at Yama-do Village (亚玛多营地), a high-altitude camping area surrounded by hills and open valleys. Tents are set up in advance, and hot meals are prepared by the trekking crew. The night sky here is exceptionally clear, with dense stars visible due to the lack of light pollution.

    5

Trek to Tsotup Chu Valley (珠措普河谷营地)

    Distance: ~10 km trekking | Trekking Time: ~5–6 hrs | Altitude: ~4000m → 5200m (pass) → ~4300m
Route: Yama-do Village → Uphill Alpine Trail → Shug La Pass (舒格拉垭口, 5250m) → Tsotup Chu Valley Camp

After breakfast at camp, begin a steady ascent from Yama-do Village (亚玛多营地) into increasingly high alpine terrain. The trail gradually narrows as you leave grassy meadows behind and enter a more rugged landscape of rocks, scree slopes, and glacial-fed streams.

Midway through the day, you climb toward Shug La Pass (舒格拉垭口, 5250m), the first major high pass of the trek. The ascent is physically demanding due to altitude, but the views become increasingly dramatic—snow-covered peaks, deep valleys, and endless ridgelines stretching across the horizon.

From the top of the pass, you descend carefully through loose rock terrain into the Tsotup Chu Valley (措普楚河谷). The descent is long but scenic, with wide views of yak grazing grounds and seasonal nomad camps along the river.

By late afternoon, you reach the campsite in Tsotup Chu Valley, located near a wide stream and open grassland area. This is a traditional herders’ region in summer, so you may see local nomads setting up black tents and moving livestock.

Dinner is prepared at camp, and the night is spent in tents surrounded by high mountains and flowing water.

    Camping in Tsotup Chu Valley.

    Day

    6

    Trek to Herders’ Camp

    Distance: ~14 km trekking | Trekking Time: ~5–6 hrs | Altitude: ~4300m → 5225m → ~4500m
Route: Tsotup Chu Valley → River Crossing → Chitu La Pass (奇图拉垭口, 5225m) → Alpine Basin → Herders’ Camp

After breakfast beside the river, continue trekking deeper into the mountains. The trail follows the Tsotup Chu River (措普楚河) upstream, crossing small wooden bridges and open meadow sections where yaks often graze.

The ascent toward Chitu La Pass (奇图拉垭口, 5225m) is steady and long. The terrain becomes more barren and rocky as altitude increases. This section offers some of the most dramatic scenery of the entire trek, with sharp ridgelines, glacial valleys, and distant snow peaks visible in all directions.

After reaching the pass, you descend into a wide alpine basin featuring small glacial lakes and scattered snow patches. The landscape here feels remote and untouched, with almost no human presence except occasional nomad camps.

In the afternoon, continue trekking for another section through gentle slopes and open terrain until you reach the Herders’ Camp (牧民营地). This is a seasonal nomadic settlement where Tibetan herders live during summer months, offering a glimpse into traditional high-altitude pastoral life.

Tonight’s campsite is set near the herders’ area, with basic facilities and stunning sunset views over the surrounding mountains.

    7

Trek to Samye via Yamalung Hermitage → Samye Town

    Distance: ~15 km trekking + ~24 km driving | Trekking Time: ~6 hrs | Driving Time: ~1 hr | Altitude: ~4500m → ~3500m
Route: Herders’ Camp → Forest & Valley Descent → Yamalung Hermitage (亚玛隆修行地) → Changtang Village → Samye Town

After breakfast, begin the final trekking section of the route. The trail gradually descends from high alpine terrain into greener valleys, passing through streams, shrublands, and increasingly dense vegetation. Compared to previous days, the air becomes warmer and oxygen levels improve noticeably.

The most scenic part of the day is the long valley descent, where you walk through mixed forest areas, wildflowers, and flowing mountain streams. Along the way, you may pass Tibetan nomadic settlements and small seasonal grazing camps.

Arrive at Yamalung Hermitage (亚玛隆修行地), a sacred meditation site associated with Guru Padmasambhava (莲花生大师). The hermitage is built into cliffs above the valley and is considered a highly spiritual retreat site. If energy allows, a short uphill hike leads to viewpoints overlooking the entire valley system.

Continue trekking through Changtang Village (昌塘村), where the trail becomes easier and gradually transitions into a road-accessible area. From here, vehicle pickup transfers you to Samye Town (桑耶镇).

    Overnight in Samye Town.

    8

Samye Monastery (桑耶寺) → Return to Lhasa

    Distance: ~170 km | Driving Time: ~3–4 hrs | Altitude: ~3500m → 3650m
Route: Samye Town → Brahmaputra Valley → Lhasa

After breakfast, visit the highlight of the region—Samye Monastery (桑耶寺), the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet and a landmark of Tibetan civilization. Built in a mandala-style layout, the monastery represents the Buddhist universe in architectural form.

Explore the main temples, stupas, and surrounding pilgrimage circuit (kora). You’ll see monks chanting and pilgrims performing prostrations around the monastery, maintaining centuries-old traditions.

After the visit, drive back along the Yarlung Tsangpo River Valley (雅鲁藏布江河谷) toward Lhasa. The route offers wide river views, desert-like hills, and scattered villages along the way.

Arrive in Lhasa in the afternoon and check into your hotel. The rest of the day is free for rest, shopping, or light walking in the city.
