Route Type: Lakeside trekking + village visits + island monastery viewpoint + alpine prairie
After breakfast in Gangba Village (岗巴村), begin one of the most scenic sections of the entire Yamdrok Lake (羊卓雍措) trekking route. The trail follows an off-the-beaten-path path that gradually reveals the hidden beauty of the lakeshore.
Along the way, you may take a side route closer to the lake, where the landscape changes with the seasons—migratory birds often gather during winter, while summer brings bright alpine flowers and golden rapeseed fields scattered across the grasslands.
Arrive at Tsayu Village (擦玉村), a small and traditional settlement known for its quiet lifestyle. Here, visit Tsayu Temple (擦玉寺), one of the smallest monasteries in the region with only a few resident monks. Despite its size, the temple offers a deeply authentic cultural atmosphere, where travelers are often welcomed with warm hospitality and traditional Tibetan tea.
Continue trekking toward Zhangda Village (章达村). Along the route, take a short visit to Riduo Monastery (日多寺), located on a small island in the middle of Yamdrok Lake. From this vantage point, enjoy a panoramic view of the lake’s turquoise waters and scattered islands surrounded by snow-capped mountains.
After crossing a gentle mountain pass, the landscape suddenly opens up to reveal Gamalin Prairie (嘎玛林草原). This vast alpine meadow is one of the most breathtaking highlights of the entire trek. Yaks, sheep, and horses graze freely across the open grasslands, while distant mountain winds carry the sound of bells through the valley.
Set up camp in Gamalin Prairie and enjoy an unforgettable evening under the vast Tibetan sky.
