Route Type: Highland road journey + mountain pass viewpoint + lakeshore trekking

After breakfast in Lhasa (拉萨), begin your journey toward the Yamdrok Lake region with a scenic drive of approximately 2.5 hours to Dongla Village (东拉村). Along the way, you will pass sections of the Yarlung Tsangpo River (雅鲁藏布江), one of Tibet’s most important river systems, flowing through deep valleys and wide open landscapes.

The route then ascends toward Jiarela Mountain (加日拉山口), one of the most iconic viewpoints of this journey. From the pass, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Yamdrok Lake (羊卓雍措), where the lake’s turquoise waters stretch across the plateau and merge with distant snow-covered peaks.

Gangba Village → Gamalin Prairie via Zhangda Village (Scenic Lake & Cultural Trek)

    Distance: ~38 km trekking|Trekking Time: ~8–10 hrs|Altitude: ~4,200–4,500m
Route Type: Lakeside trekking + village visits + island monastery viewpoint + alpine prairie

After breakfast in Gangba Village (岗巴村), begin one of the most scenic sections of the entire Yamdrok Lake (羊卓雍措) trekking route. The trail follows an off-the-beaten-path path that gradually reveals the hidden beauty of the lakeshore.

Along the way, you may take a side route closer to the lake, where the landscape changes with the seasons—migratory birds often gather during winter, while summer brings bright alpine flowers and golden rapeseed fields scattered across the grasslands.

Arrive at Tsayu Village (擦玉村), a small and traditional settlement known for its quiet lifestyle. Here, visit Tsayu Temple (擦玉寺), one of the smallest monasteries in the region with only a few resident monks. Despite its size, the temple offers a deeply authentic cultural atmosphere, where travelers are often welcomed with warm hospitality and traditional Tibetan tea.

Continue trekking toward Zhangda Village (章达村). Along the route, take a short visit to Riduo Monastery (日多寺), located on a small island in the middle of Yamdrok Lake. From this vantage point, enjoy a panoramic view of the lake’s turquoise waters and scattered islands surrounded by snow-capped mountains.

After crossing a gentle mountain pass, the landscape suddenly opens up to reveal Gamalin Prairie (嘎玛林草原). This vast alpine meadow is one of the most breathtaking highlights of the entire trek. Yaks, sheep, and horses graze freely across the open grasslands, while distant mountain winds carry the sound of bells through the valley.

Set up camp in Gamalin Prairie and enjoy an unforgettable evening under the vast Tibetan sky.

After breakfast at Gamalin Prairie (嘎玛林草原), begin today’s journey deeper into the most remote and pristine section of the Yamdrok Lake (羊卓雍措) trekking circuit. This stage is considered one of the most untouched parts of the entire route, offering a true wilderness experience on the Tibetan plateau.

The trail passes through vast, uninhabited highland terrain where silence dominates the landscape. Along the way, you will enjoy continuous views of alpine valleys, open grasslands, and distant snow-capped peaks reflecting the changing light of the plateau.

As the trek progresses, multiple small islands scattered across Yamdrok Lake come into view, creating a dramatic contrast between deep blue water and rugged mountain surroundings. This section is especially known for its raw natural beauty and sense of isolation.

By late afternoon, arrive at Nyimalung Village (尼玛隆村), located near the inner lake region. From here, you can view Bajiu Tso (巴久措), one of the three sacred “guardian lakes” of Yamdrok Lake, known for its vivid color and spiritual significance.

From here, enjoy a wide-angle view of Yamdrok Lake (羊卓雍措) stretching into the horizon.
