This 14 Days Northeast China Birding Tour covers three key regions in northern China—Beijing, Huozhou (Shanxi Province), and Northeast China wetlands and forests—offering a complete cross-habitat birding experience during the peak breeding season in June.

The route combines temperate mountain forests, endemic-rich foothills, vast grasslands, and internationally important wetlands, making it one of the most diverse birding circuits in China. The focus is on a mix of endemic species, migratory cranes, steppe specialists, and boreal forest birds, with strong chances for both lifer targets and high-value photographic opportunities.

A highlight of the journey is the dedicated search for the Brown Eared-Pheasant in Huozhou, along with large-scale crane gatherings and rare forest species in remote northeastern regions.

    1

    Beijing Arrival

Arrival in Beijing, China’s capital and main international gateway. Meet your local birding guide and transfer to the western mountainous area (usually Lingshan region or nearby forest accommodation depending on logistics and traffic).

The drive itself already begins the transition from urban landscapes into forest-covered hills and reservoir valleys, where early summer bird activity can often be observed along the roadside.

If time allows, a short introductory birding stop may be arranged around nearby woodland edges or wetlands. This can produce early sightings of common temperate species and helps set up the rhythm for the following intensive birding days. Otherwise, the rest of the day is focused on rest and preparation.

Evening briefing covers route overview, habitat strategy, and key target species for Beijing and beyond.

Overnight at Lingshan area or nearby mountain lodge.

    Day

    2

Beijing Mountain Forest Birding (Core Diversity Day)

Full day exploring the western Beijing mountain forests, one of the richest temperate birding habitats in northern China. The route typically follows forest roads, stream valleys, and mid-elevation slopes, where bird activity is concentrated in breeding season.

Early morning birding focuses on mixed-species feeding flocks, which are the key feature of this habitat. These flocks move through canopy and mid-story layers, often holding multiple target species together.
