Frontier Roads Across Desert and History

This 8-day self-driving journey follows the ancient frontier of Helan Mountain (贺兰山) into the heart of Northwest China’s desert systems, crossing salt lakes, Gobi wilderness, red clay formations, and historic border towns. Inspired by Yue Fei (岳飞)’s “Man Jiang Hong (满江红)”—“drive chariots and break through Helan Mountain”—the route blends cultural memory with extreme landscapes, revealing a raw and powerful side of China’s northwest.

    Tour Highlights

    Extreme Self-Driving Experience

Drive through a combination of highways and real off-road terrain, including Helan Mountain (贺兰山) crossings, Tengger Desert (腾格里沙漠) lake routes, Black Gobi (黑戈壁), and Yinshan Canyon (阴山峡谷). Sections range from smooth highways to full desert navigation with convoy support.

    Desert Lakes & Natural Wonders

Visit surreal landscapes including Wulan Lake (乌兰湖), Camel Lake (骆驼湖), Agate Lake (玛瑙湖), Jilantai Salt Lake (吉兰泰盐湖), and Nalin Lake (纳林湖). Each lake presents a different visual identity—red, pink, blue, or pure salt-white mirror surfaces.

    Frontier History & Ancient Sites

Explore Jilu Fortress (鸡鹿塞) where Wang Zhaojun (王昭君) once lived, Manbala Seng Temple (满巴拉僧庙) on a cliff, Agui Temple (阿贵庙) in Yinshan Canyon, and ancient Helan Mountain ruins tied to frontier defense history.

    Immersive Desert Experiences

Includes desert camping under the Milky Way, off-road driving across dunes and Gobi plains, sunset photography, drone shooting, campfires, and desert night entertainment.

Arrival in China → Yinchuan (银川) Check-in Day

Arrival in Yinchuan (银川) – Gateway to Northwest China

Today is a flexible arrival day. Travelers from different cities across China will independently arrive in Yinchuan (银川), the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (宁夏回族自治区), and check in at a designated 4-star hotel or similar accommodation.

After arrival, guests can rest and adjust to the local environment at their own pace. There is no fixed group schedule, making this a relaxed introduction to the journey through Northwest China.

Optional Cultural Exploration in Yinchuan (银川)

For travelers who wish to explore the city, several highlights are recommended within easy reach of the city center.

Ningxia Museum (宁夏博物馆) – Western Xia Civilization Journey

This is one of the best places to understand the historical foundation of the region before entering the desert landscapes ahead.

Lanshan Park (览山公园) – Sunset Over the Ancient-style City

Lanshan Park (览山公园) is one of Yinchuan’s most iconic photography spots. Built in a Roman-style architectural layout, it has become famous for its “foreign-style ruins in China” aesthetic.

At sunset, the golden light falls over the amphitheater-style structures, creating a dramatic scene often compared to a cinematic landscape. Nearby, the Yuehai Wetland (阅海湿地) offers calm natural scenery with birdlife and reflective water surfaces.

Huaiyuan Xingguang Night Market (怀远星光夜市) – Local Food Paradise

In the evening, head to Huaiyuan Xingguang Night Market (怀远星光夜市), one of the most lively food streets in Yinchuan. This is the best place to experience authentic Northwest China street food culture.

    Recommended local specialties include:

    Understanding the Gobi Landscape

The Gobi Desert covers a massive portion of northern China and Central Asia. Locally, it is described as:

“No birds in the sky, no grass on the ground, thousands of miles without people, where wind moves the stones.”

This region is not a sand desert, but a land of:

    • Gravel plains
    • Rocky plateaus
    • Dry riverbeds
    • Endless horizon lines

The sense of isolation becomes increasingly strong as the convoy moves deeper into the border zone.

Jilantai Salt Lake (吉兰泰盐湖) → Yinchuan (银川)

Self-Driving Overview: Returning Through Desert and Farmland Corridors

Today covers approximately 260 km of self-driving, marking the final return leg of the journey from the desert frontier back to the capital of Ningxia.

    Road Conditions Summary

The entire route runs on well-maintained paved highways, mainly National Highway G110 (G110国道) and Provincial Road S218 (S218省道). Road conditions are stable and comfortable for long-distance driving.

    • Road Type: Fully paved asphalt highway
    • Speed Limit: 60–80 km/h
    • Terrain: Gobi desert transitions into farmland and suburban landscapes
    • Driving Conditions: Straight roads with minimal curves, good visibility, light traffic near urban areas

As the route approaches Yinchuan (银川), drivers should be mindful of increased vehicles and pedestrian activity.

Jilantai Salt Lake (吉兰泰盐湖) – The Mirror of the Sky

A Historic Industrial Salt Lake in Northwest China

After breakfast, the journey begins with a drive along the ancient Camel Salt Road (驼盐古道) toward Jilantai Salt Lake (吉兰泰盐湖), one of China’s earliest large-scale mechanized salt production areas.

    Natural Landscape Features

    • Vast white salt crust stretching across the horizon
    • Crystal-clear reflections blending sky and lake
    • Seasonal “mirror effect” under calm weather conditions
    • Endless contrast between salt plains and blue sky

This creates the famous “Sky Mirror” effect, where the boundary between heaven and earth disappears completely.

    Historical Background

Jilantai Salt Lake (吉兰泰盐湖) began large-scale extraction during the Qing Dynasty in the reign of Emperor Qianlong (乾隆元年). With more than 270 years of history, it has played an important role in the region’s salt industry development.

    • Total lake area: approx. 120 km²
    • Salt crust coverage: approx. 60 km²
    • Average salt layer thickness: 3–5 meters

The lake stands as a witness to the economic and environmental transformation of Northwest China.

Return to Yinchuan (银川) – Back to the Capital of Ningxia

Afternoon Arrival and City Leisure Time

By midday, the journey returns to Yinchuan (银川), where travelers can relax after days of desert exploration.

    Free Exploration in the City

The afternoon is reserved for light leisure activities in Yinchuan’s urban center:

    • Walking through local commercial districts
    • Exploring traditional Muslim food streets
    • Visiting lively night markets in the city center
    • Experiencing the daily life rhythm of Ningxia’s capital

    Recommended Food Experience

Yinchuan is known for its rich Hui Muslim cuisine culture, offering a variety of local flavors such as lamb dishes, handmade noodles, and grilled specialties.

    Farewell Dinner in Yinchuan

The journey concludes with a farewell dinner in Yinchuan (银川), celebrating the completion of the desert expedition. It is a moment to reflect on the vast landscapes traveled—from salt lakes and Gobi deserts to borderlands and ancient frontier routes.

Unforgettable and Memorable Trip to Fujian

We wanted to do a 7-day trip to Zhangzhou, Yongding, Quanzhou and Xiamen. We enquired with Yaso who assigned a very responsive travel consultant, Emma who helped us craft our itinerary. We visited the Hakka T(ulou Earthen Buildings), and even stayed overnight in one of the hillside villages nearby. It truly helped us immerse in the culture and ambience of the area. We also visited the buzzing fishery ports and live seafood markets of Quanzhou and Xiamen, and tasted the very diversified, freshest and most delicious seafood of the two cities. We also visited unique seaside villages like Xunpu, architecturally and historically unique ancient villages like Wulin and Chongwu, not forgetting the beautiful island escape, Gulangyu. We were assigned a very friendly and knowledgeable guide Adam, who is sensitive to our needs and preferences and often go out of his way to create a truly wonderful experience throughout the trip, one that showed us the culture, history, daily lives and cuisine of the area beyond the surface. We were also given a clean and comfortable car to travel around, and Mr Chen, the driver is safe and reliable. Emma was also always on hand and responsive to address any little hiccups along the way, and make our trip safe comfortable, smooth and very enjoyable. A big thank you to Adam, Emma and Mr Chen. I highly recommend Yaso, and will certainly consider them for future travel in China.

Thanks to West China tours, I can have such an amazing and unforgetable experience in Shangri-la. May it also benefits you on your way.

    A mazing time in yunnan

Just finished a six-day trip to Kunming, Jianshui and Yuanyang. Here are some things I want to share. The schedule was really well planned. We didn’t feel rushed or tired at all, and we had plenty of time to sightsee and relax every day. All the meals were halal, and we tried Jianshui grilled tofu, which was really unique and tasty. I usually get carsick before, but the vehicle was spacious and the driver’s skill was good, so I felt fine during the whole trip. Our tour guide was a wonderful, friendly and thoughtful guy, communication was not a problem at all. I’m so glad to have made a new friend in China. Haigeng Dam in Kunming has beautiful scenery, and we even got the chance to feed the migrating seagulls. What I recommend most is the Yuanyang Terraced Fields. It was such a huge surprise for me because I had never seen before! Besides the amazing natural scenery, you can also see the wisdom of the local people in how they make use of the land. If I ever get the chance to visit Yunnan again, definitely will choose here again.

    a wonderful trip memory

As the No.1 Best Seller Yunnan itinerary, the trip is truly worthwhile. First of all, the selection of destinations is very valuable, since Kunming, Lijiang, Dali, and Shangri-La could represent the complex natural landscapes and diverse ethnic cultures in Yunnan Province. Secondly, it is rational to choose high-speed rail as the mode of transport, as we can witness China's rapid development and significantly shorten the time we spend on the road, by the way, as a solo traveler, I could choose to stay in the quiet carriage, which provided me a comfortable place to rest. Then, the tour guide services are worthwhile, which could make our trip have more meaningful engagement, especially in Yunnan, not only the wonderful landscapes but also the ethnic and cultural diversity. What was most impressive about the trip was the Dali discovery. The Three Pagodas was marvelous, and walking along the Erhai Lake S bay could be one of the most leisure time in my life. Xizhou ancient town was also a great place, where we experienced a unique culture of the Bai minority. The tour guide recommended that we try the Bai three-course tea experience, which could be an unforgettable memory. I think it was an essential part to deeply understand the Bai minority’s culture. All in all, this trip was so great that I can’t wait to recommend it to my friends and invite them to have a meaningful trip with me in Yunnan.
