Self-Driving Route Overview: From City Roads to Desert Tracks
Today’s journey covers approximately 180 km of self-driving, gradually transitioning from urban highways to mountain off-road trails and finally into the vast Tengger Desert (腾格里沙漠).
Road Conditions Breakdown
- Yinchuan (银川) → Helan Mountain (贺兰山):
Smooth paved roads including national highways and scenic access roads. The route is well-marked, with speed limits between 60–80 km/h. Driving conditions are stable and suitable for all vehicles.
- Helan Mountain (贺兰山) → Desert Camp Section:
Includes two contrasting driving experiences:
- Huke Off-Road Trail (虎克之路): A rugged non-paved mountain route with gravel surfaces, steep inclines, and sharp bends. Recommended speed is 30–40 km/h, suitable only for off-road vehicles.
- Desert Dream Highway (沙漠梦想公路): A semi-paved desert road with mild undulations and occasional loose gravel. Careful driving is required.
This section is the highlight of the day, where travelers experience a full transition from mountain wilderness to desert landscapes.
Helan Mountain Adventure: Ancient Wall Meets Off-Road Spirit
After breakfast, the journey begins with a drive toward Helan Mountain (贺兰山), following the ancient route near the Great Wall Ruins (明长城).
Huke Off-Road Park (虎克户外运动越野公园)
One of China’s most famous off-road destinations, the Huke Off-Road Park (虎克户外运动越野公园) offers a challenging and thrilling driving experience.
The rugged trails cut through remote valleys of Helan Mountain, allowing travelers to experience dramatic landscapes shaped by time and nature. This is one of the most iconic places for off-road driving in Northwest China, known for its raw terrain and dramatic elevation changes.
Tengger Desert Drive: Entering the Sand Sea
Leaving Helan Mountain behind, the route continues into the Tengger Desert (腾格里沙漠) via the scenic Desert Dream Highway (沙漠梦想公路).
Hero Memorial Square (英雄会雕塑广场)
A stop is made at the symbolic Hero Memorial Square (英雄会雕塑广场), a landmark associated with the famous Alxa Heroes’ Assembly (阿拉善英雄会). This is a popular photo stop for travelers and off-road enthusiasts.
The site is also connected to film culture, as parts of the movie “Skyfire” (狂怒沙暴) were filmed in the surrounding desert areas.
Desert Exploration: Five Lakes of Tengger
After entering deeper into the desert, travelers switch to professional 4WD desert vehicles to explore the famous Five Desert Lakes (腾格里五湖):
Ulan Lake (乌兰湖) – “Heart of the Earth”
A striking red lake resembling a human heart when viewed from above. Its deep crimson color creates a surreal contrast with surrounding golden dunes.
Camel Lake (骆驼湖) – Pink Mirror Lake
Known for its soft pink and blue tones, this lake reflects the sky like a natural mirror, creating a calming and dreamlike atmosphere.
Guitar Lake (吉他湖)

Evening Experience: Damo Biaojv Desert Camp (大漠镖局沙漠营地)
At sunset, the journey arrives at the Damo Biaojv Desert Camp (大漠镖局沙漠营地), located beside the famous Pink Camel Lake (骆驼湖).
Sunset Desert Atmosphere
Guests can relax on desert swings while watching the lake transform into a glowing mirror under the setting sun. The shifting colors of the sky create one of the most beautiful sunset scenes in the Tengger Desert.
