Early Departure from Dunhuang
Begin the day with a simple early breakfast at approximately 06:30. Depart from Dunhuang at around 07:10 and drive directly toward Hami (哈密).
This is one of the most demanding driving days of the itinerary, combining a long Gobi expressway section with slower off-road driving inside the Dahaidao Scenic Area (大海道景区).
The convoy should leave Dunhuang with full fuel tanks, sufficient bottled water and all emergency equipment ready for immediate use.
The morning drive follows the main expressway across the desert toward Xingxingxia (星星峡). Stops should be limited to essential fuel, restroom and vehicle-check breaks so that the group can reach Hami before midday.
Entering Xinjiang at Xingxingxia
Xingxingxia lies near the boundary between Gansu (甘肃) and Xinjiang (新疆) and has historically been an important eastern gateway into the region.
A security and document checkpoint may operate along this section. All travelers must keep their passports or identification documents accessible, while drivers must also carry their temporary Chinese driving permits and vehicle papers.
Passengers may be asked to leave the vehicle for individual verification. Vehicle interiors, luggage compartments and cargo areas may also be inspected.
The group should remain patient, follow instructions and avoid photographing checkpoint facilities.
Lunch near Wubao Town
Arrive near Wubao Town (五堡镇) on the outskirts of Hami at approximately 12:00 and stop at a local Xinjiang restaurant for lunch.
Wubao lies near the desert routes leading toward Dahaidao and provides a suitable location for the final meal, fuel stop and supply check before entering the remote scenic area.
After lunch, inspect every vehicle again. Check fuel level, tire pressure, spare tire, air compressor, tow rope and two-way radio batteries.
Each vehicle should carry drinking water, snacks and basic emergency supplies independently rather than relying entirely on the lead vehicle.
Drive to the Dahaidao Entrance
Depart from Wubao at approximately 13:30 and drive toward the eastern entrance of Dahaidao (大海道).
The road from Hami toward the scenic area is mainly paved and crosses open desert terrain. Wind, dust and intense sunlight may reduce visibility at times.
Arrive at the scenic entrance at approximately 14:30. Complete any required registration, vehicle checks and route briefing before entering the desert area.
The scenic-area staff may confirm whether the vehicles are suitable for the planned route. Ordinary low-clearance cars should not attempt unpaved sections where washboard surfaces and sharp stones can cause underbody or tire damage.
Dahaidao Desert Exploration
Dahaidao was once part of an ancient route connecting Dunhuang, Hami and Turpan. Today, it is known for its enormous yardang formations, dry valleys, stone plains and remote Gobi landscapes.
The initial scenic route may include paved or hardened sections suitable for most SUVs. More remote areas contain gravel, loose stones and uneven washboard surfaces.
Travelers will explore the Dahaidao Devil City Yardang Group (大海道魔鬼城雅丹群), where wind erosion has created formations resembling castles, towers, animals and ruined cities.
Notable formations may include the Hanhai Turtle (瀚海神龟) and Double-Headed Horse Yardang (双头马雅丹). Stop only at designated or safe viewing areas and keep all vehicles within visual or radio contact.
The afternoon provides time for landscape photography, short walks and controlled off-road driving. Approximately four hours should be reserved for the main desert experience.
Off-Road Driving Experience
The off-road section is suitable only for experienced drivers using appropriate SUVs or four-wheel-drive vehicles.
Speeds should remain low on gravel and washboard surfaces. A recommended range of approximately 20 to 30 kilometers per hour helps reduce the risk of tire punctures and suspension damage.
Drivers should follow the lead vehicle’s track rather than choosing independent routes. The desert surface can appear firm but may hide loose sand, deep ruts or sharp rocks.
Vehicles should avoid sudden braking, rapid steering changes and close following distances. Dust from the vehicle ahead can temporarily reduce visibility, so spacing should be increased.
No vehicle should leave the convoy to search for an alternative viewpoint or shortcut.
Gobi Sunset
At approximately 18:40, stop at a safe open location to watch the sunset over the Gobi plain.
The low evening light emphasizes the textures of the yardang formations and creates long shadows across the desert. This is one of the best photography periods of the Dahaidao journey.
Travelers should remain close to the parked vehicles, as landmarks become difficult to distinguish after sunset. Headlights and communication equipment should be checked before continuing to the accommodation.
Arrival at Hongliutan
Continue toward Hongliutan (红柳滩) and arrive at the visitor service area at approximately 19:30.
Check in at the desert hotel and park all vehicles in the designated outdoor area. Before leaving the vehicles, inspect the tires and underbody for visible damage caused by sharp stones or gravel.
Dinner is served at the visitor center restaurant. The evening should remain relaxed because the following morning includes further exploration of Dahaidao before the drive toward Shanshan.
Driving Distance and Road Conditions
The total distance is approximately 420 kilometers, including the journey from Dunhuang to Hami and the internal Dahaidao driving route.
Pure driving time is approximately six hours and 30 minutes, although the total travel day is longer because of checkpoint procedures, lunch, scenic stops and off-road photography.
The route from Dunhuang to Xingxingxia follows the G30 Expressway across open Gobi terrain. It is fully paved but affected by strong crosswinds and long distances between facilities.
The road from Hami to the eastern entrance of Dahaidao is mainly paved. Inside the scenic area, the first section may use a hardened tourism road, while deeper areas contain gravel and washboard surfaces.
Mobile telephone coverage is limited or unavailable in much of the desert interior.
Main Attractions and Suggested Visiting Time
Dahaidao Devil City Yardang Group (大海道魔鬼城雅丹群): Wind-eroded formations resembling castles and ruined cities.
Hanhai Turtle (瀚海神龟): A distinctive yardang formation named for its animal-like shape.
Double-Headed Horse Yardang (双头马雅丹): Another recognizable natural formation along the desert route.
Dahaidao Off-Road Route (大海道越野路线): Controlled SUV and four-wheel-drive exploration across gravel and Gobi surfaces.
Gobi Sunset: Evening photography among open plains and yardang silhouettes.
Allow approximately 240 minutes for the main Dahaidao exploration.
Scenery Along the Route
The morning drive crosses the enormous yellow-brown Gobi plains of eastern Xinjiang. Sparse camel-thorn vegetation appears beside the highway, while grey mountain ridges can be seen on the horizon.
The heat may create mirage-like reflections over the road surface.
Inside Dahaidao, the scenery becomes more dramatic, with giant yardang formations, dry river channels, gravel plains and isolated sandstone structures shaped by wind erosion.
Recommended Meals
Lunch may be arranged at a local Xinjiang restaurant near Wubao Town.
Recommended dishes include Xinjiang fried-meat noodles (新疆过油肉拌面), freshly baked onion samsa (皮芽子烤包子), pilaf (手抓饭), Hami melon (哈密瓜) and homemade yogurt (自制酸奶).
Dinner is served at the Dahaidao Hongliutan Visitor Center Restaurant (大海道红柳滩游客中心简餐餐厅).
Recommended dishes include clear lamb soup (清炖羊肉鲜汤), handmade dough-piece noodles (手工揪面片), chilled Gobi sand onion (凉拌戈壁沙葱) and multigrain naan (杂粮馕饼).
Food choices inside the scenic area are limited, so travelers with special dietary requirements should prepare suitable backup food before leaving Hami.
Accommodation
Stay at the Dahaidao Hongliutan Visitor Service Center Hotel (大海道红柳滩游客服务中心配套酒店).
The accommodation provides simple desert-style rooms with private bathrooms, hot water and basic soundproofing against wind.
Wi-Fi and mobile reception may be available only in the lobby or selected public areas. Guest rooms deeper inside the scenic area may have no reliable signal.
The hotel has a large open-air parking area suitable for SUVs and four-wheel-drive convoy vehicles. Its location close to the yardang formations allows the group to remain inside the desert rather than returning to Hami.
Self-Drive Safety Notes
All travelers must carry identification and driving documents when passing the Xingxingxia checkpoint. Cooperate with inspections and avoid photographing security facilities.
There are no ordinary fuel stations, convenience stores or complete vehicle-repair services inside Dahaidao. Refuel fully before entering.
Every vehicle must carry drinking water, emergency food, a spare tire, tire-repair tools, an air compressor, tow rope and flashlight.
Drive slowly on gravel and washboard roads. Sharp stones can cut tire sidewalls, while excessive speed can damage suspension systems.
Two-way radios are essential because mobile coverage is unreliable. Confirm the convoy communication channel before entering the scenic area.
No vehicle may leave the marked road or separate from the convoy. The open desert contains few recognizable landmarks, and navigation errors can quickly lead vehicles into areas without rescue access.
Avoid walking far from vehicles after sunset. Temperatures may fall rapidly, and wind conditions can change without warning.
