Xi’an Driving Permit Arrangement – Baoji

After breakfast in Xi’an, head to the local vehicle administration office to complete driving license or temporary driving permit procedures before officially starting the Silk Road self-driving journey. The recommended location is the main Xi’an Vehicle Administration Office in the Chang’an District, around 20 km from the city center. The urban roads are fully paved and generally in good condition, although morning traffic can be heavy within the downtown area, especially during rush hour. Travelers are advised to prepare all required documents in advance, including passport, identification materials, medical examination certificate, international driving permit, and related vehicle rental paperwork. Completing the formalities early in the morning helps avoid delays and provides enough time for the afternoon drive toward western China.

Around midday, depart from Xi’an and begin driving westward along the well-maintained G30 Lianyungang–Khorgas Expressway, one of China’s most important Silk Road transportation corridors. The highway section between Xi’an and Baoji offers smooth asphalt pavement, wide lanes, clear road signage, and frequent service areas equipped with fuel stations, convenience stores, and restaurants. Stop at the Wugong Service Area for a simple Shaanxi-style lunch, where local specialties such as hand-pulled noodles and Roujiamo are popular among long-distance drivers. Along the route, the scenery gradually shifts from the Guanzhong Plain toward the foothills of western Shaanxi, giving travelers their first real taste of the overland Silk Road landscape.

Arrive in Baoji during the afternoon and check into a hotel near the Weihe River or central urban district for convenient transportation and dining access. After a short rest, visit the renowned Baoji Bronze Ware Museum, one of China’s most important museums dedicated to ancient bronze civilization. The museum houses an impressive collection of excavated bronzes from the Zhou Dynasty and provides deep insight into the early history and culture of the Central Plains. In the late afternoon, take a relaxing walk through Weihe River Park, where riverside scenery, local leisure life, and sunset views create a peaceful atmosphere after the first driving day.

In the evening, explore Baoji’s local food culture around the university district and downtown food streets. Signature dishes include rolled cold noodles, Saozi noodles, Douhua Paomo, and traditional vinegar jelly snacks, all representing the strong flavors of western Shaanxi cuisine. After dinner, return to the hotel for rest and prepare for the longer Silk Road drive ahead.

    Driving Distance: About 180 km
    Driving Time: About 2.5 hours
Road Conditions: Entire route follows the G30 Expressway with smooth pavement, wide lanes, and stable driving conditions; urban sections in Xi’an and Baoji may have heavier traffic and pedestrian activity
    Passing Areas: Xi’an, Wugong, Baoji
Core Attractions: Baoji Bronze Ware Museum, Weihe River Park

    Self-Driving Travel Tips:

    1. Complete all driving permit procedures as early as possible to avoid delays caused by long waiting times at the vehicle administration office.
    2. Keep passports, driving permits, vehicle insurance documents, and rental contracts together for convenient access during the entire journey.
    3. The G30 Expressway has frequent service areas every 30–50 km, making refueling and rest stops convenient for self-driving travelers.
    4. Urban traffic in Xi’an can be crowded, especially near administrative offices and downtown intersections, so allow extra driving time in the morning.

    3

    Baoji – Tianshui – Lanzhou

After breakfast in Baoji, continue the westbound Silk Road journey along the G30 Lianyungang–Khorgas Expressway toward Lanzhou, the historic gateway city of northwestern China. The entire route follows high-standard expressways with smooth asphalt pavement and stable driving conditions. Some sections pass through the foothills and valleys connected to the eastern extensions of the Qinling Mountains, where the highway includes multiple curves and gradual elevation changes. Drivers should maintain moderate speed and keep safe distance from heavy trucks commonly seen on long-distance freight routes. Along the way, rolling green mountains, tunnels, river valleys, and rural settlements create a scenic transition from central China toward the landscapes of the Hexi Corridor.

Around midday, stop at the Tianshui Service Area for lunch and a short rest. This is one of the major highway rest points in southeastern Gansu, equipped with fuel stations, restaurants, convenience stores, and vehicle service facilities. Travelers can taste local-style Gansu beef noodles or traditional braised noodles while taking a break from driving. Before continuing the journey, it is recommended to check tire pressure, fuel levels, and overall vehicle condition for the longer western sections ahead.

In the afternoon, continue driving past Dingxi, gradually entering the characteristic landscapes of the Loess Plateau. The mountains slowly open into broad valleys, terraced farmland, and scattered rural villages, offering classic northwestern China scenery rarely seen in the eastern regions of the country. By late afternoon, arrive in Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province and one of the most important historical cities along the ancient Silk Road. Check into a hotel near the Yellow River or around the Zhongshan Bridge area, which provides convenient access to major attractions and local restaurants.

In the evening, visit the iconic Zhongshan Bridge, often called the “First Bridge Across the Yellow River,” and enjoy panoramic views of the illuminated riverfront. Nearby, the famous Yellow River Mother Sculpture reflects Lanzhou’s unique river culture and historical importance as a transportation hub connecting Central China and the western frontier. Later, explore Zhengning Road Night Market, one of Lanzhou’s most popular food streets, where travelers can sample authentic local specialties including Lanzhou hand-pulled beef noodles, Niangpi cold noodles, Sweet Fermented Barley, and Gray Bean dessert soup. After dinner, return to the hotel for rest before continuing deeper into the Silk Road region.

    Driving Distance: About 380 km
    Driving Time: About 4.5 hours
Road Conditions: Entire route follows the G30 Expressway with smooth pavement and moderate traffic; mountainous sections near Baoji and Tianshui include multiple curves and gradual slopes requiring cautious driving
Passing Areas: Baoji, Tianshui, Dingxi, Lanzhou
Core Attractions: Zhongshan Bridge, Yellow River Mother Sculpture, Yellow River Riverside Area

    1. Mountain highway sections between Baoji and Tianshui contain numerous bends and freight traffic, so maintain safe following distance and avoid sudden lane changes.
    2. Highway service areas are well equipped for refueling, dining, and vehicle inspection, making them ideal rest stops during long-distance driving.
    3. Weather in Gansu can change quickly between mountain and plateau areas, so carry a light jacket even during warmer seasons.
    4. Parking near the Yellow River waterfront and Zhongshan Bridge area can be crowded in the evening, so arriving earlier is recommended.
    Day

    4

    Lanzhou – Wuwei – Zhangye

After breakfast in Lanzhou, continue westward along the legendary Hexi Corridor via the G30 Lianyungang–Khorgas Expressway, one of the most important overland trade routes in Chinese history. The highway conditions today are excellent, featuring wide asphalt lanes, light traffic, and long straight desert sections ideal for self-driving. Leaving the Yellow River valley behind, the scenery gradually transforms from the fertile landscapes of the Loess Plateau into the vast open terrain of northwestern China. Along the route, travelers will witness dramatic transitions between farmland, desert plains, isolated mountains, and expansive Gobi scenery, offering one of the most iconic driving experiences of the Silk Road.

Around midday, stop at the Wuwei Service Area for lunch and a short rest. Historically known as one of the major strategic cities along the ancient Silk Road, Wuwei remains an important transportation hub in Gansu Province today. The service area provides convenient facilities for refueling, vehicle checks, and dining. Local snacks such as cold wheat noodles and northwestern-style flatbread make a quick and satisfying lunch before continuing deeper into the Hexi Corridor.

In the afternoon, continue driving past Jinchang, where the landscape becomes increasingly open and dramatic. Vast Gobi plains stretch toward the horizon, while wind farms and desert mountains create a distinctly Central Asian atmosphere. By mid-afternoon, arrive at the world-famous Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, one of China’s most spectacular natural landscapes. The colorful Danxia formations display extraordinary layers of red, orange, yellow, and purple sandstone shaped by millions of years of geological movement and erosion. Visitors can explore multiple viewing platforms by shuttle bus, enjoying panoramic views of the surreal rainbow-colored mountains that have become one of the most photographed natural wonders in China.

After sightseeing, drive into downtown Zhangye and check into a hotel in the city center for convenient dining and transportation. In the evening, explore the traditional streets and local night markets around the old town area. Recommended specialties include Zhangye-style mixed rice dishes, stir-fried noodles, rolled chicken dishes, and apricot peel juice, all reflecting the rich culinary traditions of the Hexi Corridor. The relaxed atmosphere of Zhangye provides a comfortable overnight stop before entering the deeper desert regions farther west.

    Driving Distance: About 540 km
    Driving Time: About 6 hours
Road Conditions: Entire route follows the G30 Expressway with smooth pavement, wide lanes, and relatively light traffic; some Gobi sections may experience strong crosswinds affecting vehicle stability
Passing Areas: Lanzhou, Wuwei, Jinchang, Zhangye
Core Attractions: Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, Rainbow Danxia Scenic Area

    Self-Driving Travel Tips:

    1. Strong crosswinds are common on Gobi sections west of Wuwei, especially in spring and autumn, so keep both hands firmly on the steering wheel.
    2. Fuel stations and service areas are well distributed along the G30 Expressway, but refueling early is still recommended before entering remote western regions.
    3. The Danxia Scenic Area is large, and shuttle buses are required between viewing platforms, so comfortable walking shoes and sun protection are highly recommended.
    4. Desert climate conditions create strong ultraviolet exposure and large day-night temperature differences, so carry sunscreen, sunglasses, and an extra jacket.
    Day

    5

    Zhangye – Jiayuguan

After breakfast in Zhangye, continue westward along the historic Hexi Corridor toward Jiayuguan, the legendary western gateway of the Great Wall and one of the most symbolic cities on the ancient Silk Road. Today’s drive follows the G30 Expressway, featuring smooth pavement, wide lanes, light traffic, and long straight desert sections ideal for relaxed self-driving. The landscapes become increasingly dramatic as the route crosses endless Gobi plains framed by distant mountain ranges. Along certain sections, travelers may even spot camel caravans and isolated desert settlements, adding to the authentic Silk Road atmosphere. A short stop at the Linze Service Area provides time for refreshments and a quick vehicle check before continuing west.

Arrive in Jiayuguan around midday and check into a hotel near the historic fortress area for convenient sightseeing access. After a short rest, visit the magnificent Jiayuguan Fortress, often regarded as the westernmost strategic pass of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall and historically known as the “First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven.” The fortress complex includes ancient city walls, watchtowers, gates, military structures, and defensive courtyards that vividly showcase the military importance of the Silk Road frontier. Walking along the fortress walls offers panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscapes and distant mountains.

Continue to the nearby Overhanging Great Wall, dramatically built along steep mountain ridges overlooking the Gobi Desert. Climbing the stone stairways provides spectacular views of the barren northwestern landscape and creates one of the most memorable Great Wall experiences in western China. Later, head to the famous First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall, located beside the rugged Taolai River Canyon. This isolated frontier structure symbolizes the western starting point of the ancient defensive system and offers striking scenery where canyon cliffs, desert winds, and Silk Road history merge together.

In the evening, relax at the scenic Donghu Ecological Tourism Area, a peaceful lakeside park contrasting sharply with the surrounding desert terrain. Sunset reflections across the lake create a surprisingly tranquil atmosphere in the heart of the Gobi region. Afterward, return to downtown Jiayuguan and explore the local food streets, where specialties such as grilled lamb skewers, fried pastries, and apricot peel juice represent the strong flavors of northwestern frontier cuisine.

    Driving Distance: About 220 km
    Driving Time: About 2.5 hours
Road Conditions: Entire route follows the G30 Expressway with smooth pavement, wide lanes, and light traffic; city roads and scenic area access roads are well maintained and easy to navigate
    Passing Areas: Zhangye, Linze, Jiayuguan
Core Attractions: Jiayuguan Fortress, Overhanging Great Wall, First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall, Donghu Ecological Tourism Area

    Self-Driving Travel Tips:

    1. Desert highways around Jiayuguan are generally smooth and open, but strong sunlight and dry conditions can cause driver fatigue, so regular breaks are recommended.
    2. Scenic areas around Jiayuguan can become crowded during peak tourism seasons, so arriving earlier helps secure convenient parking.
    3. The steps at the Overhanging Great Wall are steep and uneven in some sections, so comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
    4. Daytime temperatures in the Gobi Desert can be high while evenings cool rapidly, so carry both sun protection and an extra layer for the evening activities.
    Day

    6

    Jiayuguan – Guazhou – Dunhuang

After breakfast in Jiayuguan, continue westward along the legendary G30 Expressway toward Dunhuang, one of the most famous oasis cities on the ancient Silk Road. Today’s drive crosses the western section of the Hexi Corridor, where the scenery becomes increasingly vast, remote, and dramatic. The highway conditions remain excellent, with smooth pavement, wide lanes, and relatively light traffic, making this one of the most comfortable long-distance driving days of the journey. Endless Gobi landscapes stretch across the horizon, while isolated oases, desert villages, and distant mountain ranges create the classic scenery associated with the ancient Silk Road caravans.

Around midday, stop at the Guazhou Service Area for lunch and a short break. Guazhou is famous throughout China for its sweet melons and desert agriculture supported by oasis irrigation systems. Travelers can enjoy local-style noodles, rice dishes, and seasonal fruits while resting from the drive. Continuing westward, the route passes through Yumen, historically connected to the ancient “Jade Gate Pass” that once marked the entrance to the Western Regions. Along the way, enormous wind farms dominate the desert landscape, reflecting the importance of renewable energy development across northwestern China.

Arrive in Dunhuang during the late afternoon and check into a hotel near the lively Shazhou Night Market area, one of the most convenient locations for dining and evening exploration. After a short rest and adjustment to the dry desert climate, head to the world-famous Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring Scenic Area, one of the most iconic desert attractions in China. Riding camels across the golden dunes offers a classic Silk Road experience, while climbing the towering sand mountains reveals breathtaking panoramic views of the oasis and the crescent-shaped spring hidden among the desert sands. As sunset approaches, the colors of the dunes shift dramatically under the evening light, creating one of the most unforgettable landscapes along the Silk Road.

In the evening, explore the bustling Shazhou Night Market, where travelers can experience Dunhuang’s vibrant frontier atmosphere and taste local specialties including donkey meat yellow noodles, grilled lamb skewers, fried pastries, and apricot peel juice. The market is also an excellent place to shop for Silk Road souvenirs such as desert dried fruits, handmade crafts, and artwork inspired by the famous Dunhuang murals. After dinner, return to the hotel and rest before the upcoming exploration of deeper desert and cultural heritage sites.

    Driving Distance: About 370 km
    Driving Time: About 4 hours
Road Conditions: Entire route follows the G30 Expressway with smooth pavement and light traffic; desert sections may experience strong winds and occasional blowing sand near Dunhuang
Passing Areas: Jiayuguan, Guazhou, Yumen, Dunhuang
Core Attractions: Mingsha Mountain, Crescent Spring, Shazhou Night Market

    Self-Driving Travel Tips:

    1. Desert climate conditions around Dunhuang are extremely dry, so carrying moisturizer, lip balm, sunglasses, and sunscreen is highly recommended.
    2. Strong winds and blowing sand occasionally affect roads near Dunhuang, especially during spring, so keep vehicle windows closed when parked outdoors.
    3. Camel riding at Mingsha Mountain is popular during sunset hours, so arriving earlier helps avoid long waiting times.
    4. Temperature differences between daytime and nighttime in the desert are significant, so prepare both lightweight summer clothing and an extra jacket for the evening.
    Day

    7

    Dunhuang Cultural Exploration

Today is a relaxed short-distance self-driving day focused on the cultural treasures of Dunhuang, one of the most historically important oasis cities along the ancient Silk Road. After breakfast, drive from downtown Dunhuang to the world-renowned Mogao Caves, located on the edge of the desert about 25 km from the city center. The access road is fully paved and easy to drive, passing through typical oasis-desert transition landscapes. Often called the “Eastern Louvre” and the “World’s Treasury of Buddhist Art,” the Mogao Caves contain extraordinary Buddhist murals, sculptures, and cave temples created over more than a thousand years of Silk Road history. Guided tours lead visitors through selected caves where vivid paintings, ancient statues, and preserved artistic details reveal the cultural exchanges between China, Central Asia, India, and the Middle East. The combination of religion, trade, and art makes Mogao one of the greatest cultural heritage sites in Asia.

After returning to downtown Dunhuang, enjoy lunch in the old city area and experience more local Silk Road cuisine. Signature dishes such as donkey meat yellow noodles, stir-fried noodle slices, and apricot peel juice remain some of the region’s most popular traditional foods. Following a midday rest, continue to the Dunhuang Museum, which provides deeper insight into the city’s history through ancient relics, Silk Road artifacts, Buddhist artwork, manuscripts, and cultural exhibits related to the surrounding desert civilizations. The museum offers an excellent introduction to the strategic importance of Dunhuang as a crossroads between East and West.

Later in the afternoon, drive to Dunhuang Ancient City, a film-set-style recreation inspired by the architecture of the ancient Silk Road frontier towns. The site preserves traditional desert-style streets, gates, towers, and market areas that recreate the atmosphere of historical Dunhuang during its golden age of Silk Road trade. Visitors can walk through the old streets, explore traditional-style buildings, and photograph the dramatic desert backdrop surrounding the city walls.

In the evening, return once again to the lively Shazhou Night Market, where the colorful desert atmosphere becomes even more vibrant after sunset. Travelers can sample additional local specialties such as roast lamb and stir-fried desert herbs while browsing shops selling handmade crafts, dried fruits, Silk Road souvenirs, and Dunhuang-inspired artwork. The relaxed pace of today’s itinerary provides a perfect balance between cultural exploration and desert leisure before continuing the westward overland journey.

    Driving Distance: About 60 km
    Driving Time: About 1.5 hours
Road Conditions: Entire route follows paved urban and scenic roads with smooth surfaces and easy driving conditions; city traffic around major attractions may become busier during peak tourism hours
Passing Areas: Dunhuang Urban Area, Mogao Caves, Dunhuang Ancient City
Core Attractions: Mogao Caves, Dunhuang Museum, Dunhuang Ancient City, Shazhou Night Market

    Self-Driving Travel Tips:

    1. Tickets for the Mogao Caves must usually be reserved several days in advance during peak travel seasons, especially in summer and holidays.
    2. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the Mogao Caves to protect the ancient murals and sculptures.
    3. Dunhuang’s desert climate remains extremely dry throughout the year, so continue carrying water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and moisturizer.
    4. Parking near Shazhou Night Market can become crowded in the evening, so walking or using nearby public parking areas is recommended.

    8

Dunhuang → Hami | Gobi Desert Highway Journey

After breakfast in Dunhuang, depart at 08:30 and continue west along the G30 Lianhuo Expressway, entering one of the most classic self-driving sections of the ancient Silk Road. The entire route features smooth expressway conditions with light traffic, making it ideal for long-distance overland driving. Along the way, endless Gobi Desert landscapes, scattered drought-resistant vegetation, and occasional camel caravans create a dramatic northwest China road-trip atmosphere. Stop at Liuyuan Service Area for a short break, vehicle inspection, and supplies, especially checking tire pressure before entering the long remote highway section.

Around noon, enjoy a simple Xinjiang-style lunch at the service area, where local dishes such as hand-pulled noodles and polo rice are widely available. After crossing the border between Gansu Province and Xinjiang, the scenery gradually changes as the eastern foothills of the Tianshan Mountains begin to appear beside the desert plains, creating a striking contrast between barren Gobi and mountain silhouettes.

Arrive in Hami around 17:00 and check into a hotel in the city center for convenient dining and shopping access. After a short rest, head to the local food street to experience authentic Xinjiang cuisine. Recommended specialties include fresh Hami Melon, lamb skewers, polo rice, naan bread, and crispy roasted buns. The relaxed evening atmosphere in Hami offers a perfect transition before the upcoming desert crossing adventure.

    Distance: Approx. 400 km
    Driving Time: Approx. 4.5 hours

    Driving Road Conditions:
Entire route via the G30 Expressway with smooth pavement, wide lanes, and relatively low traffic volume. Some sections near the Gansu–Xinjiang border experience strong crosswinds and drifting sand, requiring extra attention to vehicle stability.

    Self-Driving Travel Tips:
Fill up the fuel tank before departure and carry sufficient drinking water and snacks. Wind conditions in the desert corridor can change quickly, so maintain safe highway speeds and keep both hands firmly on the steering wheel during crosswind sections. Xinjiang operates on Beijing Time officially, but local schedules are often about two hours later, so plan meals and rest accordingly.

Hami → Dahai Road Wilderness → Shanshan County | Crossing the Remote Yadan Desert

Depart from Hami at 08:00 after breakfast and drive east along the G30 Expressway for about 50 km before entering the legendary Dahai Road Wilderness, one of the most remote and dramatic off-road routes along the ancient Silk Road. The wilderness section covers approximately 120 km of gravel and rough desert tracks and is strictly suitable only for four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles. Before entering the no-man’s-land, carefully inspect tires, brakes, engine oil, coolant, and recovery equipment, including spare tires, tow ropes, and jacks. Since there are no supply stations inside the wilderness area, fully refuel the vehicle and carry enough water, food, warm clothing, sunscreen, and anti-sand gear for the entire day.

The crossing through the Dahai Road Yadan Landscape offers a spectacular overland experience filled with vast Gobi scenery, wind-eroded rock formations, and endless desert horizons. The gravel road is rough and uneven with loose stones and sandy sections, so maintain a controlled speed between 40–60 km/h to protect the vehicle. Along the route, unique Yadan formations rise from the desert like natural sculptures, creating one of the most photogenic landscapes in western China. Stop several times at safe areas for rest and photography, but avoid leaving the established track to prevent getting stuck in soft sand. Lunch is a self-prepared picnic in the wilderness.

Around 14:00, exit the remote desert section and rejoin the G30 Expressway toward Shanshan County. The road conditions improve significantly, and the scenery gradually changes from barren desert into scattered oasis landscapes. Arrive in Shanshan around 16:00 and check into a hotel near the Kumtag Desert area, an ideal base for the next day’s desert exploration. After resting and refreshing, head to the local food street for authentic Xinjiang cuisine, including lamb skewers, polo rice, naan pit-roasted meat, yogurt, and local cold noodles.

    Distance: Approx. 320 km
    Driving Time: Approx. 6 hours

    Driving Road Conditions:
The Dahai Road section consists of rough gravel tracks, washboard surfaces, loose stones, and sandy terrain, suitable only for experienced off-road driving with a 4WD vehicle. The later section on the G30 Expressway is smooth, wide, and easy to drive with light traffic.

    Self-Driving Travel Tips:
A four-wheel-drive off-road vehicle is mandatory for the Dahai Road crossing. Prepare sufficient fuel, food, water, navigation equipment, and emergency rescue tools before entering the wilderness area. Do not leave the established route, especially in sandy sections. Strong sunlight, wind, and large day-night temperature differences require proper desert clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, and warm outerwear.

After breakfast in Shanshan County, drive to the nearby Kumtag Desert, one of the rare deserts in the world directly connected to an urban area. The short drive from downtown takes only about 10 minutes on smooth paved roads. Upon arrival, begin an exciting desert off-road experience using a four-wheel-drive vehicle, driving across rolling sand dunes and experiencing the thrill of desert terrain navigation. During the journey, stop at designated safe areas for photography, sand activities, camel riding, or sand sliding while enjoying panoramic views of the golden desert landscape. The contrast between the desert dunes and nearby oasis settlements creates one of the most iconic scenery experiences in eastern Xinjiang.

After the desert adventure, return to downtown Shanshan for lunch and enjoy local Xinjiang specialties such as polo rice, roasted buns, and stir-fried sand onions with eggs. Following a short rest, continue westward along the G30 Lianhuo Expressway toward Turpan. The highway conditions are excellent, and the landscape gradually changes from barren Gobi terrain into lush oasis farmland. Along the route, large vineyards begin to appear beside the road, signaling arrival into China’s famous grape-producing region.

Arrive in Turpan around 15:00 and check into a hotel near the scenic Grape Valley area for convenient sightseeing access. After a short break, visit the vineyard valley and stroll beneath traditional grape trellises while tasting fresh local varieties such as seedless white grapes and horse-milk grapes. The area also offers insight into traditional raisin production and oasis agriculture culture that has flourished along the Silk Road for centuries.

In the evening, head to the local night market to sample authentic Turpan cuisine, including lamb skewers, polo rice, roasted buns, and yogurt sticky rice desserts before returning to the hotel for rest.

    Distance: Approx. 180 km
    Driving Time: Approx. 2.5 hours

    Driving Road Conditions:
Most of the day uses paved roads with smooth highway conditions and moderate traffic. The Kumtag Desert driving section consists of loose sand terrain and requires a four-wheel-drive off-road vehicle with careful low-speed driving techniques.

    Self-Driving Travel Tips:
Desert driving should be done cautiously to avoid entering soft sand areas without momentum. Reduce tire pressure slightly if necessary and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns on dunes. Turpan experiences extremely high summer temperatures, so prepare sun protection, cooling supplies, and sufficient drinking water throughout the day.

Turpan → Korla | Crossing Mountains, Oases & River City Nights

Depart at 08:30 from Turpan and drive south along the G3012 Tuha Expressway, entering one of the most geographically diverse sections of Xinjiang self-driving travel. The highway is well-maintained with smooth pavement and stable traffic flow, but the key section through Ganqu Valley requires special attention. This mountainous corridor features loose rock formations and potential landslide risks during rainy periods, so reduce speed to below 60 km/h and stay alert for roadwork updates via local traffic channels.

As you leave Turpan, the landscape gradually transitions from desert basins to a fascinating mix of Gobi desert and fertile oasis farmland. Along the route, vast cotton fields, vineyards, and small pastoral settlements appear intermittently, offering a vivid contrast of Xinjiang’s agricultural diversity. Stop at Tuokexun Service Area for a short break and enjoy a simple Xinjiang-style lunch such as polo rice or roasted buns before continuing westward.

In the afternoon, pass through Yanqi Hui Autonomous County, where traditional Hui ethnic villages line the highway. White-walled courtyards and green oasis landscapes create a peaceful rural scene, perfect for brief roadside photography at designated safe stops. Continue driving and arrive in Korla around 15:30. Check into a hotel near the Kongque River Scenic Belt, an ideal location for evening relaxation and riverside walks.

After resting, head out in the late afternoon to explore the Kongque River promenade. Known as the “Pear City,” Korla is famous for its lush riverbanks lined with pear trees. As the sun sets, the river reflects city lights, creating a calm and elegant nighttime atmosphere. In the evening, visit the local food street to enjoy signature Xinjiang dishes such as roasted whole lamb, Korla fragrant pears, Big Plate Chicken with hand-pulled noodles, and crispy baked buns.

    Distance: Approx. 380 km
    Driving Time: Approx. 4.5 hours

    Driving Road Conditions:
Entire route follows the G3012 Tuha Expressway, with smooth asphalt and moderate traffic. The Ganqu Valley section includes mountainous terrain with potential rockfall risks and occasional construction zones, requiring reduced speed and careful driving.

    Self-Driving Travel Tips:

Korla → Kuqa | Tarim Basin Oasis & Ancient Kucha Culture

Depart at 09:00 from Korla and continue south along the G3012 Tuha Expressway, entering the eastern edge of the vast Tarim Basin. This section of highway is smooth and well-maintained, but several accident-prone stretches (around KM 530 and KM 565) require extra caution due to fast-moving traffic and long curved sections. Maintain a safe following distance of at least 100 meters and avoid sudden lane changes or speeding.

Along the way, the landscape gradually opens into the unique oasis corridor of southern Xinjiang. Vast poplar forests, farmland belts, and traces of the Tarim River system appear intermittently beside the highway, creating a rare contrast between desert and greenery. Stop at Luntai Service Area for a short rest, where you can refill water, enjoy snacks, and prepare for the final stretch toward Kuqa.

Arrive in Kuqa around noon and check into accommodation near the old town area, close to Kuqa Royal Palace and the historic streets. This location allows easy access to cultural attractions and traditional food streets. After lunch, enjoy Kuqa’s signature cuisine, including freshly baked Kuqa naan bread, roasted lamb buns, and fragrant hand-pulled rice, all reflecting the deep culinary heritage of the region.

In the afternoon, visit the Kuqa Royal Palace, a cultural landmark blending Central Plains architectural influence with Central Asian design elements. Explore its courtyards, museum exhibits, and historical artifacts that reflect the legacy of the ancient Kucha Kingdom, once an important Buddhist cultural center along the Silk Road. Afterward, stroll through the old town streets such as Tianshan Road and local bazaars, where traditional mud-brick houses, carved wooden doors, and handicraft shops create a strong sense of history and daily life.

In the evening, head to Kuqa Night Market to experience local food culture. Try clay pot lamb soup, Kuqa-style fried noodles with vegetables and lamb, and yogurt rice desserts with honey. After exploring the lively night atmosphere, return to the hotel for rest.

    Distance: Approx. 280 km
    Driving Time: Approx. 3 hours

    Driving Road Conditions:
Entire route follows the G3012 Expressway, with smooth pavement and generally light traffic. However, several designated accident-prone sections require careful driving, especially due to long curves and higher vehicle speeds.

    Self-Driving Travel Tips:
Maintain strict speed control on high-risk highway segments and keep a safe distance from other vehicles. When visiting old town areas, parking spaces are limited and streets are narrow, so park in designated areas and explore on foot for safety and convenience.

Kuqa Full-Day Self-Drive Exploration | Tianshan Grand Canyon & Ancient Kucha Heritage

Depart at 08:30 from your hotel in Kuqa, driving along G217 Highway toward the Tianshan Grand Canyon (approx. 70 km, 1.5 hours). The road is fully paved and in good condition, with only light curves along the way, suitable for steady driving at 60–80 km/h.

On the way, pass through Yanshui Valley Scenic Area and Hongshan Stone Forest, where you can stop at designated safe pull-off areas for photos. Yanshui Valley features striking red-brown cliffs with naturally sculpted formations, while Hongshan Stone Forest showcases dramatic red rock pillars shaped by erosion over time, creating a powerful desert landscape.

Arrive at Tianshan Grand Canyon, a natural geological wonder with entrance fee around 40 RMB per person. The canyon stretches approximately 5.5 km and is known for its towering red sandstone walls shaped by millions of years of wind and water erosion. Walk through narrow and wide sections of the canyon trail, where sunlight filters through the cliffs creating dramatic light-and-shadow effects. The total hiking distance is about 4 km, moderate difficulty, suitable for most travelers. There are no facilities inside the canyon, so bring sufficient water and light snacks.

Return to Kuqa city around noon for lunch. Visit Kuqa Old Street Food Area, where you can try local specialties such as Kuqa-style fried noodles (thicker texture and rich sauce flavor compared to other regions) and clay pot lamb (Kangro meat), best enjoyed with freshly baked naan bread. Rest for about one hour after lunch to avoid midday heat.

In the afternoon, drive to Subashi Buddhist Ruins (approx. 20 km, 30 minutes). This UNESCO-listed site dates back to the Wei and Jin dynasties and was once a major Buddhist center of the ancient Kucha Kingdom. Explore remains of stupas, temple foundations, and ancient structures while learning about the region’s deep Buddhist heritage. Guided tours are recommended for historical context.

Continue to Kuqa Naan City, located about 5 km from the city center. This cultural site offers live demonstrations of naan baking, where you can observe traditional hand-kneading and oven baking techniques. Visitors may also try making naan and taste freshly baked bread. Daily performances of Kucha dance and music are held at 16:30 and 18:00, offering an immersive cultural experience. Fresh naan can also be purchased as travel food for the next journey.

In the evening, explore Kuqa Old Town Night Street, where you can enjoy local snacks such as grilled lamb skewers, dried figs, and traditional sand date cakes. The old town comes alive at night with glowing streetlights, busy stalls, and a strong local atmosphere. After exploring, return to the hotel for rest.

    Distance:

    Approx. 160 km

    Driving Time:

    Approx. 2.5 hours

    Driving Road Conditions:

Entire route is paved and in good condition. The G217 section includes mild curves, while areas near Tianshan Grand Canyon are narrower and require careful passing. Overall traffic is light and driving is smooth.

    Self-Driving Travel Tips:

Bring sufficient drinking water and snacks before entering Tianshan Grand Canyon, as there are no facilities inside. Drive carefully on narrow canyon approach roads and use designated parking areas in old town districts due to limited space and pedestrian activity.

Kuqa → Minfeng | Crossing the Taklamakan Desert via Desert Highway

Depart at 06:00 from Kuqa and begin the full-day crossing of the Taklamakan Desert along the G580 Desert Highway, heading toward Minfeng County (approx. 560 km, 10 hours). This is a dedicated desert highway route, suitable only for 4WD vehicles, and strictly prohibited for 2WD vehicles.

Before departure, ensure the vehicle is fully prepared: check tires, brakes, engine oil, and coolant. Carry essential recovery equipment including a spare tire, jack, and tow rope. Fuel must be filled completely in Kuqa (recommended PetroChina or Sinopec stations). There are almost no refueling or food services along the route, so bring sufficient drinking water, energy drinks, dry food, and sealed emergency meals. Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) and warm clothing are necessary due to extreme temperature differences between day and night.

The G580 Desert Highway runs straight across the vast Taklamakan Desert, offering one of the most surreal driving experiences in the world. The road is smooth and well-maintained, with a strict speed limit of 80 km/h enforced by cameras. Along the way, you will pass endless sand dunes, scattered poplar forests, and isolated desert oases. The “reed grid” and sand fixation engineering system along the highway represents one of the largest desert control projects in the world, forming a striking contrast against the desert landscape.

During the journey, make several short stops at desert water stations. These stations provide basic drinking water and limited facilities. Take breaks every 2–3 hours for hydration and stretching. Lunch is self-prepared and should be eaten in designated safe rest areas. Avoid long stops in open desert areas due to wind and drifting sand. Always stay on the highway and avoid driving onto soft sand, which can cause vehicles to get stuck.

Arrive in Minfeng County around 16:00. Located on the southern edge of the Taklamakan Desert, Minfeng is the first settlement after the desert crossing. Check into a local hotel and rest for about 2 hours to recover from the long drive. Shower, hydrate, and replenish energy.

In the evening, explore Minfeng Food Street and enjoy local cuisine. Try grilled lamb skewers, hand-pulled rice (polo), freshly baked naan bread, and stir-fried eggs with wild desert herbs (locally known as desert scallion), a signature ingredient of the region. After dinner, return to the hotel for early rest.

    Distance:

    Approx. 560 km

    Driving Time:

    Approx. 10 hours

    Driving Road Conditions:

Entire route follows the G580 Desert Highway, featuring long straight paved sections with minimal curves. Road surface is generally good, but occasional sand accumulation may occur. Wind and sand conditions can affect visibility. The route is suitable only for 4WD vehicles and requires full self-sufficiency.

    Self-Driving Travel Tips:

Ensure full fuel, water, and food supplies before entering the desert. Strictly follow the 80 km/h speed limit and avoid sudden stops or detours. Stay on the paved highway at all times, as desert sand is extremely soft and vehicles can easily become stuck. Monitor weather conditions closely, especially wind and sandstorms.

Minfeng → Hotan | Oasis Villages & Ancient Silk Road Markets

Depart at 09:00 from Minfeng County and drive toward Hotan (Hetian) via G217 National Highway and local regional roads (approx. 290 km, 4 hours). This section of the journey leaves the deep desert behind and gradually enters the lush southern edge of the Tarim Basin, transitioning into a continuous oasis landscape.

The road is mainly a two-lane national highway with generally good pavement and light traffic. There are no tolls along the route. As you travel south, the scenery becomes increasingly green: vast cotton fields, wheat plots, and orchards of pomegranates, walnuts, and jujube trees stretch across the desert plain. Traditional Uyghur villages appear along the roadside, with mud-brick houses, poplar-lined streets, and livestock grazing nearby, offering a vivid glimpse of daily life in southern Xinjiang.

Stop briefly at Andier Township for a short rest. This small settlement provides basic services such as shops and restrooms, and is a good place to refill water and snacks before continuing the drive. The atmosphere here reflects the slow-paced rural life of the region.

Around noon, pass through Yutian County, an important agricultural hub in southern Xinjiang. Stop in the county town for lunch at a local restaurant. Try traditional dishes such as hand-pulled rice (polo), freshly baked lamb-stuffed buns (samsa), and local specialty roasted eggs (chicken, duck, or goose eggs baked with spices), which are a unique regional delicacy. After lunch, take a short rest and check vehicle condition before continuing.

In the afternoon, continue along the highway toward Hotan. Along the way, you may see sections of the Yulongkash River, one of the major rivers feeding the Hotan region and historically associated with jade extraction. Occasionally, local villagers can be seen near the riverbed searching for jade stones, a traditional activity that reflects Hotan’s long-standing reputation as the “Jade Capital.”

Arrive in Hotan City around 17:00 and check into a hotel near Beijing East Road or the city center. This area provides convenient access to major attractions such as the bazaar and night market. After resting for about an hour, recover from the drive and prepare for evening exploration.

In the evening, visit the Hotan Grand Bazaar, one of the largest traditional markets in southern Xinjiang. The bazaar is a lively cultural hub where you can find handcrafted jade jewelry, carpets, dried fruits, traditional clothing, and musical instruments. It is also a great place to experience Uyghur culture through music and dance performances. When shopping for jade, it is recommended to choose reputable shops to ensure authenticity.

Continue to the Hotan Night Market, located nearby, where you can enjoy a wide range of local food. Try grilled lamb skewers (often cooked over red willow branches for added aroma), kumaqi (a Hotan-style baked bread filled with lamb and onion), yogurt rice with honey and raisins, and baked eggs with soft yolk. After dinner, return to the hotel for rest.

    Distance:

    Approx. 290 km

    Driving Time:

    Approx. 4 hours

    Driving Road Conditions:

Route follows G217 National Highway and regional roads, with generally smooth pavement and light traffic. The road is mostly two-lane and passes through rural oasis landscapes. Occasional pedestrian, livestock, and agricultural vehicle crossings require attention.

    Self-Driving Travel Tips:

Drive carefully in rural sections where animals and pedestrians may cross the road unexpectedly. Maintain moderate speed and stay alert in village areas. When visiting bazaars and night markets, parking can be crowded—use designated parking lots and secure valuables properly.

Depart at 08:30 from Hotan (和田) and drive west along the G3012 Tuha Expressway toward Kashgar (喀什), crossing the southern edge of the Tarim Basin (塔里木盆地). This long-distance desert highway is smooth and well-maintained, with regular service areas every 50–80 km offering fuel, food, and rest facilities.

Along the way, the landscape of southern Xinjiang unfolds dramatically between desert and oasis. You will pass agricultural belts and oasis settlements surrounded by vast desert terrain. The route features cotton fields, wheat farmland, and orchards of Hotan jujube (和田红枣), walnuts, and pomegranates, reflecting the rich oasis agriculture of the region.

Stop at Yecheng Service Area (叶城服务区) for rest and refueling. Yecheng (叶城) is historically known as the starting point of the Xinjiang–Tibet Highway (新藏公路), making it a symbolic stop along this journey.

Continue west toward Shache County (莎车县 / Yarkand). An optional stop can be made at Shache Ancient Town (莎车古城), where traditional Uyghur streets and clay-brick architecture preserve the cultural legacy of the Silk Road. This area is also known for local specialties such as Shache almonds (巴旦木) and dried figs.

After Shache, the route continues across open desert highway sections. In some areas, especially near exposed plains, strong crosswinds may occur. Maintain a steady speed below 80 km/h and keep a safe following distance of at least 150 meters, particularly for SUVs and high-profile vehicles.

Arrive in Kashgar (喀什) around 17:00 and check in near Kashgar Old City (喀什古城). Recommended accommodation includes boutique hotels and guesthouses close to the historic district, allowing easy access to major attractions such as Kashgar Old City (喀什古城) and Id Kah Mosque (艾提尕尔清真寺).

In the evening, explore Kashgar Old City (喀什古城). As night falls, the ancient clay-brick alleys and traditional Uyghur houses glow under warm lighting, creating one of the most atmospheric cultural scenes along the Silk Road. Wander through handicraft shops selling Uyghur silk scarves, Hotan jade (和田玉), dried fruits, and local souvenirs.

Dinner is recommended at Kashgar Night Market (喀什夜市) or nearby restaurants. Signature dishes include roasted whole lamb (烤全羊), Uyghur naan bread (烤包子/馕), hand-pulled rice (手抓饭), and clay pot lamb (缸子肉), all representing the rich culinary heritage of Kashgar (喀什).

Kashgar Local Loop | Pamir Plateau & High-Altitude Lakes Self-Drive Tour

Depart at 08:30 from Kashgar (喀什) and drive along Pamir Highway / Paimai Avenue (帕米尔大道) toward the Pamir Plateau (帕米尔高原) and Muztagh Ata (慕士塔格峰) region. This is one of the most scenic high-altitude self-driving routes in Xinjiang, with smooth asphalt roads and dramatic mountain landscapes. Note that sections of Pamir Avenue (帕米尔大道) have truck restriction periods (07:00–09:00 and 18:00–20:00), while light vehicles can pass normally.

The route first passes through Gez Canyon (盖孜峡谷), the gateway to the Pamirs. The canyon features steep cliffs and rugged rock formations, creating a powerful transition from desert plains to high mountains. There are designated pull-off areas for safe photography.

Continue toward Bulunkou White Sand Lake (布伦口白沙湖), arriving around 11:00. This high-altitude lake (ticket approx. 40 RMB) sits beside white sand dunes and turquoise water, with snow-capped peaks in the background. The scenery combines desert, lake, and snow mountains in a surreal composition unique to the Pamir region (帕米尔地区). Walk along the lakeside trail and enjoy the panoramic views. Local herders often sell simple snacks such as grilled lamb skewers and dried yak meat.

At noon, continue along the route toward Tashkurgan direction (塔什库尔干方向) for lunch at a roadside restaurant. Try local high-altitude specialties such as yak meat (牦牛肉), naan-baked lamb (馕坑肉), and rich highland yogurt (高原酸奶), known for its refreshing and digestive properties—especially helpful at high altitude (around 3000–4000m).

In the afternoon, drive to Karakul Lake (卡拉库里湖), located about 30 km from White Sand Lake. This high-altitude lake (approx. 3600m) offers one of the most iconic views in the region: the reflection of Muztagh Ata (慕士塔格峰, 7546m, “Father of Ice Mountains”) mirrored on the lake surface. Snow mountains, grasslands, and crystal-clear water create a breathtaking panorama. Optional horse riding is available along the lakeshore for a more immersive experience.

Unforgettable and Memorable Trip to Fujian

We wanted to do a 7-day trip to Zhangzhou, Yongding, Quanzhou and Xiamen. We enquired with Yaso who assigned a very responsive travel consultant, Emma who helped us craft our itinerary. We visited the Hakka T(ulou Earthen Buildings), and even stayed overnight in one of the hillside villages nearby. It truly helped us immerse in the culture and ambience of the area. We also visited the buzzing fishery ports and live seafood markets of Quanzhou and Xiamen, and tasted the very diversified, freshest and most delicious seafood of the two cities. We also visited unique seaside villages like Xunpu, architecturally and historically unique ancient villages like Wulin and Chongwu, not forgetting the beautiful island escape, Gulangyu. We were assigned a very friendly and knowledgeable guide Adam, who is sensitive to our needs and preferences and often go out of his way to create a truly wonderful experience throughout the trip, one that showed us the culture, history, daily lives and cuisine of the area beyond the surface. We were also given a clean and comfortable car to travel around, and Mr Chen, the driver is safe and reliable. Emma was also always on hand and responsive to address any little hiccups along the way, and make our trip safe comfortable, smooth and very enjoyable. A big thank you to Adam, Emma and Mr Chen. I highly recommend Yaso, and will certainly consider them for future travel in China.

Unforgetable Days With West China Tours

What is gone is gone, what is to come keeps coming. The memories with West China tours, however, has been engraved in my mind and will be lasted as long as my life is there. With its considerate services, cosy accomodation, warmhearted guides and drivers, West China Tours really gave me an experience that different from the ones that all by my self or with other agencies. It was totally beyond my expectation when I saw our destination Shangri-la. It was such a picturesque place where has clean rivers and blue sky. During my stay here, the visits to Pudacuo national park and one local family under the help and introduction of our guide made a deep impression on me and even gave me an imptus to llive here some day in the futture. Thanks to West China tours, I can have such an amazing and unforgetable experience in Shangri-la. May it also benefits you on your way.

    A mazing time in yunnan

Just finished a six-day trip to Kunming, Jianshui and Yuanyang. Here are some things I want to share. The schedule was really well planned. We didn’t feel rushed or tired at all, and we had plenty of time to sightsee and relax every day. All the meals were halal, and we tried Jianshui grilled tofu, which was really unique and tasty. I usually get carsick before, but the vehicle was spacious and the driver’s skill was good, so I felt fine during the whole trip. Our tour guide was a wonderful, friendly and thoughtful guy, communication was not a problem at all. I’m so glad to have made a new friend in China. Haigeng Dam in Kunming has beautiful scenery, and we even got the chance to feed the migrating seagulls. What I recommend most is the Yuanyang Terraced Fields. It was such a huge surprise for me because I had never seen before! Besides the amazing natural scenery, you can also see the wisdom of the local people in how they make use of the land. If I ever get the chance to visit Yunnan again, definitely will choose here again.

    a wonderful trip memory

As the No.1 Best Seller Yunnan itinerary, the trip is truly worthwhile. First of all, the selection of destinations is very valuable, since Kunming, Lijiang, Dali, and Shangri-La could represent the complex natural landscapes and diverse ethnic cultures in Yunnan Province. Secondly, it is rational to choose high-speed rail as the mode of transport, as we can witness China's rapid development and significantly shorten the time we spend on the road, by the way, as a solo traveler, I could choose to stay in the quiet carriage, which provided me a comfortable place to rest. Then, the tour guide services are worthwhile, which could make our trip have more meaningful engagement, especially in Yunnan, not only the wonderful landscapes but also the ethnic and cultural diversity. What was most impressive about the trip was the Dali discovery. The Three Pagodas was marvelous, and walking along the Erhai Lake S bay could be one of the most leisure time in my life. Xizhou ancient town was also a great place, where we experienced a unique culture of the Bai minority. The tour guide recommended that we try the Bai three-course tea experience, which could be an unforgettable memory. I think it was an essential part to deeply understand the Bai minority’s culture. All in all, this trip was so great that I can’t wait to recommend it to my friends and invite them to have a meaningful trip with me in Yunnan.

    Great time in Lijiang

Overall, we had a great time in Lijiang. The experience with our tour guide, Xiao Wu, was amazing. We didn't just enjoy ourselves, we also learned a lot about the history of Lijiang and China. She was very knowledgeable. The driver was punctual and helpful and the van was very comfortable too. All places we were brought to were very delicious. They followed our request to go only the Halal restaurants. We really appreciate that all the food was pre-ordered, so it was ready by the time we reached the restaurant. Highly recommend Yaso Trip for everyone!
