This 28-day Silk Road cycling expedition covers approximately 2,600–2,700 km from Xi’an in Shaanxi Province to Urumqi in Xinjiang, following one of the most historically significant trade corridors in the world. The route passes through the Loess Plateau and the entire Hexi Corridor of Gansu Province before crossing the vast Gobi Desert into Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, ultimately reaching the capital city of Urumqi.
The journey is designed as a comprehensive long-distance cycling and expedition experience, combining cultural heritage, extreme natural environments, and endurance riding. It follows major historical and modern transport corridors such as G312, S240, S245, and G335, connecting key Silk Road cities including Lanzhou, Wuwei, Zhangye, Jiayuguan, Dunhuang, and Hami. A highlight of the route is the 4-day unsupported desert crossing between Dunhuang and Hami, where riders camp in the Gobi wilderness, testing navigation, survival skills, and physical endurance.
The overall terrain features dramatic elevation changes, from the Guanzhong Plain and Loess Plateau to the Hexi Corridor oasis belt, then into the harsh Gobi Desert, and finally into the northern foothills of the Tianshan Mountains. The tour is best suited for experienced cyclists with prior long-distance and camping experience, offering a rare opportunity to traverse the full length of the Silk Road by bicycle.
