The morning begins with a long and continuous ascent toward Khangbala Pass (岗巴拉山口, 4,990m). The climb is steady and demanding, requiring patience and endurance as you gain nearly 1,000 meters of elevation.

From the top, you are rewarded with your first breathtaking view of Yamdrok Lake (羊卓雍措), one of Tibet’s three sacred lakes. Its turquoise waters stretch endlessly between snow-covered mountains.

Nangartse – Karola Glacier – Simila Pass – Gyantse (Ride 102 km)

Today’s ride combines glaciers, high passes, and historic Tibetan towns.

You start from Nangartse (浪卡子县) and gradually climb toward Karola Glacier (卡若拉冰川), one of Tibet’s most accessible and dramatic glaciers. The icy walls rise just beside the highway, offering a close-up view of frozen Himalayan landscapes.

After passing the glacier, you continue climbing toward Simila Pass (斯米拉山口, 4,335m). The terrain is mixed with rolling ascents and short descents, testing your rhythm and endurance.

The final stretch is a smooth descent into Gyantse (江孜), a historic Tibetan town known for its fortress and traditional culture.

Gyantse – Pelnan – Shigatse (Ride 95 km) | Farmland Cycling into Tibet’s Second City

Today is a relatively easier and highly scenic cycling day from Gyantse (江孜) to Shigatse (日喀则), Tibet’s second-largest city.

You leave Gyantse and ride through wide agricultural valleys filled with barley fields, small Tibetan villages, and open grassland scenery. The road is mostly flat with gentle rolling sections, making it a good recovery day after the glacier and pass crossings.

Along the way, you pass Pelnan (白朗方向区域) and several farming settlements where locals work the land using traditional methods. The landscape feels softer and more pastoral compared to previous high-altitude mountain stages.

You gradually approach Shigatse (日喀则), with increasing traffic and urban development as you enter the city.

    Riding Distance: 95 km
Terrain: Mostly flat with light rolling farmland roads
Road Condition: Fully paved highway, good condition
    Cycling Tips:

    • Use this stage to recover and maintain steady cadence
    • Expect mild headwinds across open farmland areas

Today you leave Shigatse (日喀则) and ride westward along quieter roads toward Xietongmen (谢通门县), following the upper Brahmaputra River (雅鲁藏布江) region.

The route avoids the main China–Nepal highway and instead follows a more peaceful countryside road surrounded by farmland, river plains, and scattered Tibetan villages. This section offers a more remote and authentic riding experience.

The terrain is generally flat with long straight stretches, allowing for steady and rhythmic cycling. You will pass open valleys where the Brahmaputra River system shapes the landscape.

Arrive in Xietongmen County (谢通门县) by late afternoon.

    Riding Distance: 86 km
    Terrain: Flat river valley cycling
Road Condition: Paved secondary road, low traffic
    Cycling Tips:

    • Ideal stage for maintaining endurance rhythm
    • Watch for occasional crosswinds in open valley sections
    • Carry snacks—services are limited between towns
    • Pace yourself evenly; no major climbs today

    Day

    9

Xietongmen – Phuntsoling Monastery – Lhatse (Ride 99 km) | Cultural Monastery & Plateau Transition

Today’s route continues deeper into western Tibet, heading toward Lhatse (拉孜县).

You ride through wide plateau landscapes dotted with Tibetan villages, farmland, and distant mountain ranges. The road is mostly smooth and gently rolling, with long stretches of open highland scenery.

A key highlight today is a visit to Phuntsoling Monastery (彭措林寺), an important local monastery known for its murals and peaceful surroundings near the river plains. It offers a cultural break during the ride and a glimpse into local religious life.

After the monastery stop, you continue riding toward Lhatse (拉孜县), a key junction town on the route toward Everest region.

    Riding Distance: 99 km
Terrain: Gentle climbs and rolling plateau roads
Road Condition: Paved highway with moderate traffic near Lhatse
    Cycling Tips:

    10

Lhatse – Gyatso La Pass (5,248m) – Pelba (Ride 84 km) | Everest Viewpoint Crossing

Today is one of the most dramatic and demanding stages of the entire journey as you ride toward the gateway of the Everest region.

Leaving Lhatse (拉孜县), you begin a steady and long ascent toward Gyatso La Pass (嘉措拉山口, 5,248m), the highest point on the G318 highway (318国道). The climb is gradual but relentless, and the thin air becomes noticeably challenging as you approach the pass.

At the top, you are rewarded with a breathtaking first panoramic view of the Himalayan giants. On clear days, you may catch your first glimpse of Mount Everest (珠穆朗玛峰) rising in the distant Himalayan range like a white pyramid above the clouds.

After the pass, a long and smooth descent leads you into lower valleys toward Pelba (佩尔巴地区).

    Riding Distance: 84 km
Terrain: Long ascent → extreme altitude pass → long descent
Road Condition: Fully paved highway, exposed to strong winds
    Cycling Tips:

    • Expect cold wind, possible snow or hail at the pass
    • Ride slowly at altitude over 5,000m to avoid exhaustion
    • Keep warm gloves and windproof jacket ready
    • Control speed carefully on long downhill sections

Highlight: Gyatso La Pass (嘉措拉山口) + first distant view of Mount Everest (珠穆朗玛峰)

    Day

    11

Pelba – Everest Nature Reserve – Tashizong Village (Ride 65 km) | Entering Everest Region

Today you officially enter the protected Mount Everest Nature Reserve (珠穆朗玛峰自然保护区), one of the most sacred and scenic regions in Tibet.

From Pelba (佩尔巴), the road turns south toward the Himalayas. You will gradually leave the main highway and enter more remote plateau landscapes with fewer villages and more dramatic mountain scenery.

A major highlight is crossing Gawula Pass (嘎瓦拉山口, 5,200m), one of the best viewpoints in the entire region. From here, you can see a full panorama of Himalayan peaks, including Everest (珠穆朗玛峰), Makalu (马卡鲁峰), Lhotse (洛子峰), and Cho Oyu (卓奥友峰) on clear days.

After the pass, you descend into valleys leading to Tashizong Village (扎西宗村).

    Riding Distance: 65 km

    Day

    12

Tashizong Village – Rongbuk Monastery – Everest Base Camp (Ride 50 km) | Arrival at Mount Everest

Today is the most emotional and unforgettable day of your entire journey—you reach Everest Base Camp (珠峰大本营).

From Tashizong Village (扎西宗村), the road becomes more rugged as you ride deeper into the Himalayas. The landscape opens into vast glacial valleys and alpine desert terrain with stunning views of snow-covered peaks.

You may pass small settlements like Basum Village (巴松村) before reaching Rongbuk Monastery (绒布寺), the highest monastery in the world. From here, the first full view of Mount Everest (珠穆朗玛峰) appears—towering directly ahead.

    Riding Distance: 50 km
Terrain: Gradual approach → high plateau → final ascent to Base Camp

    Cycling Tips:

    • Take it slow—this is extreme altitude territory
    • Expect strong UV radiation and cold winds even in sunshine
    • Keep warm layers accessible until arrival
