7 Days Northeast China Winter Adventure Tour with Changbai Mountain & Wusong Island

After breakfast, meet your guide and begin a full-day exploration of Harbin’s most iconic winter attractions.

Start with Siberian Tiger Park (东北虎林园), the world’s largest Siberian tiger breeding base, home to over 1,300 tigers. This unique wildlife park allows you to safely observe tigers, white tigers, lions, and even ligers in semi-wild conditions. You may choose a safari-style bus ride through the enclosures for an up-close experience, including optional feeding activities through reinforced glass barriers. This is one of the most thrilling wildlife encounters in China.

Next, proceed to Sun Island Scenic Area (太阳岛风景区), the main venue of the International Snow Sculpture Art Expo (国际雪雕艺术博览会) during winter. Covering approximately 60,000 square meters, the park showcases massive snow sculptures created by international artists. These works include mythological figures, architectural landmarks, fantasy scenes, and cultural installations. The dazzling white landscape creates a surreal “snow art city,” ideal for photography. Due to strong sunlight reflection, sunglasses are highly recommended.

In the afternoon, continue to the highlight of the day—Harbin Ice & Snow World (哈尔滨冰雪大世界), the world’s largest ice and snow theme park. Built using ice blocks from the frozen Songhua River, the park features towering ice castles, illuminated sculptures, and themed zones that come alive at night with colorful LED lighting. Over 2,000 ice artworks create a fantasy-like frozen kingdom.

Optional activities inside the park include:

• Super Ice Slide (one of the longest ice slides in the world)
• Snowflake Ferris Wheel with panoramic views of the ice city

The park operates from late December to late February (seasonal), and the best experience is after sunset when the entire ice city glows in vibrant colors.

Travel Tips:
Harbin winter temperatures usually range from -10°C to -20°C. It is essential to dress in layers using a “thermal + insulation + windproof” system. Gloves, hats, scarves, and waterproof boots are highly recommended. Electronic devices may lose battery quickly in cold weather, so keep power banks warm.

If Ice & Snow World is not open (outside festival season), alternative indoor attractions include the Four-Season Amusement Hall and Dream Ice & Snow Hall, offering interactive ice-themed experiences year-round.

After breakfast, meet your guide and driver for a scenic overland journey from Harbin (哈尔滨) to China Snow Town (中国雪乡, Shuangfeng Forest Farm 双峰林场), located in Mudanjiang region. The drive takes approximately 4.5–5 hours (around 280 km), passing through one of the most beautiful winter highways in Northeast China.

En route, travel along the famous Yaxue Highway (亚雪公路, Yabuli–Snow Town Highway), widely regarded as one of China’s most spectacular winter routes. The landscape gradually transforms into a continuous snow-covered wilderness, with dense forests, frozen valleys, and rolling white mountains. At higher elevations (around 1,300m+), you may stop at viewpoints to admire panoramic snowfield scenery and pristine alpine forests.

Upon arrival at China Snow Town (中国雪乡), check in to your hotel and rest briefly. Later, take a relaxed walk along Xueyun Street (雪韵大街), the main street of the village. Traditional wooden houses line both sides, decorated with red lanterns that glow warmly against thick snow layers that can reach up to 2 meters in winter.

Optional winter activities include skiing, snow tubing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, snowmobiling, and dog sledding (extra cost). One of the most popular experiences is the “boiling water into ice (泼水成冰)” experiment, where hot water instantly freezes into mist in the freezing air, creating a dramatic photo moment.

In the evening, enjoy the lively atmosphere at Snow Town Night Disco Square (雪乡迪斯科广场), followed by a walk along the illuminated Fairy Tale Walkway (栈道观景台), where glowing wooden houses create a magical snow village scene.

After breakfast, depart from China Snow Town (中国雪乡) and continue your journey toward Jingpo Lake (镜泊湖), a drive of approximately 3–3.5 hours (around 188 km). Along the way, enjoy changing landscapes from deep forest snowfields to volcanic lake scenery.

Arrive at Jingpo Lake Scenic Area (镜泊湖景区), one of China’s largest alpine lava barrier lakes, formed by ancient volcanic eruptions. In winter, the lake transforms into a frozen wonderland surrounded by ice cliffs, forests, and misty mountain scenery.

The first highlight is Diaoshuilou Waterfall (吊水楼瀑布), a rare frozen waterfall in winter. Depending on conditions, you may also witness the famous cliff diving performance, a long-standing local tradition performed by experienced divers into icy waters below.

Next, visit Heilong Pool (黑龙潭), where frozen lake surfaces and snow-covered trees create a tranquil winter landscape ideal for photography. You will also experience Jingpo Lake Ice Fishing (镜泊湖冬捕), a traditional winter activity where fishermen drill through thick ice to catch fresh fish. In peak season, you may also observe the ceremonial ice fishing rituals and taste freshly prepared local fish dishes.

After sightseeing, continue by road to Dunhua City (敦化市) for overnight accommodation. The drive takes about 1.5–2 hours (135 km). Upon arrival, check into your hotel and rest for the night.

Morning Drive to Changbai Mountain: After breakfast, depart Dunhua for a scenic 3-hour drive (180 km) to Changbai Mountain, one of China’s 10 Most Famous Mountains. The journey passes through snow-laden forests and small rural villages, offering glimpses of Northeast China’s winter wilderness.

Northern Slope Sightseeing: Take the sightseeing bus up to Tianchi (天池, Heavenly Lake), perched at 2,189 meters, the highest volcanic lake in the world. Marvel at the lake’s emerald waters, encircled by 16 volcanic peaks, and learn about the legends of the Tianchi Monster.

Changbai Waterfall (长白瀑布): Descend to the 68-meter volcanic waterfall, the longest volcanic waterfall on Earth, where icy mist creates an ethereal winter landscape.

Scenic Drive to Jilin City: Embark on a 6-hour drive (433 km) along snow-covered roads with occasional mountain vistas. This is a chance to relax, enjoy the winter landscape, and photograph small villages along the way.

Beishan Park (北山公园): Upon arrival in Jilin, visit this historic park known as the “sacred ground for nine dragons.” Enjoy winter sports like ice skating and skiing, or climb to Lanyue Pavilion (蓝月阁) for panoramic city views blanketed in snow.

Evening in Jilin: Stroll along the snow-covered streets, try local winter snacks, or relax in your hotel.

Tips: Wear warm layers; winter in Jilin is -10°C to -25°C, often windier than mountain areas.

Morning at Wusong Island: Drive about 1.5 hours to Wusong Island (Rime Island, 五松岛). Witness the world-famous rime frost, where tree branches are covered with thick, glistening ice crystals, creating a dreamlike winter wonderland.
