Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Jingshan Park & Summer Palace

Your first full day introduces you to some of Beijing’s most important imperial and historical landmarks. Start at Tiananmen Square, one of the city's most recognizable public spaces and a central landmark of Beijing. From here, continue into the Forbidden City, the former imperial palace complex, where you can explore its monumental gates, grand ceremonial halls, courtyards, and traditional palace architecture.

After exploring the Forbidden City, continue to Jingshan Park, located just north of the palace complex. The park provides an excellent elevated viewpoint over the Forbidden City and the surrounding central area of Beijing. It is also a pleasant place to experience traditional landscaped scenery within the historic heart of the city.

In the afternoon, visit the Summer Palace, one of Beijing’s most celebrated imperial garden complexes. The visit combines historic architecture and expansive natural scenery, with landscaped gardens, pavilions, waterways, and views around Kunming Lake. The peaceful setting provides a contrast to the monumental architecture of the morning.

In the evening, you may choose an optional traditional entertainment performance, such as an acrobatic show or Peking Opera, offering an opportunity to experience another aspect of Chinese performing arts. After the day's sightseeing, return to your hotel in Beijing.

    3

Temple of Heaven, Beijing Hutongs & Transfer to Chengde

Begin the day with a visit to the Temple of Heaven, one of Beijing’s major imperial heritage sites. The complex was associated with ceremonies performed by Ming and Qing emperors, and its carefully planned architecture and surrounding parkland offer an insight into the ceremonial traditions of imperial China.

Continue into Beijing’s traditional Hutongs, where narrow lanes and historic residential courtyards provide a different perspective on the city's past. Explore the neighborhood by traditional rickshaw and visit a local family, allowing you to see the atmosphere of traditional residential Beijing and gain a closer impression of everyday life in the city's older communities.

After the Beijing sightseeing, depart for Chengde, traveling approximately 225 km from Beijing. The journey takes you away from the capital toward the historic imperial resort area of northern Hebei. Along the way, the itinerary includes a stop at Two-Pagoda Peaks, providing an opportunity to enjoy the surrounding landscape and photograph the distinctive pagoda scenery.

Continue to Chengde and check in at your hotel upon arrival. Chengde will be the base for the following day's exploration of the Qing Dynasty's imperial summer retreat and surrounding Buddhist temples.

Chengde Mountain Resort & Imperial Buddhist Temples

Spend the day exploring the imperial heritage of Chengde, beginning with the Chengde Mountain Resort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important surviving imperial garden complexes from the Qing Dynasty. Built as a summer retreat for Qing emperors, the resort combines expansive gardens, lakes, hills, traditional architecture, and scenic landscapes. Take time to explore its different areas and appreciate how the natural surroundings were incorporated into the design of the imperial retreat.

Continue to Putuo Zongcheng Temple, often known as the “Little Potala Palace” because of its impressive Tibetan-style architectural features. The temple complex provides an opportunity to learn about the relationship between the Qing imperial court and Tibetan Buddhist traditions, while its elevated buildings and large-scale structures create some of the most distinctive scenery in Chengde.

The sightseeing continues with Puning Temple, another important Buddhist site in the city, followed by Pule Temple. Together, these temples reflect the religious diversity and cultural connections represented in Chengde's imperial heritage. Their architecture, religious spaces, and surrounding mountain scenery make them particularly interesting for travelers interested in history, architecture, and Buddhist culture.

After visiting the major attractions, return to your hotel in Chengde for an overnight stay and prepare for the following day's Great Wall hiking experience.

Begin the hike at Zhuanduokou and follow the Great Wall toward Big Jinshan Tower, passing landmarks such as General Tower and Small Jinshan Tower along the way. The route provides opportunities to walk along restored and more rugged sections of the wall while enjoying broad views across the surrounding mountains and valleys.
