Experience the coastal landscapes, maritime culture, historic architecture, traditional cuisine, and living heritage of the Chaoshan region on this two-day journey through Shantou, Nan’ao Island, and Chaozhou. The tour combines two distinctive offshore destinations—Mayu Island and Nan’ao Island—with the ancient streets, temples, mansions, and cultural traditions of Chaozhou. Guests stay at the same hotel in central Shantou for one night, reducing unnecessary packing and hotel changes.

On the first day, travel from Shantou to Mayu Island and Nan’ao Island, crossing the spectacular Nan’ao Bridge to visit Changshanwei Lighthouse, offshore aquaculture farms, the Natural Gate Tropic of Cancer Landmark, and Qing’ao Bay. A boat-based marine experience and Nan’ao seafood lunch provide a closer look at the island’s fishing traditions and coastal lifestyle.

The second day focuses on the history and cultural heritage of Chaozhou. Explore Longhu Ancient Village, the Han Yu Memorial Temple, Guangji Bridge, the Riverside Promenade, Paifang Street, Jiadi Lane, and Kaiyuan Temple. The journey also includes a Chaoshan beef hotpot lunch and a complimentary cultural experience featuring Gongfu Tea and Chaozhou Opera before transfer to the airport or railway station.

Explore Mayu Island, a small historic island in Shantou Bay known for its temples, fishing boats, coastal walkways, maritime landmarks, and traditional village atmosphere. Cross the approximately 11-kilometer-long Nan’ao Bridge and enjoy panoramic views of the sea, islands, fishing boats, and coastal mountains. Photograph Changshanwei Lighthouse, one of Nan’ao Island’s most popular seaside landmarks. Drive along Nan’ao’s scenic coastal road and admire offshore fishing villages, colorful marine farms, the Lonely Tree, and distant wind turbines. Enjoy a fresh Nan’ao seafood lunch featuring local marine ingredients. Take part in a marine fishing and aquaculture experience, including a boat trip through oyster farms and an introduction to ecological sea farming. Visit the Natural Gate, the island’s distinctive Tropic of Cancer landmark. Relax at Qing’ao Bay, known for its crescent-shaped beach, clear water, soft sand, and attractive coastal scenery. Explore Longhu Ancient Village, where more than one hundred ancestral halls, official residences, merchant mansions, academies, and temples preserve architectural styles from several historical periods. Admire traditional Chaoshan craftsmanship, including woodcarving, stone carving, ceramic inlay, shell carving, painted decoration, and lime sculpture. Visit the Han Yu Memorial Temple and learn about the Tang Dynasty scholar and official’s lasting influence on Chaozhou. View Guangji Bridge, one of China’s celebrated ancient bridges, famous for its distinctive combination of stone piers, pavilions, and a movable pontoon section. Walk along the scenic Chaozhou Riverside Promenade beside the Han River. Explore Paifang Street and Jiadi Lane, where memorial arches, old shops, traditional mansions, local snacks, and handicrafts create the atmosphere of historic Chaozhou. Visit Kaiyuan Temple, one of the most important Buddhist temples in eastern Guangdong. Taste authentic Chaoshan beef hotpot, one of the region’s most representative culinary experiences. Enjoy a complimentary Chaoshan Gongfu Tea and Chaozhou Opera experience in a traditional historic residence. Travel with a dedicated vehicle and guide on a shopping-free itinerary with no compulsory activities, allowing more time for cultural exploration and sightseeing.

    Shantou – Mayu Island – Nan’ao Island

After breakfast, meet your guide at the designated pickup point in Shantou and depart for Mayu Island, a small island located in the city’s inner bay. The island was once an important coastal-defense outpost because of its strategic position between Shantou’s inner and outer harbors. It was opened to visitors in 1979 and has since become a relaxed coastal destination known for fishing boats, wooden walkways, colorful wall paintings, temples, historic buildings, and sea-view platforms.

Explore the island’s characteristic maritime scenery and discover landmarks such as the Old Mazu Temple, New Mazu Temple, Donghai Putuo Mountain Temple, Sea Dragon King Temple, Sea Goddess Statue, Sea-Viewing Pavilion, Shuangzhong Temple, and nearby Luyu Lighthouse. The combination of traditional religious culture, fishing-village life, and views beneath Shantou Bay Bridge makes Mayu Island an attractive introduction to the region’s connection with the sea.

Continue toward Nan’ao Island, Guangdong’s only island county, by crossing the spectacular Nan’ao Bridge. Stretching approximately 11 kilometers across the sea, the bridge offers wide views of the South China Sea, coastal hills, fishing boats, and offshore islands.

After arriving on Nan’ao Island, visit Changshanwei Lighthouse, one of the island’s most popular photography locations. The colorful lighthouse, rocky shoreline, blue sea, and distant bridge create an impressive coastal setting.

Drive along the scenic coastal road and admire the Offshore Fishing Village, the colorful floating buoys of the Rainbow Sea Ranch, the famous Lonely Tree, and the distant wind turbines of Windmill Mountain. These landscapes reveal the close relationship between Nan’ao’s natural scenery, fishing traditions, marine farming, and renewable-energy development.

Enjoy an included Nan’ao seafood lunch, featuring fresh local marine ingredients prepared according to seasonal availability.

After lunch, take part in a marine fishing and aquaculture experience. Board a local boat and travel through offshore oyster farms, where rows of brightly colored floating buoys spread across the deep-blue sea. Learn how oysters are cultivated and harvested, observe ecological marine farming, and enjoy views of the island’s mountains, wind turbines, fishing boats, and coastal villages.

Depending on weather, tides, and safety conditions, guests may also participate in a simple oyster-harvesting activity, offering families and children a hands-on opportunity to understand how fresh seafood travels from the sea to the dining table.

Continue to the Natural Gate, Nan’ao Island’s famous Tropic of Cancer landmark. Located at Qing’ao Bay, this symbolic tower incorporates astronomy, geography, nature, and life into its distinctive design. It is one of China’s Tropic of Cancer marker towers and the only one located on an island.

Finish the day at Qing’ao Bay, one of Nan’ao Island’s most beautiful beaches. The crescent-shaped bay is known for its clear water, fine sand, coastal forests, gentle waves, and relaxing island atmosphere. Enjoy free time to walk along the shore, take photographs, collect shells, feel the sea breeze, or relax beside the water when conditions permit.

After sightseeing, return to Shantou and check in at the arranged city hotel. Dinner is not included, allowing guests to explore local restaurants, seafood stalls, or popular Chaoshan food venues independently.

Longhu Ancient Village – Chaozhou Ancient City

After breakfast at the hotel, meet your guide and depart for Longhu Ancient Village, a well-preserved historic settlement famous for its traditional layout of three main streets and six lanes.

More than one hundred ancestral halls, official residences, merchant mansions, academies, and temples are distributed throughout the village. Important buildings include Fangbo Mansion, Jinshi Mansion, Tanhua Mansion, Xiuyi Mansion, Xu Clan Ancestral Hall, Longhu Academy, the Former Residence of Xia Yulai, and Tianhou Temple.

During the visit, admire outstanding examples of traditional Chaozhou craftsmanship, including woodcarving, stone carving, ceramic inlay, shell carving, painted decoration, and lime sculpture. Decorative doorways, carved stone columns, lions, mythical animals, plaques, couplets, and colorful murals reflect architectural styles from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The village is often described as an open-air museum of traditional mansion culture.

Continue to Chaozhou, a National Famous Historical and Cultural City. Visit the Han Yu Memorial Temple, built in honor of the celebrated Tang Dynasty scholar and official Han Yu. Although he served in Chaozhou for less than eight months, local tradition remembers his efforts to promote education, improve public administration, release bonded servants, and deal with crocodiles that threatened residents along the river.

If the memorial temple is temporarily closed, the visit may be replaced with the Thai Buddhist Temple according to local arrangements.

Proceed to the Han River for an exterior view of Guangji Bridge, also known as Xiangzi Bridge. The bridge is famous for its distinctive structure of stone piers, traditional pavilions, and a movable pontoon section traditionally described as “eighteen floating boats and twenty-four bridge piers.”

Together with Zhaozhou Bridge, Luoyang Bridge, and Lugou Bridge, Guangji Bridge is regarded as one of China’s four celebrated ancient bridges. Walking onto the bridge is optional and requires a separate entrance ticket.

Enjoy lunch featuring authentic Chaoshan beef hotpot, one of the region’s most representative culinary experiences. Fresh beef is divided into different cuts and briefly cooked in a light broth to preserve its tenderness and natural flavor.

After lunch, stroll along the Chaozhou Riverside Promenade beside the Han River. The landscaped walkway combines ancient trees, seasonal flowers, refreshing river breezes, and views of important landmarks such as Guangji Bridge, Han Yu Memorial Temple, Phoenix Pagoda, Guangji Gate Tower, the ancient city wall, and historic temples.

Visit Guangji Gate Tower, one of the most recognizable symbols of Chaozhou Ancient City, before entering Paifang Street along Taiping Road. The historic pedestrian street is lined with memorial archways, traditional shops, snack stalls, tea stores, embroidery workshops, woodcarving boutiques, and local specialty shops.

Continue through Jiadi Lane, where old mansions preserve classic Chaoshan residential layouts such as Four-Point Gold houses and Si Ma Tuo Che compounds. Narrow lanes, grey-brick walls, carved wooden doors, inner courtyards, and decorative rooflines provide a close look at the domestic architecture of historic Chaozhou families.

Visit Kaiyuan Temple, one of the most important Buddhist temples in eastern Guangdong. Originally established during the Tang Dynasty, the temple preserves a traditional arrangement of grand halls, ceremonial courtyards, Buddhist statues, incense burners, decorative roofs, and carved architectural details. Entry is subject to the temple’s operating schedule and may be restricted during major religious events.

Later, enjoy a complimentary cultural experience featuring Chaoshan Gongfu Tea and Chaozhou Opera in a century-old residence. Learn about the careful brewing methods, miniature teacups, traditional teapots, and hospitality rituals of Gongfu Tea while gaining an introduction to Chaozhou Opera, a regional theatrical tradition performed in the Chaoshan dialect.

Depending on the available time, guests may independently visit additional ancient-city attractions such as Jilue Huanggong Ancestral Hall, Xu Imperial Son-in-Law Mansion, Haiyang Confucian Temple, or the Jao Tsung-I Academic Museum.

At the designated time, meet your guide and transfer to Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport, Chaoshan Railway Station, or another confirmed departure point, bringing the two-day Chaoshan cultural and island journey to an end.

Meals: Hotel breakfast and Chaoshan beef hotpot lunch included; dinner not included
    Accommodation: Tour ends

Please note: The order of attractions may be adjusted according to traffic, weather, attraction opening hours, sea conditions, performance schedules, and local operating arrangements. Admission to Guangji Bridge, ancient-city headsets, scenic-area shuttle vehicles, and personal expenses are not included unless otherwise confirmed.
