Route Overview
After spending the night at the foot of Changbai Mountain (长白山), dedicate the morning and early afternoon to exploring the most iconic natural attraction in Northeast China before continuing to the vibrant Korean-Chinese city of Yanji (延吉). This day combines volcanic landscapes, alpine ecosystems, hot springs, waterfalls, and ethnic minority culture.
Scenic Drive Conditions
The route follows the well-maintained Changbai Mountain Tourist Highway, one of the most scenic mountain roads in Jilin Province. Dense forests, mountain streams, wetlands, and volcanic landscapes dominate the scenery. Roads are paved and easy to navigate, with gentle mountain curves and excellent signposting.
Detailed Sightseeing Program
Changbai Mountain North Slope Scenic Area (长白山北坡景区)
The North Slope is the most accessible and comprehensive section of Changbai Mountain, offering access to all major attractions via a network of eco-buses.
Heaven Lake (Tianchi, 天池)
Located at the summit volcanic crater, Heaven Lake is the highest and most famous crater lake in China. Surrounded by sixteen volcanic peaks and lying directly on the China–North Korea border, the lake changes appearance throughout the day as clouds and sunlight transform its colors. On clear days, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the entire volcanic basin.
Changbai Waterfall (长白瀑布)
Fed by Heaven Lake, this is the highest volcanic waterfall in Northeast Asia. Water plunges dramatically down black volcanic cliffs, creating mist-filled scenery and a constant thunderous roar.
Julong Hot Springs (聚龙温泉群)
A geothermal wonder where boiling mineral-rich water emerges from volcanic fissures. Steam rises year-round from hundreds of hot spring vents scattered across the valley floor. Visitors can sample the famous hot spring eggs cooked naturally in geothermal water.
Green Abyss Pool (绿渊潭)
One of Changbai Mountain’s most photogenic locations. A waterfall cascades into a deep emerald pool surrounded by birch forests, volcanic rocks, and seasonal wildflowers.
Underground Forest (地下森林)
A unique volcanic collapse forest formed after an ancient eruption. Wooden boardwalks descend into a lush valley filled with towering spruce, fir, and Korean pine trees, creating an immersive primeval forest experience.
Afternoon Transfer to Yanji
After completing the mountain excursion, drive east toward Yanji (延吉), the capital of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture (延边朝鲜族自治州). The landscape gradually changes from alpine forests to fertile valleys, rice paddies, and traditional Korean villages.
