Leave Bangkok before the main rush hour and keep the Ayutthaya visit focused on the principal monuments. Rest every two hours, watch for motorcycles entering from local roads and refuel before the final section to Sukhothai. Avoid arriving after dark.

Visit Sukhothai Historical Park early in the morning, including Wat Mahathat, Wat Si Sawai, Wat Sa Si and the monumental seated Buddha at Wat Si Chum.

Depart Loei at approximately 08:00 and drive toward Nong Khai, passing rolling hills, rural farming communities and sections near the Mekong River. Arrive before midday and return the Thai rental vehicle at the authorized Nong Khai location. If the vehicle will be collected later, leave it only in a prearranged secure parking facility.

Carry all luggage to the border checkpoint and complete Thai departure formalities. Take the official shuttle bus across the First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge and complete Lao immigration procedures. Meet the prearranged Chinese-registered vehicle and support team outside the Lao border-control area, then continue to Vientiane.

If time permits, visit Pha That Luang, Patuxai or the Mekong riverside night market after checking in.

Keep passports, immigration documents and valuables with you before returning the Thai vehicle. Do not leave a rental car at the border without written authorization. Confirm the precise Lao-side meeting point for the Chinese vehicle and remember that Thailand drives on the left while Laos drives on the right.

Spend the morning exploring Vientiane, beginning with Pha That Luang, the golden national symbol of Laos. Continue to Patuxai, the city’s landmark victory arch, and Wat Sisaket, known for its cloister containing thousands of Buddha images.

After lunch, drive north to Vang Vieng. The scenery gradually changes from the plains around Vientiane to rice fields, rural villages and dramatic limestone karst mountains. After checking in, join an optional sunset hot-air balloon experience and admire the Nam Song River, karst peaks, farmland and villages from the air. After landing, relax beside the river or explore Vang Vieng’s evening market.

The balloon experience is subject to weather, visibility and the operator’s final safety assessment. Advance reservations are recommended. If the afternoon flight is unavailable, it can be rescheduled for sunrise on Day 6, subject to the day’s departure schedule.

Leave Vientiane shortly after lunch so there is sufficient time to check in and reach the balloon launch site. Carry Lao currency for tolls and refuel before departure. Watch for motorcycles, pedestrians and livestock near villages. Do not consume alcohol before driving or participating in the balloon experience.

Leave Vang Vieng early and drive north through the mountain landscapes of central Laos. If the Day 5 sunset balloon flight was cancelled, a sunrise flight may be arranged before departure, but the remaining schedule must be adjusted accordingly.

The drive toward Luang Prabang reveals limestone peaks, forested slopes, deep valleys and isolated rural communities. Continue to Kuang Si Waterfall, where turquoise pools and multi-tiered cascades are surrounded by tropical rainforest and walking trails.

After visiting the waterfall, drive to Luang Prabang. Depending on the arrival time, visit Wat Xieng Thong, the Royal Palace Museum and the gilded temples of the UNESCO-listed old town. End the day with sunset from Mount Phousi or a walk beside the Mekong River.

After entering China, follow Chinese speed limits, road signs and lane rules immediately. Check the brakes and fuel level before entering the expressway.

Depart Jinghong in the morning and drive to Nannuo Mountain, one of Xishuangbanna’s best-known ancient Pu’er tea regions. Ancient tea forests cover the mountain slopes, while traditional Hani stilt-house villages are scattered among the plantations.

Visit an ancient tea garden and learn about traditional Pu’er tea production. Depending on the season and local arrangements, participate in tea picking, withering, rolling, processing and tasting. The experience provides an authentic introduction to the relationship between ancient tea trees, mountain ecology and Hani culture.

Return to Jinghong in the afternoon and visit Manting Park, the former royal garden of the Dai Kingdom, followed by the Tropical Flower Garden. In the evening, enjoy Dai cuisine, a cultural performance or the night scenery beside the Lancang River.

Visit the tea gardens and learn about Bingdao’s tea-growing traditions before continuing to Lincang.

After lunch, continue toward Chuxiong, passing from the mountainous landscapes of western Yunnan into the broader basins of central Yunnan. Continue along the expressway to Kunming, known as China’s “Spring City,” and check in at the hotel after arrival.

Leave Nanjian early enough to allow two to three hours in Weishan Ancient Town. Use headlights in tunnels, maintain a safe following distance and select lower gears during extended descents. Rest at an expressway service area before the final drive into Kunming, where traffic can become heavy during the evening rush hour.

Spend the final morning exploring Kunming Old Street, including Wenming Street, Guanghua Street and Jingxing Street. These historic neighborhoods preserve traditional architecture, old commercial buildings, local markets, craft shops and cultural boutiques.

Walk through the pedestrian areas, visit Jinma Biji Square if time permits and sample local specialties such as Crossing-the-Bridge Rice Noodles and Yunnan flower pastries. Depending on the departure schedule, return the vehicle and transfer to Kunming Changshui International Airport or Kunming railway station. The 14-day Thailand–Laos–Yunnan expedition ends in Kunming.
