This 11-day Xinjiang Birding Tour explores one of China’s most ecologically diverse regions, stretching across the vast landscapes of northern and western Xinjiang (新疆). The journey moves through dramatic contrasts—from the arid Gobi deserts and steppe grasslands around Urumqi and Karamay, to the boreal forests of Altay and Burqin, and the rich wetlands of Ulungur Lake.

Xinjiang’s enormous territory, complex geography, and isolation from central China have created an exceptional haven for wildlife. This route is designed to maximize encounters with both Central Asian and Eurasian bird species, many of which are rare or localized in China.

Traveling by private off-road vehicle, the tour combines comfortable logistics with intensive birding across multiple habitats, offering one of the most comprehensive wildlife experiences in Northwest China.

    Tour Highlights

    Arrival in Urumqi

Driving Time: ~30–60 min (airport to hotel transfer)
    Altitude: ~800–900m
Road Conditions: Urban highways and city roads

Upon arrival at Urumqi Diwopu International Airport (乌鲁木齐地窝堡国际机场), you will be met by your private birding guide and driver. After a short meet-and-greet, you will be transferred to your hotel in the city center.

Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang (新疆) and the largest city in northwestern China, surrounded by vast desert basins and distant snowy peaks of the Tianshan Mountains (天山山脉).

If arrival time permits, a light introductory birding session can be arranged at nearby urban parks or reservoirs, where early species such as Common Myna, Eurasian Tree Sparrow, Black Redstart, and Eurasian Magpie may be observed.

In the evening, enjoy a welcome briefing with your bird guide covering:

    • Tour route and habitat overview
    • Key target species strategy
    • Weather and cold-climate preparation tips
    • Bird photography guidance for Xinjiang conditions

Relax and rest after your flight, preparing for the intensive birding days ahead.

Highlights: First introduction to Xinjiang birding, urban birding opportunities

    Day

    2

Urumqi (乌鲁木齐) → Baihu Lake (白湖) → Nanshan Mountains (南山)

    Altitude: 900m → 1,800–2,500m
Road Conditions: Asphalt highways + mountain access roads

Today marks the beginning of full birding exploration in Xinjiang (新疆), combining wetlands and mountain ecosystems in a single day.

    Morning – Baihu Lake (白湖湿地)

We start early at Baihu Lake (白湖), an important wetland system west of Urumqi (乌鲁木齐). This site is one of the best early-season waterbird locations in the region, attracting both resident and migratory species.

Midday – Transition to Nanshan Mountains (南山)

After wetland birding, we drive south toward the foothills of the Tianshan Mountains (天山), where landscapes quickly shift from semi-desert to alpine meadows and forest edges.

Lunch will be taken en route or at a mountain village.

Afternoon – Nanshan Mountain Birding (南山区域)

The Nanshan area offers rich montane bird diversity with steep elevation gradients, making it one of the most productive birding zones near Urumqi.

    Key species include:

    • Golden Eagle (金雕)
