Walk through Tiananmen Gate and enter the magnificent Forbidden City, the former imperial residence of 24 emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Surrounded by forested mountains, Mutianyu is known for its impressive watchtowers, steep ridgelines, and relatively peaceful atmosphere.

Take an enclosed cable car to Watchtower No. 14 and begin walking westward along the restored wall. Pass a succession of ancient watchtowers while admiring sweeping views of the Great Wall winding over the surrounding mountains. The standard walk is suitable for most travelers, while those seeking a more demanding experience may continue up the steep Great Man Slope toward Watchtower No. 20, the highest accessible point in this section. Beijing–Tai’an: Temple of Heaven, Beijing Hutongs and High-Speed Train to Tai’an

After breakfast, visit the magnificent Temple of Heaven, one of Beijing’s most important imperial ceremonial complexes. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, emperors came here to worship Heaven and pray for favorable weather and abundant harvests. Explore its elegant halls, circular altars, and symbolic architecture, including the celebrated Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.

The surrounding park is also a lively gathering place for local residents. In the morning, you may see people practicing Tai Chi, dancing, singing, flying kites, playing traditional instruments, or writing Chinese calligraphy with water on the stone pathways. These everyday activities provide an engaging glimpse into contemporary Beijing life.

Continue to the historic Beijing Hutongs, a network of narrow lanes lined with traditional courtyard residences. Ride through the old neighborhoods by rickshaw, explore small shops and local streets, and visit a family living in a traditional courtyard home. This personal encounter offers insight into the architecture, customs, and changing lifestyle of old Beijing.

After the tour, transfer to the railway station and board a high-speed train to Tai’an, the gateway to sacred Mount Tai. The journey takes approximately three hours. Tai’an–Qufu: Mount Tai, Middle Heaven Gate, South Heaven Gate and Heavenly Street

After breakfast, drive to Mount Tai, one of China’s Five Great Mountains and the country’s most revered sacred peak. Rising to approximately 1,545 meters, Mount Tai has been a place of imperial worship and religious pilgrimage for more than 3,000 years. Numerous emperors climbed the mountain to perform ceremonies to Heaven and Earth, while scholars and poets left thousands of calligraphic inscriptions along its slopes. Its exceptional cultural history and natural scenery earned it recognition as a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site.

Arrive at the visitor center and take a sightseeing bus along the winding mountain road to Zhongtianmen, or Middle Heaven Gate, situated about halfway up the mountain. From here, board a cable car to Nantianmen, or South Heaven Gate, while enjoying panoramic views of rugged peaks, forested valleys, and dramatic mountain ridges.

Explore the summit area at a leisurely pace. Walk along Heavenly Street, a historic mountaintop route lined with stone buildings and traditional inscriptions, and visit the Jade Emperor Temple, located near the mountain’s highest point. Admire centuries-old calligraphy carved into the cliffs and, when weather conditions permit, enjoy sweeping views across the surrounding plains or the celebrated sea of clouds.

After approximately two hours around the summit, descend by cable car and sightseeing bus. Meet your driver at the visitor center and continue to Qufu, approximately 1.5 hours away. Check in to your hotel and enjoy the evening at leisure.

Travelers seeking a more active experience may replace the cable-car ascent with a hike from Middle Heaven Gate to South Heaven Gate. This demanding route includes more than 6,000 stone steps and can be arranged in advance.

Qufu–Zhengzhou: Temple of Confucius, Cemetery of Confucius and First Writing Ceremony

Begin the day at the southern entrance of the Temple of Confucius, where you may watch the traditional city-gate opening ceremony accompanied by ancient-style music and dance. The performance generally begins in the morning, although schedules may change according to local arrangements.

Enter the Temple of Confucius, one of the largest and most influential Confucian temple complexes in East Asia. Originally established on the site of Confucius’s former residence after his death, the temple was repeatedly expanded by successive dynasties. Its ceremonial halls, courtyards, ancient trees, stone steles, and richly decorated buildings reflect the enduring influence of Confucian philosophy on Chinese education, government, family life, and social values.

Continue to the Cemetery of Confucius, the historic burial ground of Confucius and generations of his descendants. Set within an extensive wooded area, the cemetery contains ancient tombs, stone monuments, ceremonial gates, and inscriptions spanning many centuries. It offers valuable insight into the history of the Kong family and the lasting status of Confucianism in Chinese society.

Take part in a traditional First Writing Ceremony, also known as the Enlightenment Ceremony. In ancient China, this ritual marked a child’s formal entry into education. Dress in traditional costume, receive a symbolic red mark on the forehead representing the opening of wisdom, ring a bronze bell, and practice writing a Chinese character with guidance from an instructor.

After completing the Qufu tour, transfer to the railway station and take a high-speed train to Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province. The journey takes approximately three hours. Upon arrival, meet your local guide and transfer to your downtown hotel.

    7

Zhengzhou–Dengfeng–Luoyang: Henan Museum, Shaolin Temple, Pagoda Forest and Kung Fu Show

After breakfast, visit the Henan Museum, one of China’s leading museums of ancient history and archaeology. Henan Province was at the heart of several early Chinese dynasties, and the museum’s extensive collections provide an excellent introduction to the development of civilization in the Central Plains. Its exhibitions include prehistoric objects, ritual bronzes, ancient jade, ceramics, Buddhist sculptures, and treasures from successive imperial periods.

Among the museum’s most important exhibits are the ancient Jiahu Bone Flute, the Fu Hao owl-shaped bronze vessel, the Prince Wu bronze ding, and an elegant white-jade pendant carved in the form of a dancer. Together, these artifacts reveal the sophisticated craftsmanship, ceremonial traditions, music, and social life of ancient China.

After the museum visit, drive approximately 1.5 hours to Dengfeng, located at the foot of Mount Song. Visit the legendary Shaolin Temple, widely known as the birthplace of Chan Buddhism and the spiritual home of Shaolin Kung Fu. Walk through its historic courtyards, temples, and halls while learning about Buddhist teachings, meditation practices, monastic life, and the relationship between Chan philosophy and martial arts.

Continue to the remarkable Pagoda Forest, the largest surviving collection of historic Buddhist pagodas in China. These brick and stone structures were built as memorials for distinguished Shaolin monks. Their different shapes, heights, decorative styles, and numbers of tiers reflect the status and achievements of the monks they commemorate.

Later, enjoy an authentic Shaolin Kung Fu performance at the Shaolin Martial Arts Hall. Skilled practitioners demonstrate traditional weapons, coordinated movements, extraordinary flexibility, physical conditioning, and techniques developed through years of disciplined training. Selected audience members may occasionally be invited to learn a few basic movements.

After the performance, drive approximately 1.5 hours to Luoyang, one of China’s great ancient capitals. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the evening at leisure.

    8

Luoyang–Xi’an: Luoyang Museum, Longmen Grottoes and High-Speed Train to Xi’an

After breakfast, begin with a visit to the Luoyang Museum, which houses an extensive collection of artifacts unearthed in and around this historic city. As Luoyang served as a capital under several Chinese dynasties, its archaeological heritage spans thousands of years. The museum’s exhibitions include Neolithic pottery, ancient bronzes, ceramics, Buddhist statues, calligraphy, paintings, and imperial objects.

Pay particular attention to the museum’s collection of Tang Dynasty tri-colored glazed pottery, known for its vivid green, amber, cream, and brown glazes. These elegant figures, animals, vessels, and burial objects reflect the prosperity, cultural diversity, and artistic sophistication of Luoyang during the Tang period.

Continue to the UNESCO-listed Longmen Grottoes, located along the limestone cliffs on both sides of the Yi River. Created over several centuries, the grottoes preserve one of the most important collections of Chinese Buddhist sculpture from the Northern Wei and Tang dynasties. Thousands of caves and niches contain statues ranging from tiny devotional figures to monumental images carved directly into the rock.

Explore major sites such as Fengxian Temple, Guyang Cave, and the Binyang Caves while learning how Buddhist art developed after reaching China. The monumental Vairocana Buddha at Fengxian Temple is the masterpiece of the complex, surrounded by disciples, heavenly guardians, and powerful protective figures. Numerous inscriptions also provide valuable evidence of ancient Chinese calligraphy, religious devotion, and artistic patronage.

After the visit, transfer to Luoyang Longmen Railway Station and take a high-speed train to Xi’an, with a journey of less than two hours. Upon arrival, meet your local guide and transfer to your hotel in downtown Xi’an.

    9

Xi’an: Terracotta Warriors, Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and Grand Tang Dynasty Ever Bright City

After breakfast, drive approximately 40 kilometers east of Xi’an to visit the world-famous Terracotta Warriors and Horses, one of China’s greatest archaeological discoveries. The underground army was commissioned by Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor to unify China, to protect his mausoleum and imperial power in the afterlife.

Explore the principal excavation pits, where thousands of life-size warriors, horses, and chariots have stood in battle formation for more than 2,000 years. Each soldier features distinctive facial expressions, hairstyles, clothing, armor, and military ranks. The enormous formations of infantrymen, archers, cavalry units, and charioteers demonstrate both the military organization of the Qin Dynasty and the exceptional skill of ancient Chinese artisans.

After lunch, return to central Xi’an and visit Da Ci’en Temple, an important center for Buddhist scripture translation during the Tang Dynasty. Its most recognizable structure is the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, built under the supervision of the renowned monk Xuanzang to preserve the Buddhist scriptures and sacred objects he brought back from India. Learn about Xuanzang’s long journey along the ancient Silk Road and his influence on the development of Buddhism in China.

In the evening, you may explore the nearby Grand Tang Dynasty Ever Bright City, a lively pedestrian district inspired by the prosperity and cultural brilliance of Tang-era Chang’an. Illuminated buildings, traditional-style streets, public performances, sculptures, and visitors dressed in historical costumes create a memorable nighttime atmosphere.

Optional activities: Dress in traditional Hanfu for photographs or attend a colorful Tang Dynasty music and dance performance.

    Meals: Breakfast and lunch

    Day

    10

Xi’an Departure: Small Wild Goose Pagoda, Xi’an Museum, Ancient City Wall and Muslim Quarter

After breakfast, visit the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, a graceful Tang Dynasty structure set within a peaceful garden. Built in the early eighth century, the pagoda originally contained 15 levels and has survived numerous earthquakes over its long history. Its simple brick design reflects the refined architectural style of the Tang period.

Continue on foot to the adjacent Xi’an Museum, where a rich collection of cultural relics introduces the history of ancient Chang’an and its role as a political, commercial, and cultural center. The museum houses pottery, jade objects, seals, paintings, porcelain, Buddhist statues, stone carvings, and artifacts associated with the Silk Road.

Proceed to the magnificent Xi’an Ancient City Wall, the largest and best-preserved ancient urban fortification in China. Enter through Hanguang Gate and visit the small museum displaying archaeological remains of the earlier Tang Dynasty wall, including ancient gateways, wall foundations, cross-sections, and drainage channels.

Walk along the broad top of the city wall and enjoy panoramic views contrasting traditional neighborhoods with the modern Xi’an skyline. Travelers seeking a more active experience may rent a bicycle and ride along part of the fortification, with the route and duration adjusted according to the available time.

Conclude your sightseeing in the vibrant Muslim Quarter, a historic neighborhood shaped by Xi’an’s long connection with the Silk Road. Wander through its busy lanes, observe local Muslim traditions, browse small shops, and sample regional snacks such as roujiamo, lamb skewers, persimmon cakes, and hand-pulled noodles.

At the appointed time, your guide and driver will transfer you to the airport or railway station for your onward journey.
