This 10-day China Ancient Capitals Tour follows the development of Chinese civilization through imperial capitals, traditional merchant towns, Buddhist centers, and Silk Road gateways. Starting and ending in Beijing, the journey connects Pingyao, Zhengzhou, Dengfeng, Kaifeng, Luoyang, and Xi’an by high-speed train and private vehicle.

Begin in Beijing, where monumental palaces, ceremonial temples, historic neighborhoods, and ancient defensive walls preserve the legacy of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Walk through Tian’anmen Square and the Forbidden City, enjoy panoramic views from Jingshan Park, explore the traditional hutongs near Shichahai, and visit the magnificent Temple of Heaven. A journey outside the capital leads to the Mutianyu Great Wall, where watchtowers rise above forested mountain ridges.

Continue by high-speed train to Pingyao Ancient City, a UNESCO World Heritage site that preserves the layout and atmosphere of a traditional Chinese walled town. Its ancient streets, government offices, temples, merchant residences, courtyard houses, and financial institutions reveal the prosperity of Shanxi merchants during the Ming and Qing periods. An overnight stay inside the old city provides time to experience its quieter lanes and lantern-lit evening scenery.

Travel onward to Henan Province, one of the principal cradles of Chinese civilization. From Zhengzhou, visit Dengfeng and the legendary Shaolin Temple, an important center of Chan Buddhism and Chinese martial arts. Walk through the temple courtyards, watch a Kung Fu performance, and visit the historic Pagoda Forest beneath Mount Song.

In Kaifeng, discover the heritage of the Northern Song Dynasty at Dragon Pavilion Park, the Iron Pagoda, and traditional streets inspired by the city’s once-bustling markets. In Luoyang, explore the magnificent Longmen Grottoes and visit White Horse Temple, traditionally regarded as China’s first officially established Buddhist temple.

Travel west to Xi’an, formerly known as Chang’an and the eastern starting point of the ancient Silk Road. See the world-famous Terracotta Warriors, walk or cycle along Xi’an City Wall, and explore the lively Muslim Quarter and Great Mosque of Xi’an. The tour ends with a high-speed train journey from Xi’an back to Beijing, followed by a private airport transfer for departure.
