Begin the day at the Shenyang Imperial Palace, the former royal residence of the early Qing rulers before the dynasty established its capital in Beijing. Although smaller than the Forbidden City, the palace has a distinctive architectural character combining Manchu, Mongolian and Han Chinese influences.
Explore the main ceremonial courtyards, royal residences and early Qing buildings, including the Dazheng Hall, Ten Princes’ Pavilions, Chongzheng Hall and Phoenix Tower. Red walls, traditional roofs and yellowing courtyard trees create an attractive autumn setting. Allow approximately two hours for the visit.
In the afternoon, continue to Zhaoling Tomb, also known as the Northern Tomb, located within the extensive grounds of Beiling Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the burial place of Emperor Hong Taiji and Empress Xiaoduanwen.
Enter through the southern gate and follow the central route along the spirit way, passing ceremonial stone statues before reaching Long’en Hall, the square citadel and the memorial tower. The park contains more than 2,000 old pine trees, many of which are several centuries old. Their deep green branches contrast with golden deciduous leaves, while yellow reeds line the lakes during autumn.
Allow approximately two and a half to three hours to explore the tomb complex and surrounding parkland. The forest paths and lakeside areas are also popular with local residents enjoying the autumn scenery.
In the evening, visit Xita Korean Cultural Street, one of Northeast China’s largest Korean ethnic commercial districts. Enjoy Korean-style barbecue, cold noodles, rice cakes, kimchi and other regional specialties while experiencing the lively evening atmosphere.
