09:00–10:30 | Private Transfer from Hangzhou to Moganshan
Your private guide and driver will meet you at your hotel, Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, or a railway station in Hangzhou. Travel approximately 1.5 hours by private vehicle to Moganshan Mountain (莫干山) in Deqing County.
As you leave the busy city behind, the urban landscape gradually gives way to peaceful villages, rolling hills, and vast bamboo forests. During the journey, your guide will introduce the history of Moganshan, which became one of China’s most famous summer retreats during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
10:30–12:00 | Moganshan Villas, Queen’s Hotel and Sword Pool
Upon arrival at the Moganshan tourist center, transfer to the scenic-area shuttle bus and travel up the mountain to Yinshan Street (荫山街), the historic center of the resort area.
Begin a relaxing walking tour through the forest-covered villa district, where more than 200 historic villas are scattered among bamboo groves, pine trees, and winding mountain paths. These villas reflect a mixture of Chinese and Western architectural styles and were once used by diplomats, missionaries, business leaders, and prominent political figures.
Visit or view the following highlights:
- Queen’s Hotel (皇后饭店): A historic mountain hotel with an excellent terrace overlooking the surrounding peaks and villas.
- Naked Castle (裸心堡): Admire the castle-like resort from a scenic viewpoint across the valley.
- Sword Pool (剑池): Discover the legendary site associated with the ancient swordsmiths Gan Jiang and Mo Ye, from whom Moganshan is believed to have received its name.
- Sword Pool Waterfalls: Walk beside streams and a series of small waterfalls surrounded by dense bamboo.
- Luhuadang Park (芦花荡公园): Enjoy a peaceful landscaped garden known for its cool springs, shaded paths, and quiet mountain atmosphere.
- Moganshan Cathedral: See the historic stone church that reflects the mountain’s early international community.
The walking route is generally easy, although some sections include stone steps and gently sloping paths.
Optional Morning Hike | Chiang Kai-shek Ancient Trail
Travelers interested in a more active experience may replace part of the scenic shuttle journey with a hike along the Chiang Kai-shek Ancient Trail.
The approximately four-kilometer trail begins near Yu Village (庾村) at the foot of Moganshan and climbs through bamboo forests toward Sword Pool and the central scenic area. The hike normally takes around one hour, depending on walking speed and trail conditions.
12:00–13:00 | Local Farm-to-Table Lunch
Enjoy lunch at a local mountain restaurant surrounded by bamboo forests. The meal features seasonal ingredients sourced from nearby villages and farms.
Typical dishes may include free-range bamboo forest chicken, fresh bamboo shoots, local vegetables, river fish, tofu, and other Deqing specialties. The menu can be adjusted according to dietary requirements when arranged in advance.
13:00–14:30 | Wuling Village and Chiang Kai-shek’s Former Residence
After lunch, take the scenic shuttle to Wuling Village (武陵村), one of the quietest and most historically significant parts of Moganshan.
Visit Songyue Lodge (松月庐), the former summer residence of Chiang Kai-shek. Hidden among pine trees, the residence is often referred to as one of the mountain’s “presidential villas.” Your guide will explain its architectural features, historical background, and connection with important events in modern Chinese history.
Continue walking through Wuling Village to see additional historic villas and enjoy views of the surrounding forested hills.
14:30–15:15 | Dicui Pond
Proceed to Dicui Pond (滴翠潭), a tranquil emerald-colored pond surrounded by bamboo, rocks, and shaded pathways.
One of its most recognizable features is the large Chinese character “翠,” meaning “emerald green,” carved into the cliff beside the pond. This is a popular photography stop and a pleasant place to enjoy Moganshan’s cool, peaceful environment.
15:15–16:00 | Xuguang Platform Panoramic View
Travel by scenic shuttle and walk to Xuguang Platform (旭光台), one of Moganshan’s best panoramic viewpoints.
From the platform, look across rolling mountain ridges, bamboo-covered valleys, historic villas, and distant villages. On clear days, the viewpoint offers excellent opportunities for landscape photography.
Depending on the season, daylight hours, and weather conditions, you may enjoy the warm afternoon light over the mountains. A full sunset experience is generally only possible when the return time to Hangzhou is extended.
Optional Afternoon Hike | Dakeng Scenic Area
Active travelers may choose an approximately two-hour hike through the Dakeng Scenic Area (大坑景区).
This route features rugged mountain paths, rock formations, cliffside viewpoints, dense forests, and wider views than the central villa area. The trail includes more steps and uneven sections, making it better suited to travelers with good physical fitness and suitable walking shoes.
Choosing the Dakeng hike may require shortening other sightseeing stops or returning to Hangzhou later in the evening.
16:00–18:00 | Return to Hangzhou
Take the scenic shuttle down the mountain and meet your private driver at the designated parking area. Relax during the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to Hangzhou.
You will normally arrive at your hotel, the airport, or a railway station between 17:30 and 18:30, depending on traffic, weather, the selected walking route, and your final drop-off location.
The tour concludes after drop-off in Hangzhou.
