Shangri-La cycling connects two of Yunnan's most iconic cities across 260 km of mountain terrain, threading through one of the world's deepest river canyons. The route runs between Shangri-La (香格里拉, Xiānggélǐlā) at 3,280 m (10,761 ft) and Lijiang (丽江, Lìjiāng) at 2,400 m (7,874 ft), passing Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡, Hǔtiào Xiá), the travertine terraces of Baishuitai (白水台, Báishuǐtái), and a cultural arc from Tibetan Buddhist valleys to the ancient Naxi heartland. It is one of the most rewarding cycling routes in southwest China.
Yaso Trip has designed a 9-day guided tour running this route in the Shangri-La to Lijiang direction, with two cultural exploration days at either end and five riding days through the gorge and plateau stages in between. This guide covers the complete route in both directions, stage-by-stage data from the road, permit requirements for foreign cyclists, and everything you need to plan the trip properly.
Why Cycle Between Shangri-La and Lijiang?
Shangri-La to Lijiang Cycling Route Map with Tiger Leaping Gorge ー Yaso Trip
- Two cultures, one route. The ride traces a genuine transition from Tibetan Buddhism — prayer wheels, yak butter tea, monks in saffron — to the matriarchal Naxi world of Lijiang. You feel the shift in architecture, food, and faces as each stage unfolds.
- Tiger Leaping Gorge from above. The cycling route follows the upper motor road (虎香公路, Hǔxiāng Gōnglù) above the gorge rim — not the trekking trail below. Views drop 3,790 m (12,434 ft) to the river, with Haba Snow Mountain (哈巴雪山, 5,396 m / 17,703 ft) on one side and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山, 5,596 m / 18,360 ft) on the other.
- Baishuitai: the route's standout stop. The 300,000 m² travertine terrace platform is geologically similar to Huanglong in Sichuan but draws a fraction of the visitors. Cyclists arrive here at the route's midpoint.
- Manageable altitude with serious mountain character. The route peaks at approximately 3,750 m (12,303 ft) — demanding but well below the 5,000 m+ passes of Tibet routes, making it accessible to fit cyclists without extreme altitude experience.
- An ideal lead-in or extension to Tibet. For cyclists considering or returning from Tibet routes such as the G318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway, this Yunnan route provides a lower-altitude Tibetan cultural experience without the permit complexity.

Shangri-La: Your Tibetan Plateau Starting Point
Shangri-La sits at 3,280 m (10,761 ft) on the southern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Arriving from a low-altitude city and riding the same day is a reliable path to altitude sickness.
Songzanlin Monastery in Shangrila
Napahai Lake in Shangrila
Songzanlin Monastery (松赞林寺, Sōngzànlín Sì) is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan, founded in 1679 by the fifth Dalai Lama. Around 700 monks live here today. Arrive before 09:00 for morning chanting and the best light on the main hall. Entrance: approximately ¥85 (~$12 USD) . Hours: 08:00–18:00.
Napa Lake (纳帕海, Nàpà Hǎi) transforms between seasons: a shallow lake in summer, a golden grassland in autumn when black-necked cranes (黑颈鹤) stop here on their migration south.
Dukezong Ancient Town (独克宗古城, Dúkèzōng Gǔchéng) sustained significant fire damage in 2014 but has been rebuilt using traditional techniques. The core streets and Guishan Hill (龟山) — site of the large prayer wheel — are fully operational as of 2025–2026.
The Cycling Stages: Plateau, Gorge, and Valley
Five riding days, 260 km (162 miles). The stages below follow the Yaso Trip direction — Shangri-La to Lijiang — which is recommended for most riders: you begin acclimatised, and the route's hardest mountain pass becomes a descent. Experienced cyclists wanting the greater challenge can ride the reverse; direction-specific notes are included for each stage.
Stage 1: Shangri-La to Baishuitai — The Plateau Exit
Baishuitai Terraces
Pudacuo National Park
Fact Panel
- Distance: ~95 km (59 miles)
- Direction (S→L): Predominantly descending; Washbasin Pass traversed in descent
- Direction (L→S): ~2,100 m (6,890 ft) elevation gain — the hardest day of the reverse route
- Road: Asphalt, good condition
- Difficulty: Moderate (S→L) / Hard (L→S)
From Shangri-La, a short climb opens into a long descent through the Hengduan Mountains (横断山脉, Héngduàn Shānmài). The route passes Pudacuo National Park (普达措国家公园, Pǔdácuò Guójiā Gōngyuán) — one of China's first national parks built to international standards. Note: the park interior uses shuttle buses; the Yaso Trip tour stops here for a park walk before continuing on the main road.
The Washbasin Pass (洗脸盆垭口) sits at approximately 3,750 m (12,303 ft) and sees rapid weather changes. Wind and snow have been recorded here in all seasons. Pack a down jacket, waterproof shell, and waterproof trousers where you can reach them without stopping.
At the bottom of the descent, Baishuitai (白水台) rewards the effort. The 300,000 m² calcium carbonate platform resembles a frozen white waterfall cascading down a hillside. Entrance: approximately ¥30 (~$4 USD). Best light: mornings in spring or autumn.
Stage 2: Baishuitai to Tiger Leaping Gorge — The Scenic Heart
Jiuxianfeng Viewpoint
Haba Snow Mountain
Fact Panel
- Distance: ~75 km (47 miles)
- Direction (L→S): ~1,600 m (5,249 ft) elevation gain
- Road: Asphalt; Tiger Leaping Gorge road (虎香公路) better maintained than G214 section
- Difficulty: Moderate
When riding the Lower Gorge section, the road passes the Lower TLG tunnel (下虎跳隧道). Running parallel to it is an abandoned old road — rougher surface, about one hour slower — but the gorge views from this stretch are dramatically better than through the tunnel. Worth the detour.
After the tunnel, a 14 km (9 mile) climb leads to Haba Village (哈巴村, Hābā Cūn), where Haba Snow Mountain (5,396 m / 17,703 ft) comes into full view above the rooftops. From here the road descends to the Jiuxianfeng Viewpoint (九仙峰观景台, Jiǔxiānfēng Guānjǐngtái), which faces the distinctive nine-peak ridge directly. This viewpoint doesn't appear in most English guides — ask your guide to stop here.
The stage ends at Tina's Hostel, the main cycling base on the upper gorge road.
Stage 3: Tiger Leaping Gorge — Two Days on the Upper Road
Tiger Leaping Gorge
Tiger Leaping Gorge Hiking
Fact Panel
- Gorge dimensions: 17 km (11 miles) long; ~3,790 m (12,434 ft) deep; narrowest point 25 m (82 ft)
- Cycling route: Upper motor road (虎香公路) — NOT the Lower Trekking Trail
- Base: Tina's Hostel or Halfway Hotel (中途客栈, Zhōngtú Kèzhàn)
- Duration: 2 days (Days 5–6 on the Yaso Trip tour)
The cycling route uses the upper motor road above the gorge — completely separate from the trekking trail below. The upper road gives broader canyon perspectives; the trekking trail gives the closest river contact. Both exist, and they are often confused.
Day 5 is a half-riding, half-exploration day from Tina's: riders cycle to Bendiwan Village (奔地湾村) and Guanyin Waterfalls (观音瀑布, Guānyīn Pùbù) before returning to base — a partial recovery day with the gorge's most intimate views.
Day 6 continues along the upper road toward Daju (大具, Dàjù). The Jinsha River (金沙江, Jīnshā Jiāng) runs jade-green below on clear days, and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is visible from the upper sections.
The cycling route uses the upper motor road (虎香公路). The lower trekking trail is a separate, hiking-only route. As of 2025–2026, some lower trekking access points have changed and may require local guides. The upper road and Tina's Hostel remain fully operational. Confirm current access with your guide before the trip.
The final 4 km climb to Tina's Hostel (on the first arrival from Lijiang direction) gains ~400 m (1,312 ft) on a very steep gradient. Tina's offers a vehicle shuttle for this section (~¥80 per vehicle for 2 people). This is standard practice — not a concession.
Stage 4: Daju to Lijiang via Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Cycling
Lijiang Old Town
Fact Panel
- Distance: ~80 km (50 miles)
- Elevation: Descent to Lijiang at 2,400 m (7,874 ft)
- Difficulty: Moderate — rolling terrain with a memorable mountain approach
The final riding day runs from the gorge exit at Daju through the shadow of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain — snowcapped year-round at 5,596 m (18,360 ft) — past Lashihai Lake (拉市海, Lāshì Hǎi), and down into the Lijiang basin. Arriving at the UNESCO-listed old town by bicycle is a fitting close to the mountain stages.
Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城, Lìjiāng Gǔchéng) is built across three waterways fed by Black Dragon Pool (黑龙潭, Hēilóng Tán). The Naxi (纳西族, Nàxīzú) people built this city; look for the Dongba script (东巴文, Dōngbā Wén) — one of the world's only living pictographic writing systems — carved into signs and painted onto walls.

Route Overview: Shangri-La & Lijiang Cycling at a Glance
Shangri-La & Lijiang Cycling — Stage Overview
Practical Logistics: Best Time, Permits, and Altitude
Best time: April to May and September to October. Spring brings mild temperatures (10–20°C / 50–68°F) and clear mountain views; autumn delivers post-monsoon clarity and golden grassland at Napa Lake. Avoid June to August (monsoon, landslide risk) and December to February (snow and potential road closures at the Washbasin Pass).
Permits: No border defense permit (边防证, biānfáng zhèng) is required for Yunnan Province or Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture — foreigners travel freely on a standard Chinese visa. If continuing from Shangri-La into Tibet, both a Tibet Travel Permit and a border defense permit are required, and independent travel is not permitted. As of May 2026, Yunnan's permit situation is unchanged; confirm with Yaso Trip operators before booking.
Altitude: Shangri-La at 3,280 m (10,761 ft) sits above the threshold for acute mountain sickness (AMS). Do not arrive and ride the same day. Symptoms — headache, nausea, poor sleep — mean descend and rest, not push through. The Yaso Trip itinerary builds two acclimatisation days before any riding for this reason.
Practical notes: Carry cash (¥500–800) for gorge-area guesthouses and village food stops. Phone signal drops to zero in gorge sections — download offline maps before leaving Lijiang or Shangri-La. English signage is reliable in both cities and sparse in between.

Extend Your Tour: Meili Snow Mountain, Chengdu, and the Myanmar Border
The G214 highway continues north from Shangri-La toward Deqin County (德钦县, Déqīn Xiàn) and Feilai Temple (飞来寺, Fēilái Sì), the main viewpoint for Meili Snow Mountain (梅里雪山, Méilǐ Xuěshān). Kawagebo peak (卡瓦格博峰) at 6,740 m (22,113 ft) is sacred to Tibetan Buddhists and has never been summited. From Feilai Temple at ~3,400 m (11,155 ft), on a clear morning, the ice faces catch the sunrise in what many describe as the most powerful mountain view in China.
The extension covers approximately 250 km (155 miles) with two significant climbing days, including Baima Snow Mountain (白马雪山, Báimǎ Xuěshān). Yaso Trip offers this as a customisable add-on to the standard 9-day circuit.
Lijiang is the southern terminus of the South China Cycling route from Chengdu — riders completing that tour can continue directly onto this Shangri-La circuit for a seamless southwest China grand loop.

Tour Route:Tiger Leaping Gorge between Shangrila and Lijiang-Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Lijiang-Baishan City-Lijiang
Key Tips for This Route
- Choose direction deliberately. Shangri-La → Lijiang is recommended for most riders: you arrive acclimatised, and the Washbasin Pass becomes a descent. Lijiang → Shangri-La is significantly harder and better suited to experienced mountain cyclists.
- The abandoned road beside the Lower TLG tunnel. When passing the Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge tunnel (下虎跳隧道), the old road running parallel to it offers gorge views dramatically better than the tunnel route. Surface is rougher and adds about one hour — worth every minute.
- Jiuxianfeng Viewpoint (九仙峰观景台). Faces the nine-peak ridge directly and consistently rates as one of the best views on the entire route. Not in most English guidebooks — ask your guide to stop.
- The 4 km climb to Tina's Hostel. The steep final approach gains ~400 m in 4 km. Arrange the hostel's vehicle shuttle (~¥80 / 2 people) in advance. Widely used by experienced cyclists.
- G214 traffic. The G214 section between Shangri-La and Benzilan (奔子栏, Bēnzǐlán) carries heavier truck traffic than the Tiger Leaping Gorge road. Plan conservative timing on G214 stages.
- Songzanlin Monastery — go early. Before 09:00, morning chanting is audible and tour buses haven't arrived. The entrance fee is approximately ¥85 (~$12 USD).
- Baishuitai timing. The terraces photograph best in morning light with good water levels — spring and autumn are optimal.
Why Travel With Yaso Trip on This Route
The roads are public and self-organised travel is possible in principle. What a solo trip can't provide:
Current access intelligence. Tiger Leaping Gorge access conditions have changed in recent years. Yaso Trip maintains working relationships in the gorge area, including with Tina's Hostel, and handles current access logistics so you don't discover closures at the trailhead.
Cultural translation. The route passes through Tibetan, Naxi, and mixed village communities. Yaso Trip guides bridge the language and cultural gap that turns passing through a place into actually connecting with it. The Tibetan family visit on Day 2 in Shangri-La is a Yaso Trip-arranged experience.
Support vehicle and backup. Mountain roads at altitude are not where you want to discover a snapped derailleur cable 60 km from the nearest bike shop. The support vehicle carries tools, spare parts, and riders who need it on steep gorge sections.
Meili extension. For riders who want to continue to Kawagebo and Feilai Temple, Yaso Trip builds customised extensions on request — the only way to reach one of the world's most powerful mountain views from a cycling route.
Ready to Ride Shangri-La to Lijiang?
The route delivers mountain scale, cultural depth, and a handful of moments — the gorge at first light from the upper road, the sun on Songzanlin's gold rooftops, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain appearing above the Lijiang basin — that justify the effort completely. Get in touch with Yaso Trip to arrange permits, logistics, and a customised itinerary.
FAQs
Expand All1. Is Tiger Leaping Gorge accessible by bike?
Yes, via the upper motor road (虎香公路), not the famous trekking trail. The cycling route follows the road above the gorge rim; the lower trekking trail is hiking-only. As of 2025–2026, some lower trekking sections have restricted access. The upper road and Tina's Hostel remain fully operational.
2. How difficult is cycling from Lijiang to Shangri-La?
The Lijiang to Shangri-La direction covers 260 km (162 miles) with three demanding climbing days, including the Washbasin Pass at approximately 3,750 m (12,303 ft) and cumulative gain of around 4,500 m (14,764 ft). Manageable for fit cyclists with mountain experience, but not to be underestimated.
3. What is the altitude of Shangri-La, and how does it affect cycling?
Shangri-La sits at 3,280 m (10,761 ft). At this altitude, unacclimatised cyclists commonly experience reduced aerobic capacity and AMS symptoms (headache, nausea, poor sleep). The Yaso Trip tour includes two acclimatisation days before any riding begins. Do not fly from a low-altitude city and start cycling the same day.
4. Do foreign cyclists need special permits for Shangri-La or Yunnan?
No special permits are required for Yunnan Province or Diqing Prefecture — foreigners travel freely on a standard Chinese tourist visa. Continuing into Tibet requires both a Tibet Travel Permit and a border defense permit, with independent travel not permitted. Contact Yaso Trip for current Tibet entry requirements.
5. What is the best time of year to cycle this route?
April to May and September to October: mild temperatures (10–20°C / 50–68°F), clear skies, good road conditions. Avoid June to August (monsoon, landslide risk) and December to February (snow and potential closures at high passes).
6. Which direction is better — Lijiang to Shangri-La or Shangri-La to Lijiang?
For most riders, Shangri-La to Lijiang is the recommended direction: you begin acclimatised and the hardest mountain pass is a descent. Lijiang to Shangri-La is harder and better suited to experienced mountain cyclists. The Yaso Trip 9-day tour runs Shangri-La to Lijiang.
7. Can I extend the tour to see Meili Snow Mountain?
Yes. From Shangri-La, the G214 continues north to Deqin and Feilai Temple (飞来寺), the main viewpoint for Meili Snow Mountain (梅里雪山). The extension adds approximately 250 km (155 miles) with two significant mountain days including Baima Snow Mountain (白马雪山). Available as a customisable add-on through Yaso Trip.
