Panmen City Gate is a famous historical landmark in Suzhou, as well as the oldest city gate of Suzhou and the only existing water and land gate in China. The gate is located on the south-west corner of the Main Canal Suzhou.

History of Panmen City Gate

Panmen City Gate was originally built during the Spring and Autumn period in the state of Wu, historians estimate it to be around 2,500 years old. About 2,500 years ago, a moat canal surrounded Suzhou and provided for convenient transportation. But a wall was built to defend the city, and in order to defend the canal passage, a tower was built over the canal.

Main Attractions of Panmen City Gate

An important part of the Panmen Scenic Area, Panmen Gate is the only gate with both land and water in China. It is composed of two water passages, three land passages and the outside gate. On top of the gate, you can see the canons of the Qing Dynasty and a large stone that was once used to block the gate.

You can take 39, 47, 305, 935, 949 to get off at Panmen North Station. Or take tourist Buses No. 2 and 5 go there too. Get off at Pan Men Scenic Area north stop.
