Ningbo Transportation

Ningbo (宁波市) has one of the most comprehensive transport systems in Zhejiang Province, combining an international airport, high-speed railways, conventional trains, urban metro lines, intercity rail, expressways, ports, ferries, buses and cycling networks. Central Ningbo is easy to explore by metro and walking, while private cars or pre-arranged transfers are more practical for Dongqian Lake, mountain villages, coastal areas and attractions in Fenghua, Ninghai and Xiangshan.

The most important planning principle is to choose the correct arrival station. Ningbo Railway Station (宁波站) is best for the central city, Fenghua Railway Station (奉化站) for southern Fenghua, Ninghai Railway Station (宁海站) for Ninghai County and Yuyao North Railway Station (余姚北站) for northern Ningbo and Cixi. Travellers should not automatically choose Ningbo Railway Station when their final destination is located in an outer district or county.

How to Get to Ningbo

Arriving by Air

Ningbo Lishe International Airport (宁波栎社国际机场) is located in Haishu District, southwest of the central city. Its passenger terminal is directly connected with Metro Line 2, allowing travellers to reach Ningbo Railway Station, Drum Tower and other central districts without changing to a road vehicle. Airport buses, taxis and ride-hailing services are also available, including road connections to Yuyao, Cixi, Hangzhou Bay, Xiangshan and several nearby cities.

Metro is the most predictable option for passengers staying near the central rail network. A taxi or private transfer is preferable for travellers carrying substantial luggage or travelling directly to Dongqian Lake, Fenghua, Cixi, Beilun or another outer district.

International and domestic flight schedules change seasonally. Travellers arriving from destinations without a direct Ningbo flight can use Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (杭州萧山国际机场) or one of Shanghai’s airports and continue by high-speed rail or private vehicle.

Arriving by High-Speed Train

Ningbo Railway Station (宁波站) is the principal railway gateway and the best station for Tianyi Pavilion, Moon Lake, Drum Tower, Tianyi Square, Nantang Old Street and Old Bund. It is integrated with Metro Lines 2 and 4, city buses, taxis and the adjacent Ningbo South Coach Station.

Direct and connecting trains link Ningbo with Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Suzhou, Beijing, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Shenzhen and many other Chinese cities. For a first visit focused on central Ningbo, this is normally the correct station.

Fenghua Railway Station (奉化站) is useful for southern Ningbo and some Fenghua destinations. Travellers continuing to Xikou can transfer to local bus services or a taxi, although a direct tourist bus from central Ningbo may be more convenient when its timetable matches the planned visit.

Ninghai Railway Station (宁海站) is the gateway to Ninghai County. County buses, taxis and private transfers connect the station with Ninghai’s urban centre, Qiantong, hot-spring areas, ancient villages and mountain attractions.

Yuyao North Railway Station (余姚北站) serves high-speed trains and is convenient for northern Yuyao, Cixi and the Hangzhou Bay area. Yuyao Railway Station (余姚站) is located closer to central Yuyao and is served by conventional trains and Ningbo intercity services.

Ningbo–Yuyao Intercity Trains

Ningbo operates intercity trains linking Ningbo Railway Station, Yuyao, Shaoxing and Hangzhou South. They provide an alternative to high-speed rail for reaching Yuyao and selected cities along the Hangzhou–Ningbo corridor. Some longer intercity services require advance reservation, while ordinary Ningbo–Yuyao services generally operate under simpler arrangements. Timetables can change because the trains share national railway infrastructure, so passengers should check the current Ningbo intercity schedule before travelling.

Arriving by Long-Distance Coach

Ningbo South Coach Station (宁波汽车南站) stands beside Ningbo Railway Station and is the most useful road-passenger hub for visitors. Coaches and tourism services operate towards Xiangshan, Fenghua, Xikou and other regional destinations.

Coach travel is particularly important for Xiangshan because the county does not yet have an operating national passenger railway. It is also practical when a coach reaches a scenic area more directly than a combination of train and local transfers.

Departure points can change according to route adjustments. Confirm whether a service leaves from the South, East or another passenger terminal rather than relying only on the general phrase “Ningbo Bus Station.”

Arriving by Car

Ningbo is connected with Hangzhou, Shaoxing, Shanghai, Taizhou, Wenzhou and other cities through an extensive expressway network. The Hangzhou Bay Cross-Sea Bridge provides an important northern connection towards Jiaxing and Shanghai, while coastal and inland expressways link Ningbo with southern Zhejiang.

The urban expressway and ring-road systems are useful for bypassing central congestion. Drivers heading towards Xiangshan use the cross-sea road corridor across Xiangshan Harbour, while Fenghua, Ninghai and Yuyao are connected through separate expressway and national-highway corridors.

Holiday congestion is common around Dongqian Lake, Xikou, coastal resorts and popular mountain areas. Navigation software should be used together with official road signs because temporary one-way systems, shuttle requirements and parking controls may be introduced.

Arriving by Sea

Ningbo is a major maritime centre, but most port activity is commercial rather than tourist passenger transport. Ferry and vehicle-ferry services remain important between parts of Beilun and the Zhoushan Archipelago, particularly for residents and travellers visiting less accessible islands.

Visitors continuing to Putuoshan or central Zhoushan more commonly travel by bus or private vehicle through the Zhoushan Cross-Sea Bridge system and then transfer to the relevant island ferry. Ferry schedules are highly dependent on wind, fog, sea conditions and seasonal demand, so tickets and departure ports should be checked on the day before travel.

Ningbo Metro

Following the opening of Line 6 in January 2026, Ningbo’s operating urban rail network includes Lines 1 through 8. Line 6 runs between Gulin in Haishu and Honglian in Beilun, while Line 7, opened in August 2025, connects Yunlong, the Eastern New City, the Three-River area, Old Bund, Jiangbei and Zhenhai.

Line 2 is the most important line for arriving travellers because it connects Lishe International Airport with Ningbo Railway Station and the central city. Line 4 is the principal tourism line for Dongqian Lake and Cicheng. Lines 1, 2 and 7 are particularly useful around the historic centre, Tianyi commercial district and Old Bund.

Operating hours vary by line and station. Travellers making evening railway or flight connections should check the final train for the specific direction rather than relying on a general system-wide closing time.

Metro payment is available through compatible mobile transport codes, official applications and local transport cards. International visitors without access to a Chinese mobile-payment account can purchase single-journey tickets at station machines or seek assistance at the service counter.

City Buses and Tourism Services

Ningbo’s bus network reaches districts, towns and villages not directly served by metro. Urban routes are particularly useful around Dongqian Lake, Beilun, Fenghua and peripheral cultural sites, while county bus networks operate independently in Yuyao, Cixi, Ninghai and Xiangshan.

In 2025, tourism-oriented services were introduced from Ningbo Railway Station towards Dongqian Lake and Xikou–Xuedou Mountain. The Dongqian Lake sightseeing service links the station with central cultural areas and the lake, while the Maitreya Culture service connects the station with Xikou. These services can simplify a day trip, but departure times and seasonal operation should be reconfirmed.

Ordinary bus route numbers, intervals and last departures change more frequently than metro information. Use a current Chinese navigation application to check real-time arrivals and confirm the direction shown on the front of the bus.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis and app-based ride-hailing services are widely available around the airport, railway station, central districts, Dongqian Lake and county-level urban centres. They are often economical for two to four travellers making short transfers.

Availability decreases in mountain villages, remote coastal areas and smaller towns after dark. When travelling to a remote attraction, reserve the return journey or retain the driver instead of assuming another vehicle will be available.

At airports and railway stations, use the official taxi rank or place the ride-hailing order from the designated pickup zone. Drivers cannot always stop directly outside the nearest arrival exit.

Transport to Major Attractions

Tianyi Pavilion, Moon Lake and Drum Tower

The historic centre is best explored by metro and walking. Arrive through Ningbo Railway Station, Drum Tower or another nearby central station and complete the short distances on foot.

Driving is unnecessary and parking can be difficult during weekends. Travellers staying around Tianyi Square, Moon Lake or Drum Tower can visit most central cultural locations without using a private vehicle.

Ningbo Old Bund

Old Bund is accessible by metro, bus and taxi. Metro Line 7 strengthened direct access to the area in 2025, while Line 2 remains useful for nearby riverfront districts. Line 7 connects Old Bund with the Eastern New City, Jiangbei and Zhenhai.

Late-evening visitors should check the final metro departure. Ride-hailing is usually the easier option after restaurants and bars close.

Ningbo Museum

Ningbo Museum is in Yinzhou District and can be reached by metro followed by a short walk or taxi. Travellers should confirm whether the museum is open before setting out because temporary construction, exhibition changes and Monday closures can affect access.

Dongqian Lake

Take Metro Line 4 to Dongqian Lake Station and transfer at the transport hub outside the station. Local buses connect the station with several lake areas, including Xiaoputuo, Taolu and Hanling. During major holidays, special shuttles and temporary traffic controls may operate.

Dongqian Lake is too large to explore entirely on foot. Select one section and combine bus, taxi, sightseeing vehicle, walking or cycling. Travellers attempting a longer ride should check battery range or bicycle-return rules before leaving the station area.

Self-driving is convenient on ordinary weekdays but can become inefficient during holidays because lakeside roads and car parks fill quickly. Follow signs to the designated parking area rather than attempting to drive directly to every lakeside village.

Cicheng Ancient County Town

Cicheng is one of the easiest outer historic areas to visit by public transport. Metro Line 4 connects central Ningbo with Cicheng, after which the principal old-town streets can be explored on foot.

A bicycle or taxi is useful for combining the old town with surrounding countryside, reservoirs or villages.

Xikou and Xuedou Mountain

Visitors have several public-transport options. Buses 987 and 988 operate from the Ningbo Railway Station area towards Xikou, while passengers arriving at Fenghua Railway Station can use Bus 230 to reach the Xikou–Tengtou visitor centre. A tourism sightseeing service also operates from Ningbo Railway Station on selected schedules.

For Xuedou Mountain, passengers normally transfer to the official scenic transport system at the visitor centre. Private vehicles may not be allowed to continue through all internal mountain sections.

Self-driving is the most flexible option for travellers combining Xikou with rural Fenghua, but parking and scenic traffic controls should be expected on holidays.

Hemudu Archaeological Area

The Hemudu area is in rural Yuyao. Public transport from central Yuyao is possible but generally involves a local bus or taxi after arriving at Yuyao Station.

A private vehicle or pre-arranged transfer is recommended for international groups, families and travellers combining Hemudu with other archaeological or cultural sites in Yuyao.

Central Yuyao and Wang Yangming Cultural Sites

Use Yuyao Railway Station for central-city destinations. The Ningbo–Yuyao intercity train is a convenient alternative to driving, although its timetable is less frequent than an urban metro service.

Yuyao North Station is more suitable for high-speed rail passengers but requires a road transfer into the old city.

Cixi and Hangzhou Bay

Travellers commonly arrive through Yuyao North Railway Station and continue by bus, taxi or private vehicle. Cixi’s attractions, industrial areas and Hangzhou Bay destinations are spread across a broad east–west area, making a private vehicle more efficient for several stops.

Travellers visiting Hangzhou Bay should confirm the precise destination because “Cixi,” “Hangzhou Bay New Area” and individual wetland or industrial locations can be far apart.

China Port Museum and Beilun

Beilun is connected with central Ningbo by Metro Lines 1 and 6, but the China Port Museum and some coastal locations require an additional bus or taxi transfer.

Operational container terminals are controlled industrial facilities and cannot be entered as ordinary tourist attractions. Approved educational or business visits require advance registration and safety arrangements.

Zhenhai and Jiulong Lake

Central Zhenhai is accessible by metro, especially through Lines 2, 5 and 7. Jiulong Lake and surrounding rural areas are outside the main metro corridor and require a local bus, taxi or car.

A private vehicle is useful when combining Zhenhai’s urban heritage with lakes, villages and mountain areas.

Qiantong Ancient Town and Ninghai Countryside

Take a high-speed train to Ninghai Railway Station and continue by county bus, taxi or private transfer. Qiantong and many Ninghai villages lie outside the county’s main urban area.

Return ride-hailing vehicles can be difficult to obtain in isolated locations. Arrange the return journey before beginning the visit.

Ninghai Hot-Spring and Mountain Areas

Hot-spring resorts and mountain destinations are dispersed north and west of Ninghai’s urban centre. Some hotels provide station transfers, but these normally require advance booking.

Self-driving or a private vehicle is the most practical arrangement when combining hot springs, hiking and ancient villages.

Songlan Mountain Coastal Resort

A direct road service has operated between Ningbo South Coach Station and the Songlan Mountain area. Another option is to take a coach to Xiangshan Passenger Transport Centre and transfer to a local tourism bus. Current times should be confirmed with the resort or passenger station because seasonal schedules can change.

Self-driving is convenient for an overnight coastal holiday, but parking restrictions and internal shuttles may apply during peak summer weekends.

Shipu Fishing Port

Coaches connect Ningbo with Xiangshan, after which passengers transfer towards Shipu. Scenic direct services have also operated between Ningbo and combinations of Songlan Mountain and Shipu during peak travel periods.

Because Shipu is far from central Ningbo, it is better treated as a full-day or overnight destination. Private transport is especially useful when combining the fishing port with beaches, villages and other coastal areas.

Self-Driving in Ningbo

Self-driving is unnecessary for a central-city visit but highly valuable for Dongqian Lake, Fenghua, Yuyao, Cixi, Ninghai and Xiangshan. It is the most efficient choice for several rural attractions or a journey covering both mountain and coastal areas.

Ningbo’s main expressways and urban roads are generally well developed, but local conditions vary. Mountain roads in Siming Mountain, Fenghua and Ninghai can be narrow, steep and foggy, while coastal roads may be affected by wind, typhoons and holiday traffic.

Electronic parking systems are common in urban areas. Around historic streets, use an official car park and complete the final section on foot rather than searching for roadside parking.

Foreign visitors cannot drive in mainland China using only an overseas driving licence or an International Driving Permit. They must obtain a Chinese driving licence or an approved temporary driving permit. Short-term visitors holding an overseas licence may apply for a temporary permit, subject to the required documents and procedures.

Cycling in Ningbo

Ningbo offers urban bicycle lanes, riverfront paths, public bicycles, shared bicycles and rural cycling roads. Cycling is most practical in the central riverside districts, Dongqian Lake, Cicheng and selected coastal or countryside areas.

Dongqian Lake Cycling

Dongqian Lake is Ningbo’s best-known leisure-cycling area. Riders can arrive by Metro Line 4 and rent a bicycle or electric bicycle near the station or visitor centre.

The complete lake area is much larger than many first-time visitors expect. Select a manageable section, check the vehicle’s remaining battery and confirm where it must be returned. Avoid the busiest vehicle roads during holiday peaks.

Central Riverside Cycling

The riverfronts around the Three-River confluence, Jiangbei and Yinzhou provide relatively flat urban riding. These sections are suitable for casual cycling and can be combined with parks, Old Bund and modern waterfront districts.

Siming Mountain Cycling

The Siming Mountain region offers long climbs, rapid descents and rural scenery but is suitable only for experienced riders. Weather can change quickly and mobile reception may weaken in mountain valleys.

Carry lights, reflective equipment, drinking water, spare tubes and basic repair tools. Avoid mountain cycling during thunderstorms, typhoons, dense fog or freezing winter conditions.

Shared Bicycle Limitations

Shared bicycles are designed mainly for short urban journeys. Their permitted operating zones may not include rural attractions, and parking outside the approved area can result in additional charges or an inability to end the rental.

Motorcycle Travel

Motorcycle touring is possible on permitted national highways, provincial highways and local roads around Ningbo. Mountain roads in Yuyao, Fenghua and Ninghai can be attractive to experienced riders, while coastal roads provide access to fishing communities and sea views.

Motorcycles are prohibited from using expressways throughout Zhejiang Province. Navigation must therefore be set to avoid expressways, otherwise the suggested car route may lead to a prohibited entrance.

Riders must hold the correct Chinese motorcycle licence, registration and insurance. Overseas motorcycle licences and International Driving Permits cannot be used directly in mainland China.

Temporary restrictions may be introduced around crowded scenic areas, reservoir roads and mountain sections. Helmets are mandatory, and riding should be avoided during typhoons, heavy rain, fog or icy conditions.
