Ningbo (宁波) is a National Historical and Cultural City whose identity is often expressed through the phrase “A City of Ancient Books and a Port Connected to the World.” Its cultural development spans prehistoric coastal settlements, early rice-farming communities, the eastern terminus of the Grand Canal, Maritime Silk Road trade, Buddhist exchanges with East Asia, private book collecting, East Zhejiang scholarship, merchant networks and modern port industries. Ningbo was included in China’s second group of National Historical and Cultural Cities in 1986, and the Ningbo section of the Grand Canal became part of the UNESCO World Heritage property in 2014.
Ningbo’s heritage is not concentrated in one old town. Haishu preserves book culture and the historic city; Jiangbei contains the Old Bund, Cicheng and Baoguo Temple; Yinzhou combines Buddhist temples, Dongqian Lake villages and traditional crafts; Yuyao represents prehistoric civilization and East Zhejiang thought; Cixi preserves Yue-kiln celadon heritage; Fenghua combines Republican-era history, Maitreya Buddhism and mountain villages; Ninghai is known for ancient settlements and red-dowry marriage customs; while Xiangshan maintains one of China’s richest living marine-fishing cultures.
For international cultural travellers, Ningbo is particularly valuable because its story can be read as a continuous sequence: from the 8,000-year-old coastal life of Jingtoushan, to Hemudu rice culture, Tang–Song maritime trade, Ming-dynasty private libraries, Qing and Republican merchant history, and the contemporary global port.
Ningbo’s Six Core Cultural Traditions
Prehistoric Coastal and Rice-Farming Civilization
The archaeological story of Ningbo begins with Jingtoushan Site (井头山遗址) in Yuyao. Dating back approximately 8,000 years, it is an exceptionally early coastal shell-midden settlement and has produced marine shells, animal remains, pottery, tools and a wooden paddle. The site was selected as one of China’s Top Ten Archaeological Discoveries of 2020 and provides important evidence for the relationship between early communities, the sea and changing coastal environments.
The nearby Hemudu Site (河姆渡遗址) represents a developed Neolithic culture dating back about 7,000 years. Its discoveries—including rice remains, wooden structures, bone tools and pottery—helped establish that the lower Yangtze River region was another major centre in the formation of Chinese civilization. Together, Jingtoushan and Hemudu allow visitors to examine the transition from marine-resource gathering to wetland settlement, rice cultivation and complex village life.
Book Collecting and Literary Culture
Tianyi Pavilion (天一阁) is Ningbo’s most recognisable cultural landmark. Founded by Ming-dynasty official and collector Fan Qin, it represents the survival of private book collecting, family scholarship and traditional methods of preserving books in the humid Jiangnan climate.
The influence of Tianyi Pavilion extended beyond one family collection. When the Qing court compiled the Complete Library of the Four Branches of Literature, the Fan family contributed hundreds of book titles, and the design of the imperial library buildings drew upon the architectural principles of Tianyi Pavilion.
Book culture remains a living form of heritage. Tianyi Pavilion Ancient Book Restoration Techniques (天一阁古籍修复技艺) entered the national intangible-cultural-heritage list in 2021, and a representative practitioner was included in the sixth group of national-level inheritors in 2025. The tradition includes paper analysis, cleaning, patching, reinforcement, binding and restoration methods adapted to fragile Chinese books.
Maritime Silk Road and Grand Canal Culture
Ningbo developed where inland waterways met the East China Sea. The eastern Zhejiang section of the Grand Canal connected the port with the Yangtze River Delta and inland China, while seagoing routes linked it with Japan, the Korean Peninsula, Southeast Asia and other maritime regions.
The Ningbo section forms the southern maritime outlet of the Grand Canal World Heritage system. Protected components include sections of the Eastern Zhejiang Canal and related watercourses and heritage points in Yuyao and central Ningbo.
The strongest places for understanding this history are Qing’an Guild Hall (庆安会馆), the Old Bund, the Three-River Confluence, China Port Museum, Zhaobao Mountain and the ancient harbour areas around Shipu. Ningbo’s cultural authorities describe the city as a birthplace of Hemudu culture, a source area of Chinese marine civilization, the seaward end of the Grand Canal and an important departure point of the Maritime Silk Road.
East Zhejiang Scholarship and “Knowledge through Practice”
The intellectual traditions of Ningbo and surrounding eastern Zhejiang are associated with thinkers such as Wang Yangming (王阳明), Huang Zongxi (黄宗羲), Quan Zuwang (全祖望), Wan Sitong (万斯同) and Zhang Xuecheng (章学诚).
The tradition is commonly linked with practical scholarship, historical research, moral self-cultivation and engagement with society. Broad summaries of East Zhejiang learning emphasise ideas including “the unity of knowledge and action,” practical application, moral responsibility and intellectual openness.
Yuyao is the principal destination for this theme. Travellers can visit Wang Yangming’s Former Residence (王阳明故居), Yangming Ancient Town and cultural venues connected with Huang Zongxi and the East Zhejiang intellectual tradition. This theme works particularly well for university, philosophy, history and leadership groups.
Buddhist and East Asian Cultural Exchange
Ningbo has long been an important centre of Chinese Buddhism and cultural exchange with Japan. Tiantong Temple (天童寺) influenced the transmission of Chan and Zen traditions, while Ayuwang Temple (阿育王寺) became famous for Buddhist relic worship.
In Fenghua, Xuedou Mountain (雪窦山) is associated with Maitreya Buddhism. Xuedou Temple, the open-air Maitreya statue and surrounding monastic institutions form a major religious and educational landscape. Ningbo’s cultural-tourism planning promotes a Maitreya pilgrimage sequence connecting Xuedou Temple with other Buddhist sites in Fenghua.
Historic Buddhist architecture also preserves traditional craft traditions. Zhu-jin lacquered woodcarving, painted sculpture, gilding and timber construction can be studied at temples and through specialised craft centres.
Ningbo Merchant Culture and Global Migration
From the late imperial period into modern times, Ningbo merchants developed trading, shipping, banking, manufacturing and professional networks in Shanghai, Hong Kong and overseas communities. The term Ningbo Gang (宁波帮) refers not only to commercial success but also to philanthropy, education, social organisations and investment in hometown development.
This culture can be explored through the Ningbo Gang Museum (宁波帮博物馆) in Zhenhai, the Old Bund, former guild halls, merchant residences in Cicheng and the commercial heritage of the Three-River Confluence.
Ningbo’s modern openness is therefore not disconnected from its ancient port history. Maritime transport, migration, education and entrepreneurship repeatedly reinforced one another throughout the city’s development.
Historical and Cultural Resources by District and County
Haishu District: Books, the Old City and Scholarly Life
Haishu District (海曙区) contains the cultural heart of historic Ningbo. Tianyi Pavilion–Moon Lake, Drum Tower, Tianfeng Pagoda, the City God Temple, the old prefectural-city streets and surviving historic neighbourhoods form the strongest central cultural route.
Moon Lake was historically surrounded by scholars’ residences, academies, temples, gardens and official institutions. The area also contains sites connected with diplomatic and maritime exchanges, including remains associated with historical Korean missions.
Xiushui Street (秀水街) and Yujiaxiang Historical and Cultural District (郁家巷历史文化街区) preserve residences, ancestral halls, high-walled courtyards and cultural associations connected with Ningbo collectors, poets, merchants and intellectuals. The official conservation plan describes Yujiaxiang as an important link between Moon Lake, the City God Temple–Tianfeng Pagoda area and other historic districts.
Main cultural experiences: ancient-book culture, seal and rubbing workshops, city-history walks, traditional architecture, Ningbo cuisine and museum cultural products.
Jiangbei District: Port Opening, County Administration and Architecture
Jiangbei District (江北区) contains three very different cultural landscapes.
Ningbo Old Bund (宁波老外滩) preserves the modern port environment through former consular, customs, commercial, religious and warehouse buildings. It is best interpreted as a historic harbour district rather than simply a nightlife street.
Cicheng Ancient County Town (慈城古县城) retains the structure of a traditional county administrative centre. Its county office, Confucian temple, examination hall, residences and lanes support study themes in imperial administration, Confucian education and local clan society.
Baoguo Temple Ancient Architecture Museum (保国寺古建筑博物馆) is one of the most important places in eastern China for understanding historic timber structures. Its construction systems, brackets, roof forms and conservation work make it particularly suitable for architecture and engineering students.
Main cultural experiences: ancient administration, imperial examinations, timber-architecture study, modern port history and old-city photography.
Zhenhai District: Coastal Defence and Ningbo Merchant Networks
Zhenhai District (镇海区) guards the mouth of the Yong River and historically played an important role in maritime transport and coastal defence.
Zhaobao Mountain (招宝山) preserves defensive structures, forts and strategic views of the estuary. Its cultural interpretation connects maritime trade with military protection and coastal security.
The Ningbo Gang Museum presents the development of Ningbo merchants, their migration to Shanghai and overseas regions, their business networks and their contributions to education and public welfare.
Zheng Family’s Seventeen Houses (郑氏十七房) preserves an extensive clan-residential complex illustrating kinship organisation, domestic architecture and the economic life of prosperous rural families.
Main cultural experiences: maritime defence, merchant history, clan architecture and port-city development.
Beilun District: Port Civilization and Maritime Archaeology
Beilun District (北仑区) is the modern face of Ningbo’s port culture. The China Port Museum (中国港口博物馆) introduces port history, navigation, maritime trade, underwater archaeology and the development of contemporary harbours.
The area is particularly useful for connecting historical Maritime Silk Road studies with modern container shipping, logistics and industrial development. Student and professional groups can compare ancient ship routes and port technologies with the infrastructure of the present Ningbo-Zhoushan Port.
Main cultural experiences: port museums, maritime archaeology, logistics education, coastal industrial landscapes and modern engineering.
Yinzhou District: Buddhism, Dongqian Lake and Craft Heritage
Yinzhou District (鄞州区) contains one of Ningbo’s richest combinations of village culture, religious heritage and traditional crafts.
Tiantong Temple and Tiantong Village (天童寺、天童村) represent Buddhist history, old streets, charitable and filial traditions, farming culture and connections with Japan. Local customs include the Tiantong Wax Festival (天童镴会), a procession traditionally associated with community morality, family education and respect for elders.
Dongqian Lake (东钱湖) preserves lake-fishing traditions, ancestral halls, old settlements and cultural landscapes. Hanling, Taogongshan, Xiaoputuo and the Southern Song stone-carving sites reveal different layers of market-town, religious, fishing and elite burial culture.
Zoumatang Village (走马塘村) is a recognised Chinese Traditional Village noted for its scholarly and examination history. Local records describe it as a village that produced an unusually large number of degree holders and officials.
Yinzhou is also an important centre for Zhu-jin lacquered woodcarving, bone-and-wood inlay, gold-and-silver embroidery, bamboo work and traditional restoration crafts. A local intangible-heritage centre has presented more than 20 crafts through demonstrations, training and hands-on activities.
Main cultural experiences: Buddhist studies, lake villages, traditional handicrafts, stone carving, ancestral architecture and craft workshops.
Fenghua District: Xikou, Maitreya Buddhism and Mountain Villages
Fenghua District (奉化区) has three major cultural identities.
Xikou (溪口) preserves Republican-era residences, schools, streets and public buildings associated with the Chiang family and twentieth-century Chinese history. These sites should be interpreted within their historical period rather than as ordinary celebrity residences.
Xuedou Mountain forms the centre of Maitreya Buddhist culture, combining temples, academies, statues, waterfalls and mountain landscapes.
Fenghua also contains important traditional villages. Qingyun Village (青云村) is a Chinese Traditional Village and Zhejiang historical-cultural village with a history of more than a millennium and surviving remains of private book-collecting traditions.
Yinjiakeng Village (印家坑村) in Shangtian is commonly introduced as Ningbo’s only She-concentrated village. A small Lan-clan She community has lived there for generations, and local cultural displays present clothing, agricultural tools and community history. Because this remains a living village rather than a staged ethnic park, activities should be arranged through community representatives.
Main cultural experiences: Republican history, Buddhist culture, ancient villages, She cultural exchange and rural education.
Yuyao City: Eight-Thousand-Year Civilization and East Zhejiang Thought
Yuyao City (余姚市) provides Ningbo’s deepest archaeological and philosophical route.
The Jingtoushan and Hemudu sites form the prehistoric core. A well-designed educational visit should compare food resources, house construction, tools, environmental conditions and settlement patterns at the two sites.
Wang Yangming’s Former Residence, Yangming Ancient Town and associated exhibitions introduce the philosopher’s life and his doctrine of the unity of knowledge and action. Sites connected with Huang Zongxi and other scholars broaden the route into the study of history, politics and ethical responsibility.
The Siming Mountains also preserve revolutionary sites, old transport routes, mountain settlements and the regional culture of bamboo, tea and forest agriculture.
Main cultural experiences: archaeology, rice civilization, philosophy, revolutionary history, mountain villages and ancient routes.
Cixi City: Yue Kilns, Medicine and Canal-Town Life
Cixi City (慈溪市) is one of the principal destinations for studying Chinese celadon.
The Shanglin Lake Yue Kiln Sites (上林湖越窑遗址) preserve the remains of a major kiln system that produced Yue ware over many centuries. Archaeological remains, kiln technology, clay selection, firing and distribution allow students to study both ceramic art and the economic networks that carried ceramics through ports such as Ningbo.
Minghe Ancient Town (鸣鹤古镇) is associated with medicine, merchant families, canals, old residences and temple culture. Its old pharmacies and local food traditions distinguish it from towns centred mainly on tourism retail.
Main cultural experiences: ceramic archaeology, celadon workshops, traditional medicine, old-town architecture and water-transport culture.
Ninghai County: Ancient Villages, Xu Xiake and Red-Dowry Culture
Ninghai County (宁海县) is one of Ningbo’s strongest centres of traditional rural culture.
Qiantong Ancient Town (前童古镇) preserves a clan-based settlement with waterways, ancestral halls, old residences and Confucian traditions. Its Lantern Festival customs and communal meals create particularly strong festival experiences when publicly scheduled.
Ninghai Ten-Mile Red Dowry Marriage Customs (宁海十里红妆婚俗) are recognised as national intangible cultural heritage. They encompass courtship and wedding rituals, bridal furniture, decorated beds, sedan chairs, embroidered textiles and other objects created for marriage. The tradition reflects both Jiangnan family customs and the high level of regional wood, lacquer and textile craftsmanship.
The Shili Hongzhuang Culture Park (十里红妆文化园) presents historic furniture, wedding objects and domestic crafts through themed exhibitions.
Ninghai is also associated with Xu Xiake (徐霞客), whose famous travels began from this region. Ancient paths and annual travel-culture activities connect historical geography with modern hiking.
Traditional villages such as Ru’ao Village (箬岙村) and stone settlements such as Xujiashan preserve rural architecture, clan culture, coastal defence memories and agricultural life.
Main cultural experiences: traditional weddings, lacquer crafts, clan settlements, historic paths, calligraphy and village workshops.
Xiangshan County: Living Marine-Fishing Culture
Xiangshan County (象山县) preserves Ningbo’s most distinctive living maritime folklore.
The Marine Fishing Culture Ecological Protection Area of Xiangshan became a national cultural-ecology protection area after passing Ministry of Culture and Tourism assessment in 2019. Its heritage includes boatbuilding, net weaving, fishing tools, fishing food, harbour commerce, religious beliefs, chants, legends, songs, drums, lanterns and community organisations.
Shipu Fishing Port Ancient Town (石浦渔港古城) presents the architecture and commercial life of an old harbour. Nearby Dongmen Fishing Village (东门渔村) is a traditional settlement where harbour life, fishing boats, beliefs and community customs remain visible.
Nationally recognised customs include the Opening-the-Sea and Thanking-the-Sea Festivals (渔民开洋、谢洋节), ceremonies held before departure and after the safe return of fishing boats. They express hopes for safety and harvest and gratitude for the sea.
Xiangshan Fishermen’s Chants (象山渔民号子) developed through collective work at sea. Fish lanterns, fish printing, straw art, bamboo-root carving and other crafts are also presented through local heritage centres and community workshops.
Main cultural experiences: fishing-port history, sea rituals, fish printing, lantern making, seafood customs, boat culture and maritime festivals.

Traditional Villages and Historic Rural Settlements
Ningbo has a large network of protected historical villages and traditional settlements. A recent planning study recorded dozens of municipal historical-cultural villages, alongside settlements included in the national Chinese Traditional Village system.
Li Family Village in the Siming Mountains
Lijiakeng Village (李家坑村) in Haishu preserves one of the largest and most complete ancient settlements in the district’s Siming Mountain area. Its houses, ancestral traditions and farming culture are associated with more than five centuries of village history.
Zoumatang Village
Zoumatang (走马塘村) in Yinzhou is known for its historic examination culture, traditional waterways, bridges and clan residences. It entered the Chinese Traditional Village list in 2014.
Qingyun Village
Qingyun Village (青云村) in Fenghua preserves old lanes, residential compounds and remains linked with private book collecting. It is both a Chinese Traditional Village and a Zhejiang historical-cultural village.
Dongmen Fishing Village
Dongmen Fishing Village (东门渔村) in Xiangshan represents a living maritime settlement rather than a restored inland ancient town. Boats, harbour buildings, temples, fishing beliefs and seasonal customs remain part of community life.
Tiantong Village
Tiantong Village (天童村) developed beside Tiantong Temple. Its cultural identity combines Chan Buddhism, old streets, farming, charitable traditions, storytelling and community festivals.
Ru’ao Village
Ru’ao Village (箬岙村) in Ninghai preserves more than six centuries of settlement history, clan buildings, educational traditions and memories connected with coastal defence. Contemporary cultural spaces have been introduced into selected old buildings.
Xujiashan Stone Village
Xujiashan Village (许家山村) preserves an extensive stone-built settlement. It stands along the historic Ninghai–Xiangshan route, one of numerous Ningbo ancient paths recognised within Zhejiang’s graded historic-trail system.
Zheng Family’s Seventeen Houses
Although now presented as a heritage attraction, Zheng Family’s Seventeen Houses originated as a living clan settlement and remains an important example of large-scale residential architecture in eastern Zhejiang.
Minority Culture in Ningbo
Ningbo’s minority communities are mainly dispersed through urban neighbourhoods, schools, factories and commercial areas rather than concentrated in autonomous administrative units. For cultural tourism, the principal rural minority destination is Yinjiakeng Village in Fenghua.
The village’s Lan-clan families maintain She ancestry, while local cultural displays introduce clothing, farming implements, migration history and community traditions. The She “March Third” Festival (畲族三月三) and Double Ninth traditions may be presented through community programmes, but they are not guaranteed annual tourism performances.
A responsible visit should focus on exchange rather than spectacle. Workshops, meals or cultural presentations should be arranged with local hosts, and visitors should avoid treating personal clothing, homes or religious customs as unrestricted photo props.
Urban Ningbo also holds multicultural community events under ethnic-unity and public-cultural programmes. These are generally local community activities rather than fixed commercial festivals and should be confirmed individually.

Cultural Study Activities
Ancient-Book Restoration
A specialist session can introduce traditional paper, insect and moisture damage, stitching, patching and preservation. Because original-book restoration is professional conservation work, student activities normally use training materials rather than genuine historic volumes.
Ningbo Craft Workshop
Suitable activities include simplified bone-and-wood inlay, lacquer decoration, embroidery, bamboo work, rubbing, seal carving and lantern making. Sessions should explain materials and cultural use before the practical activity.
Archaeological Learning
At Hemudu or related educational facilities, students can compare objects, reconstruct house structures, examine rice cultivation and discuss how archaeologists interpret ancient environments.
Fish Printing and Fishing-Lantern Making
Xiangshan workshops may use real or model fish to create printed images, or guide students through the structure and decoration of fishing lanterns. Heritage practitioners or approved community educators should lead the activity.
Celadon Study
A Cixi programme can combine Shanglin Lake kiln archaeology with clay preparation, vessel design, glazing and firing. Kiln-site access and firing experiences must be booked separately.
Traditional Music and Opera
A curated presentation can introduce Siming Nanci, Ningbo storytelling and Yong Opera. A short explanatory performance is generally more accessible to international students than an untranslated full traditional programme. Ningbo’s local performance traditions include Siming Nanci, Ningbo Zou Shu, Pinghua and regional opera.
Practical Cultural Travel Guide
Reserve Museums and Specialist Visits
Tianyi Pavilion, Ningbo Museum and other major institutions may require real-name reservations. Schools, restoration studios, archaeological work areas and craft inheritors require additional approval and should never be advertised as confirmed before written acceptance.
Separate Active Religion from Tourist Performance
Tiantong Temple, Ayuwang Temple and Xuedou Temple are functioning religious institutions. Visitors should dress respectfully, speak quietly, follow photography rules and avoid interrupting worship.
Confirm Festival Dates
The Opening-the-Sea Festival, Tiantong Wax Festival, Qiantong Lantern Festival and She March Third follow seasonal, lunar or community calendars. Programmes can change each year and may contain ceremonies not open to unrestricted tourist participation.
Protect Traditional Villages
Traditional villages are residential communities. Keep noise low, do not enter houses without permission and avoid blocking narrow streets with vehicles or photography equipment.
Choose One Geographic Area per Day
Cicheng, Yuyao, Ninghai, Xiangshan and Xikou are separate cultural zones. Combining several outer counties in one day weakens the educational experience and creates excessive road travel.
Use Bilingual Interpretation
Literal translation is often insufficient for concepts such as ancestral halls, imperial examinations, Maitreya belief, clan settlements, filial ethics and the unity of knowledge and action. International groups benefit from an English-speaking guide supported by museum educators or subject specialists.
Avoid Over-Commercialising Intangible Heritage
A meaningful non-heritage experience explains the practitioner, materials, social context and transmission process. A quick souvenir-making session without interpretation should not be presented as a complete study of intangible cultural heritage.
