Zhaotong City (昭通市) lies at the junction of Yunnan, Sichuan, and Guizhou provinces and has historically been described as a strategic gateway between southern Yunnan and western Sichuan. Dashanbao Scenic Area (大山包景区) is one of Zhaotong’s most representative natural destinations. Located at high elevation in Zhaoyang District, it combines alpine wetlands, grasslands, canyon scenery, seasonal cloud seas, and important wildlife habitats.

The area is particularly famous as a wintering habitat for black-necked cranes, making it one of Yunnan’s important destinations for birdwatching and ecological photography. During the colder months, visitors can observe cranes feeding and resting in the wetlands from designated viewing areas.

Another major landscape is the Jigongshan canyon area, where dramatic relief creates impressive cliff and valley views. Weather changes quickly at this elevation, so warm and windproof clothing is essential throughout much of the year.

Zhaotong Old Town

Zhaotong Old Town (昭通古城) represents the historical and cultural heart of the city. Its streets preserve traces of commercial exchanges between Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, and other regions, reflected in former guild halls, ancestral buildings, traditional courtyards, and historic residences.

Zhaxi Red Town

Zhaxi Red Town (扎西红色小镇) in Weixin County is one of Zhaotong’s most important revolutionary heritage destinations. It is associated with the Zhaxi Conference of 1935, an important episode during the Long March.

The area includes memorial architecture, historical exhibition spaces, and sites related to Red Army activities. It is especially suitable for history tours, educational travel, and visitors interested in modern Chinese history.

Xiaocaoba Eco-Tourism Area

Xiaocaoba Eco-Tourism Area (小草坝生态旅游区) in Yiliang County is known for dense forests, streams, waterfalls, mountain vegetation, and the local cultivation and cultural significance of Gastrodia.

Summer offers cool forest conditions, while autumn is particularly attractive when foliage changes color. The combination of waterfalls, forest trails, and mountain air makes Xiaocaoba one of Zhaotong’s strongest ecological leisure destinations.

Shanhai Cave Scenic Area

Shanhai Cave Scenic Area (山海洞景区) in Daguan County is a karst cave attraction featuring underground chambers, rock formations, and subterranean waterways.

The cave environment provides a strong contrast to Zhaotong’s open mountain landscapes and is suitable for family travel, geological sightseeing, and rainy-day itineraries.

Huanglian River Scenic Area

Huanglian River Scenic Area (黄连河景区) is one of the best waterfall destinations in northeastern Yunnan. Numerous waterfalls are distributed through a forested valley, creating a cool, humid microclimate and rich vegetation.

The area is particularly rewarding during wetter months when streams and waterfalls carry more water, though visitors should wear shoes with good grip because paths can become slippery.

Doushaguan Pass

Doushaguan Pass (豆沙关) in Yanjin County is one of Zhaotong’s most important historical transport landscapes.

Its cultural significance comes from the concentration of multiple transportation layers within the same narrow canyon: traces of the ancient Wuchi Road, later roads, modern highways, railways, and waterways all demonstrate the continuing strategic importance of this passage.

Shaonvping Tourist Town

Shaonvping Tourist Town (邵女坪旅游小镇) in Shuifu City overlooks the reservoir landscape associated with the Xiangjiaba area.

Its appeal centers on waterfront leisure, lake scenery, water activities, local food, and seasonal cultural events. It works well for family travel and relaxed stays rather than intensive sightseeing.

Yaoshan Mountain

Yaoshan Mountain (药山) in Qiaojia County rises above the surrounding Jinsha River region and is known for high-mountain ecosystems, medicinal plants, forest vegetation, and protected natural habitats.

The area is more suitable for experienced nature travelers and ecological observation than casual sightseeing, especially because mountain weather and access conditions can vary significantly.
