Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, CAS
Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences (中国科学院西双版纳热带植物园) in Mengla County is the prefecture’s most important botanical attraction and one of China’s leading tropical plant research centers.
The garden contains an enormous collection of tropical and subtropical plants arranged across numerous specialized gardens. Visitors can see palms, aquatic plants, orchids, rainforest species, medicinal plants, rare trees, and unusual tropical flowers.
Beyond ordinary sightseeing, the garden is particularly valuable for botanical study tours, family education, biodiversity research, photography, and nature interpretation. Because of its size, visitors should allow at least half a day, while plant enthusiasts may prefer a full day.
Gaozhuang Xishuangjing
Gaozhuang Xishuangjing (告庄西双景) is the best-known urban tourism district in Jinghong and one of the strongest nightlife destinations in southern Yunnan.
Its architecture draws heavily on Dai and mainland Southeast Asian design. The district includes hotels, restaurants, cafés, cultural venues, shops, travel photography studios, the Great Golden Tower, the floating market, and the famous Starlight Night Market.
The area becomes most lively after sunset and is an excellent base for travelers who want convenient access to dining and evening entertainment.
Starlight Night Market
The Starlight Night Market (星光夜市) is the center of Gaozhuang’s evening atmosphere. It combines food stalls, tropical fruit, handicrafts, clothing, souvenirs, drinks, live entertainment, and travel photography.
The market is colorful and highly commercial, but it remains one of the easiest places for first-time visitors to experience the multicultural, Southeast Asian atmosphere of modern Xishuangbanna.
Wild Elephant Valley
Wild Elephant Valley (野象谷) is one of China’s best-known destinations for Asian elephant conservation and rainforest ecology.
The surrounding forest forms part of the habitat used by wild Asian elephants, while elevated walkways and observation facilities allow visitors to explore the forest with less disturbance to wildlife.
Wild elephant sightings cannot be guaranteed. The attraction is best understood as a wildlife conservation and rainforest education destination, rather than a place where close encounters are certain.
Manting Park
Manting Park (曼听公园) in Jinghong has a history of more than a thousand years and is traditionally associated with the former garden of the Dai royal family.
The park combines tropical vegetation, lakes, Dai-style architecture, Buddhist structures, ceremonial spaces, and cultural performances. It is one of the best places for first-time visitors to gain an introduction to the relationship between Dai royal history, Theravada Buddhism, architecture, and garden culture.
The nearby General Buddhist Temple can easily be visited together with the park.
Xishuangbanna General Buddhist Temple
Xishuangbanna General Buddhist Temple (西双版纳总佛寺) is one of the most important Theravada Buddhist centers in the region.
Golden stupas, traditional halls, monastic spaces, and religious ceremonies reflect the close connection between Buddhism and Dai society. Visitors should wear appropriate clothing, remain quiet, and follow on-site photography rules.
Wangtianshu Scenic Area
Wangtianshu Scenic Area (望天树景区) in Mengla County provides one of Xishuangbanna’s strongest immersive rainforest experiences.
The area is known for towering tropical trees, dense rainforest vegetation, elevated canopy walkways, and the nearby Nanla River. Visitors can experience the rainforest from ground level, from the water, and from elevated walkways among the trees.
It is particularly suitable for nature lovers who want something more immersive than an urban botanical garden.
Xishuangbanna Dai Ethnic Garden
Xishuangbanna Dai Ethnic Garden (西双版纳傣族园) consists of several long-established Dai villages in the Ganlanba area.
Traditional stilt houses, Buddhist temples, tropical gardens, village lanes, weaving, food, music, and water-splashing activities create one of the most accessible introductions to living Dai culture.
The villages are still inhabited, so visitors should remember that they are not merely stage sets. Respect private homes and ask permission before photographing residents.
Xishuangbanna Primeval Forest Park
Xishuangbanna Primeval Forest Park (西双版纳原始森林公园) is one of the closest rainforest-style attractions to Jinghong.
The park combines forest scenery, walking routes, peacock-themed displays, ethnic cultural performances, and recreational activities. It is especially suitable for families and travelers who want an easy half-day rainforest experience.
Mengle Cultural Tourism Area
Mengle Cultural Tourism Area (勐泐文化旅游区) is one of Jinghong’s principal Theravada Buddhist cultural attractions.
Its giant Buddha, temple complex, stupas, ceremonial architecture, and hillside location make it an important religious and panoramic destination. Elevated areas also provide wide views across Jinghong and the surrounding tropical landscape.
Xishuangbanna Tropical Flower Garden
Xishuangbanna Tropical Flower Garden (西双版纳热带花卉园) combines tourism, scientific research, and tropical plant conservation.
It is particularly suitable for visitors who have limited time but still want to see a wide range of tropical flowers and economically important plants without traveling far from central Jinghong.
Jinuo Mountain Village
Jinuo Mountain Village (基诺山寨) introduces the history and living traditions of the Jinuo people.
Visitors can learn about traditional clothing, music, agricultural practices, houses, food, forest culture, and community customs. The experience is different from Dai cultural sites and adds another layer to Xishuangbanna’s ethnic diversity.
Mengjinglai Scenic Area
Mengjinglai Scenic Area (勐景来景区) in Menghai County is a well-known Dai border village near Myanmar.
Traditional architecture, temples, agricultural landscapes, handicrafts, village life, and border geography make it one of Menghai’s strongest ethnic-cultural destinations.
It is especially suitable for travelers who want a quieter village experience beyond central Jinghong.
Dayi Manor
Dayi Manor (大益庄园) in Menghai County is closely associated with the region’s renowned Pu’er tea culture.
Visitors can explore tea gardens, learn about tea processing, understand the relationship between Menghai and historic Tea-Horse Road trade, and participate in tea tasting.
Menghai is one of the most important places in China for travelers interested in Pu’er tea production, ancient tea mountains, tea villages, and tea culture.
Mengyuan Wonderland
Mengyuan Wonderland (勐远仙境) in Mengla County combines tropical rainforest, karst caves, streams, hiking, outdoor activities, and wellness experiences.
It is particularly suitable for travelers who want more active rainforest exploration and a less urbanized environment.
Nanla River
Nanla River (南腊河) flows through the tropical forests of Mengla and is closely associated with the Wangtianshu area.
Boat trips provide a different perspective on the rainforest, with dense vegetation lining the riverbanks. The setting often feels far removed from the more developed attractions around Jinghong.

Best Areas for Rainforest Exploration
For the most comprehensive plant experience, choose Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden. For more immersive rainforest scenery, prioritize Wangtianshu and Mengyuan Wonderland. For an easier excursion from Jinghong, Primeval Forest Park is the most convenient.
Best Areas for Wildlife
Wild Elephant Valley is the most important wildlife-focused destination, particularly for Asian elephant ecology. Visitors interested in birds, insects, amphibians, and tropical biodiversity can also explore Mengla’s rainforest areas with qualified local nature guides.
Best Areas for Dai Culture
A strong cultural combination is Manting Park + General Buddhist Temple + Dai Ethnic Garden + Mengjinglai. This allows visitors to see royal heritage, Buddhism, village life, architecture, handicrafts, and border Dai culture.
Best Areas for Pu’er Tea Culture
Travelers interested in tea should spend more time in Menghai County, particularly around Nannuo Mountain, Hekai, Bulang Mountain, and Dayi-related tea sites.
Tea experiences can include ancient tea-tree walks, village visits, processing demonstrations, tasting sessions, and learning how local ethnic communities shaped the history of Pu’er tea.
Best Areas for Nightlife and Food
Jinghong, especially Gaozhuang Xishuangjing and Starlight Night Market, is the center of nightlife, dining, cafés, bars, tropical fruit, and travel photography.
For more authentic daytime food experiences, local markets and neighborhood restaurants outside the major tourism districts can provide a better sense of everyday Xishuangbanna cuisine.
How to Experience Xishuangbanna
For a first visit, allow at least 4–5 days. A balanced trip should include Jinghong for Dai and Buddhist culture, one major rainforest destination, the Tropical Botanical Garden, and either Menghai tea country or deeper Mengla rainforest areas.
Travelers with additional time can explore border villages, ancient tea mountains, traditional ethnic communities, nature reserves, and the China–Laos corridor.
Xishuangbanna is most rewarding when travelers combine its major dimensions rather than focusing on only one: tropical rainforest, rare wildlife, Dai Buddhism, ethnic villages, Pu’er tea culture, the Lancang–Mekong world, and tropical city life.
