Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture (红河哈尼族彝族自治州) is one of the most culturally and naturally diverse destinations in Yunnan Province. Known as the “Southern Yunnan Commercial Port” and the “Land of Cultural Heritage,” Honghe combines world-class agricultural landscapes, ancient towns, ethnic cultures, railway heritage and ecological scenery. The prefecture has more than 50 A-level tourist attractions, including numerous 4A scenic areas, and is home to the famous Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces (元阳哈尼梯田), a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

Honghe’s tourism identity can be summarized through three major cultural and landscape icons: the thousand-year-old Lin’an Ancient City, the century-old Yunnan–Vietnam Railway, and the thousand-year-old Hani Rice Terraces.

World Heritage Landscapes and Agricultural Culture

Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces (元阳哈尼梯田) are the most iconic landscape of Honghe and one of the greatest examples of traditional agricultural civilization in China. Created by generations of Hani people on the slopes of the Ailao Mountains, the terraces form a magnificent natural artwork combining forests, villages, terraces and rivers. From November to April, after the fields are filled with water, the terraces become giant mirrors reflecting the sky, making it the best season for photography.

Samaba Rice Terraces (撒玛坝梯田) in Honghe County are another spectacular terrace landscape, famous for their huge scale, with more than ten thousand acres of terraces and thousands of levels spreading across the mountains.

Ancient Cities and Historical Heritage

Jianshui Ancient City (建水古城) is one of the best-preserved historical towns in Yunnan and an important cultural center of southern Yunnan. The city preserves numerous Ming and Qing dynasty buildings, including Jianshui Confucian Temple (建水文庙), one of the largest Confucian temples in China, Zhu Family Garden (朱家花园), known as the “Grand View Garden of Southern Yunnan,” and the iconic Chaoyang Tower (朝阳楼).

Shiping Ancient City (石屏古城) and Honghe Horse Caravan Ancient City (红河马帮古城) also preserve traditional architecture, commercial history and the cultural memories of ancient trade routes.

Art Towns, Hot Springs and Leisure Tourism

Mile City (弥勒市) has become one of the most popular modern tourism destinations in Honghe. The city combines art, ecology and wellness tourism through attractions such as Dongfengyun Art Village (东风韵), famous for its red-brick artistic architecture, Taiping Lake Forest Town (太平湖森林小镇), Keyi Town (可邑小镇) featuring Yi ethnic culture, and Huquan Ecological Park (湖泉生态园) with hot spring resorts.

Mile has developed into an ideal destination for long-stay travelers seeking a slower lifestyle, combining cultural experiences, nature and health tourism.

Railway Heritage and Red Tourism

Bisezhai Railway Station (碧色寨) in Mengzi City is one of the most famous railway heritage sites in Yunnan. Built along the historic Yunnan–Vietnam Railway, the station preserves French-style architecture and tells the story of early modern transportation and international trade in southwest China.

Mengzi also preserves important modern historical sites such as the Former Site of the First CPC Yunnan Congress (中共云南一大会址) and the Former Site of Southwest Associated University Mengzi Branch (西南联大蒙自分校旧址).
