Shangri-La City (香格里拉市) is the capital of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (迪庆藏族自治州) and one of the most famous plateau destinations in China. In Tibetan language, Shangri-La means “the sun and moon in the heart”, representing an ideal homeland full of peace and beauty. The name became internationally known through British writer James Hilton’s novel Lost Horizon, which created the image of a mysterious paradise hidden among mountains.
Located on the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Shangri-La has an average elevation of around 3,300 meters and combines snow mountains, alpine grasslands, lakes, Tibetan villages, ancient towns and Buddhist monasteries. It is one of the best destinations in Yunnan for experiencing Tibetan culture, plateau scenery and outdoor adventures.
The tourism resources of Shangri-La can be summarized as “one ancient town, one monastery, one national park, one lake and one canyon”.
Ancient town and Tibetan culture: Dukezong Ancient Town (独克宗古城) has a history of more than 1,300 years and was an important stop on the ancient Tea Horse Road. Known as the “Moonlight City,” the town preserves traditional Tibetan architecture and is home to the world’s largest prayer wheel. Ganden Sumtseling Monastery (噶丹·松赞林寺) is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan and is often called the “Little Potala Palace” because of its magnificent golden-roofed buildings.
National parks and plateau lakes: Pudacuo National Park (普达措国家公园) is China’s first national park on the mainland and features alpine lakes, forests, wetlands and grasslands. Napahai Lake–Yila Grassland (纳帕海·依拉草原) is a seasonal plateau wetland that changes from a lake in summer to a grassland in winter and provides a habitat for rare birds such as black-necked cranes.
Snow mountains and canyon landscapes: Balagezong Grand Canyon (巴拉格宗大峡谷) combines snow mountains, deep valleys, rivers and ancient Tibetan villages and was once considered a hidden paradise. Surrounding Shangri-La are also famous mountains such as Shika Snow Mountain (石卡雪山) and Haba Snow Mountain (哈巴雪山), creating spectacular highland scenery together with grasslands and lakes.
