  • Baoshan Climate

Baoshan City (保山市) is located in western Yunnan along China's frontier with Myanmar. Historically known as Yongchang, the region has long served as a gateway on the ancient Southern Silk Road linking inland China with Myanmar, India and the wider South and Southeast Asian world. Today, Baoshan's tourism identity is built around the Gaoligong Mountains, volcanic and geothermal landscapes, hot springs, coffee plantations, ancient caravan routes, overseas-Chinese heritage, World War II sites and multi-ethnic villages.

Administratively, Baoshan governs 1 municipal district, 1 county-level city and 3 counties: Longyang District, Tengchong City, Shidian County, Longling County and Changning County. Current 2026 administrative records give the city 76 formal township-level divisions: 8 subdistricts, 36 towns and 32 townships, including 10 ethnic townships. Longyang has 6 subdistricts, 5 towns and 10 townships; Tengchong has 2 subdistricts, 12 towns and 5 townships; Shidian has 5 towns and 8 townships; Longling has 5 towns and 5 townships; and Changning has 9 towns and 4 townships.

Baoshan's tourism statistics have also changed since the 2024 figures commonly quoted online. The city's official 2026 investment guide records 112 national A-rated tourist attractions, including 2 national 5A attractions and 16 national 4A attractions, with the total number of A-rated attractions reported as the highest among Yunnan's prefecture-level regions. The two 5A attractions are both in Tengchong: Tengchong Volcano and Hot Sea Tourism Area and Heshun Ancient Town.

    Tourism Geography of Baoshan

Baoshan's tourism geography can be understood through five distinct destination zones. Longyang District is the urban gateway and center of Baoshan coffee culture; Tengchong City is the tourism powerhouse, combining volcanoes, hot springs, wetlands, ancient towns and wartime history; Shidian County is associated with Yang Shanzhou heritage, hot springs and the Nujiang valley; Longling County combines World War II battlefields, rare hot springs, Huanglong jade and Dendrobium culture; while Changning County is characterized by tea mountains, rural landscapes and hot-spring wellness.

The city government currently promotes Baoshan through three world-class resource themes—the Gaoligong Mountains, geothermal and hot-spring landscapes, and the historic Southern Silk Road corridor. Official 2026 information also records more than 240 naturally flowing hot springs across the municipality, while coffee, tea, Huanglong jade, Dendrobium and traditional handicrafts increasingly form part of the visitor economy.

Longyang District – Coffee, Wetlands and the Historic Yongchang Gateway

Longyang District (隆阳区) is Baoshan's municipal center and currently administers 6 subdistricts, 5 towns, 6 ordinary townships and 4 ethnic townships, totaling 21 township-level divisions. The district covers the main Baoshan urban area but also extends westward through the Gaoligong Mountains into the warm Nujiang valley.

Its two major national 4A attractions are Qinghuahai National Wetland Park and the Gaoligong International Specialty Coffee Cultural Park. Qinghuahai provides wetlands, bird habitat and urban ecological recreation, while the coffee park in Lujiang Town has become one of the most important centers of coffee-themed tourism in western Yunnan.

Lujiang Town – Baoshan Coffee Country

Lujiang Town is the heart of the famous Baoshan Arabica coffee region. The warm Nujiang valley beneath the Gaoligong Mountains creates a dramatic landscape of coffee terraces, tropical fruit, Dai villages and steep mountains. In 2026, local authorities were continuing to develop a coffee-tourism corridor connecting Xinzai Village, roadside specialty cafés and the Gaoligong International Specialty Coffee Cultural Park.

Xinzai Village itself has become one of the most recognizable rural coffee destinations around Baoshan. It is a national 3A attraction and has developed boutique coffee estates, roasting and brewing experiences, village cafés and wellness-oriented rural tourism.

Banqiao Town – Ancient Streets and Caravan Culture

Banqiao Town is one of Longyang's most important historical settlements. Its Qinglong Street preserves the atmosphere of an old commercial route associated with western Yunnan's caravan trade and has been recognized as a provincial tourism and leisure district. Together with nearby traditional villages and craft culture, it provides a historical contrast to the modern city center.

Jinji and the Rural Cultural Belt

Jinji Township is associated with traditional pottery and rural cultural experiences, while Wama, Wafang, Yangliu and Mangkuan ethnic townships introduce Yi, Bai, Miao and Dai cultural landscapes. The mountainous western part of Longyang also provides access toward Gaoligong Mountain ecology, birdwatching areas and traditional villages.

Tengchong City – Volcanoes, Hot Springs and Heshun Ancient Town

Tengchong City (腾冲市) is Baoshan's leading international tourism destination. Its current government profile confirms 2 subdistricts, 12 towns and 5 townships, totaling 19 township-level divisions. Tengchong borders Myanmar and combines volcanic geology, hot springs, forests, ancient villages, overseas-Chinese history and major World War II heritage.

Tengchong is also exceptional within Yunnan because it has two national 5A attractions. Heshun Ancient Town was upgraded to national 5A status in 2024, joining the long-established Volcano and Hot Sea Tourism Area. Current Tengchong government material describes it as the only county-level jurisdiction in Yunnan with two 5A attractions.

Heshun Town – Ancient Town and Overseas-Chinese Heritage

Heshun Ancient Town is one of western Yunnan's best-preserved historic settlements. Traditional courtyards, ancestral halls, stone lanes, ponds, old libraries and merchant residences preserve the legacy of generations of residents who traded and settled across Myanmar and Southeast Asia. The town is especially suitable for slow travel, heritage accommodation and cultural walking.

Mazhan and Qingshui – Volcano and Geothermal Landscapes

The Volcano and Hot Sea Tourism Area combines Tengchong's two defining geological phenomena. The volcanic landscape around Mazhan Township includes prominent volcanic cones and lava formations, while the geothermal landscapes around Qingshui contain steaming ground, boiling springs and hot-water features.

Tengchong is one of China's best-known volcanic-geothermal regions, and its current city profile describes numerous volcanic landforms and widespread geothermal springs as central to the city's destination identity.

Beihai Town – Wetlands and Wellness Resorts

Beihai Town contains the famous Beihai Wetland, one of Tengchong's major 4A attractions, as well as a growing cluster of hot-spring resorts and high-quality rural accommodation. The area works particularly well for wetland sightseeing, birdwatching, wellness stays and countryside holidays.

    Gudong Town – Ginkgo Village

Jiangdong Ginkgo Village in Gudong Town has become one of Tengchong's best-known seasonal photography destinations. Ancient ginkgo trees surround village houses and lanes, turning the settlement golden during the late-autumn foliage season. It remains one of Tengchong's established national 4A attractions.

Tengyue Subdistrict – Western Yunnan War Heritage

Central Tengchong contains the Western Yunnan War of Resistance Memorial Museum and National Martyrs Cemetery, a national 4A attraction dedicated to the Chinese Expeditionary Force and the wider Burma–Yunnan theater of World War II. Together with surviving wartime sites elsewhere in western Yunnan, it forms one of the most important historical tourism themes in Baoshan.

Qingshui Town – Simola Wa Village

Simola Wa Village has developed into an important ethnic and rural tourism destination, combining Wa culture, village landscapes, traditional customs and agricultural experiences. It is also part of Tengchong's wider cultural-tourism corridor connecting Heshun, the volcanic-hot-spring landscape and the Gaoligong Mountain foothills.

Shidian County – Yang Shanzhou Heritage, Hot Springs and Nujiang Landscapes

Shidian County (施甸县) currently administers 5 towns, 6 ordinary townships and 2 ethnic townships, totaling 13 township-level divisions. The county government confirmed this structure again in June 2026.

The county's flagship attraction is Shanzhou Forest Farm, a national 4A scenic area closely associated with the life and environmental work of Yang Shanzhou. Forest landscapes, ecological education and red-heritage study programs make it one of Baoshan's most important educational tourism destinations.

Yaoguan Town – Shanzhou Forest Farm and Wild Duck Lake

Yaoguan Town is a major tourism center within Shidian. In addition to providing access toward Shanzhou Forest Farm, it contains Yaoguan Wild Duck Lake, a national 3A attraction known for wetland and karst scenery. The combination of forest, lake and rural environments makes Yaoguan especially suitable for ecological and study tourism.

    Hot-Spring Tourism

Shidian has developed a growing network of hot-spring wellness destinations, including Shipiao Hot Spring and Wanyü/Wa'nü hot-spring tourism areas, both of which have been developed as national 3A attractions. Current county planning connects them with Shanzhou Forest Farm, Wild Duck Lake, wartime defensive sites and rural villages to encourage longer wellness stays rather than short sightseeing trips.

    Nujiang Valley and Ethnic Villages

Jiucheng, Jiufang and southern Shidian descend toward the warm Nujiang valley, while Bailang Yi and Bulang Ethnic Township and Mulaoyuan Bulang and Yi Ethnic Township preserve important Bulang and Yi cultural traditions. These areas are particularly suitable for village tourism, traditional festivals, agricultural experiences and mountain-road journeys.

Longling County – Songshan Battlefield, Rare Hot Springs and Huanglong Jade

Longling County (龙陵县) lies between the Gaoligong Mountains, Nujiang River and Longchuan River. It currently administers 5 towns and 5 townships, including 1 ethnic township. Its contemporary tourism identity combines World War II heritage, geothermal wellness, Huanglong jade, Dendrobium cultivation, tea gardens and Dai villages.

Longling has become particularly important in Baoshan's 4A scenic-area system. As of 2026, its principal 4A attractions include Songshan Battle Site Park, Yunqi Huanglong Jade Museum and Banglazhang Wellness Resort. Banglazhang was upgraded from 3A to national 4A status in 2025.

Lameng Town – Songshan Battlefield and Burma Road History

Songshan Battle Site Park lies in Lameng Town overlooking the Nujiang gorge and the historic Burma Road corridor. The battlefield preserves bunkers, trenches, artillery positions and other wartime remains from the 1944 Songshan campaign. It is both a national 4A tourist attraction and one of western Yunnan's major World War II heritage destinations.

Longshan Town – Huanglong Jade and Dendrobium

The county seat at Longshan Town is the center for Huanglong jade culture. Yunqi Huanglong Jade Museum became a national 4A attraction after upgrading in 2023 and presents raw stone, carving, mineral culture and contemporary jade craftsmanship.

Longshan is also associated with Longling's Dendrobium industry. The county promotes itself as an important origin area for purple-stem Dendrobium, with tourism increasingly incorporating flower displays, medicinal-plant culture and agricultural study experiences.

    Banglazhang – Hot-Spring Wellness

Banglazhang Wellness Resort is one of Baoshan's most distinctive hot-spring areas. Located north of the county seat, it contains hundreds of geothermal outlets and multiple types of mineral-rich spring water. Its upgrade to national 4A status in 2025 strengthened Longling's position within Baoshan's broader hot-spring wellness tourism network.

Mengnuo and Longjiang – Dai Villages, Rice Fields and Tea

Mengnuo Town contains traditional Dai communities and agricultural scenery, while Longjiang Township has developed rice-field parks, tea gardens and rural leisure attractions. Current county information lists Longjiang Rice Field Park, Longjiang Ten-Thousand-Mu Tea Garden and several village attractions among Longling's national 3A tourism resources.

Changning County – Ancient Tea, Rural Landscapes and Hot Springs

Changning County (昌宁县) currently administers 9 towns, 1 ordinary township and 3 ethnic townships, totaling 13 formal township-level divisions. The current provincial administrative-code register lists Mangshui, Kejie, Kasi, Mengtong, Tianyuan, Wenquan, Jifei, Datianba and Wengdu as its nine towns, together with Gengga Township and Wandian Dai, Zhujie Yi and Goujie Yi-Miao ethnic townships.

Changning's tourism identity revolves around tea, pastoral landscapes, hot springs and rural wellness. Baoshan's 2026 investment guide identifies Changning as an important tea-producing region and notes that Changning black tea has become one of the city's major agricultural and cultural brands.

Tianyuan Town – Youdian River Rural Ecology

The Youdian River Rural Ecological Tourism Area is one of Changning's national 4A attractions. Located around the county seat, it combines river landscapes, wetlands, parks, tea culture and urban-rural recreation, making it the easiest introduction to Changning for first-time visitors.

    Black Hot Spring

Black Hot Spring Scenic Area is Changning's other important national 4A destination. Baoshan's tourism authorities continue to identify it as one of the city's principal hot-spring tourism products, alongside Tengchong and Longling's better-known geothermal resorts.

Mangshui Town – Ancient Tea Landscapes

Mangshui Town is one of the strongest areas for tea-themed rural travel. Official Baoshan tourism routes connect ancient tea gardens, tea villages, mountain wetlands and traditional tea-making experiences in this part of Changning, making it particularly attractive for visitors interested in Yunnan's tea culture away from the more famous Pu'er tea regions.

Kejie and Wandian – Warm Valleys and Wellness

Kejie Town and Wandian Dai Ethnic Township descend toward warmer river valleys and combine subtropical agriculture, hot-spring resources and Dai cultural landscapes. Together with Jifei's hot springs and the mountainous tea country farther north, these areas give Changning considerable potential for long-stay rural and wellness tourism.

    Important 2026 Updates for Baoshan

Several figures in older Baoshan tourism and administrative pages should now be updated. The frequently cited figure of 109 A-rated attractions, including 14 at 4A level, reflected the situation in March 2024. Baoshan's official April 2026 investment guide now gives 112 A-rated attractions, including 2 at 5A and 16 at 4A level.

Another significant change is that Heshun Ancient Town is now a national 5A attraction, meaning Tengchong has two 5A scenic areas. Meanwhile, Banglazhang Wellness Resort in Longling was upgraded to 4A in 2025, helping raise the citywide 4A total.

For administrative content, current formal statistics give 8 subdistricts + 36 towns + 22 ordinary townships + 10 ethnic townships = 76 township-level divisions. Farms, industrial parks, development zones and other functional management areas should not be added as extra statutory towns or townships unless they are separately recognized in the provincial administrative-code system.

Current Administrative Structure of Baoshan City

County-Level Division Subdistricts Towns Ordinary Townships Ethnic Townships Total
    Longyang District 6 5 6 4 21
    Tengchong City 2 12 5 0 19

    Changning County 0 9 1 3 13
    Baoshan Total 8 36 22 10 76

The structure above follows current provincial and county-level official administrative information available in 2026.

For travel planning, Tengchong is the strongest destination for a first visit and normally deserves several days, while Longyang is particularly rewarding for coffee, old caravan culture and the Nujiang–Gaoligong landscape. Longling and Shidian add the strongest World War II, red-heritage and hot-spring experiences, and Changning offers a quieter route through tea mountains, traditional villages and rural wellness landscapes. Together, these five administrative areas explain why Baoshan is far more than a stop between Dali and the Myanmar border: it is one of western Yunnan's richest combinations of volcanoes, hot springs, coffee, tea, biodiversity, history and frontier culture.
