Yunnan Province (云南省) is one of China’s most geographically and culturally diverse travel destinations. Its landscapes extend from tropical rainforest and subtropical river valleys to karst plateaus, alpine lakes, deep gorges, glaciers and snow-covered peaks.

The province lies where the southeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau meets the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau and the mountain systems of mainland Southeast Asia. This complex geography created destinations as different as the Stone Forest (石林) near Kunming, the Three Parallel Rivers (三江并流) of northwestern Yunnan, the tropical forests of Xishuangbanna and the volcanic landscapes of Tengchong.

Yunnan is equally important for cultural travel. Ancient trading towns, Tibetan monasteries, Hani rice terraces, Dai villages, Bai architecture, Naxi Dongba traditions and centuries-old tea forests demonstrate the long interaction between communities, landscapes and regional trade routes.

By the latest provincewide figures repeatedly cited through 2026, Yunnan has:

• More than 200 National 4A attractions following the 2025 evaluation batch

An April 2025 provincial transport report listed ten 5A and 197 4A attractions. Sixteen additional attractions entered the province’s 2025 4A evaluation batch, and several local authorities have since confirmed their designation. Because consolidated directories are often updated later than individual announcements, travelers should verify the current grade of a newly designated attraction through its official visitor information.

Yunnan’s Six UNESCO World Heritage Properties

Yunnan currently has six UNESCO World Heritage properties covering historic cities, geological history, agricultural landscapes and some of the world’s richest mountain ecosystems.

The Three Parallel Rivers property is not one conventional ticketed scenic area. It consists of protected clusters extending across an enormous mountain region and includes landscapes associated with the upper Yangtze, Lancang–Mekong and Nujiang–Salween river systems.

Yunnan’s Ten National 5A Tourist Attractions

The national tourism database records ten 5A tourist attractions in Yunnan. The most recent addition was Heshun Ancient Town (和顺古镇), officially designated in February 2024.

A scenic-area grade measures tourism management, facilities and services. It does not necessarily indicate that a 5A attraction is historically or ecologically more important than a UNESCO property, national nature reserve or protected archaeological site.

Important Corrections to Common Yunnan Attraction Claims

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

The Glacier Park cableway and viewing route reach very high elevations, but descriptions such as “the lowest-latitude modern glacier in the Northern Hemisphere” should be used cautiously. Glacier classifications and comparisons change with scientific measurement and glacier retreat.

The attraction remains a high-altitude environment. Visitors should plan according to current weather, cableway operation and personal health rather than treating oxygen products as a guarantee against altitude illness.

Pudacuo

Pudacuo is widely promoted as a national park tourism area, but it should not be confused with the first group of five parks formally established under China’s current national-park system in 2021.

Puzhehei

Different sources give different numbers for lakes, peaks and caves depending on the boundary used. Its visitor value lies in the combined landscape of karst hills, interconnected water, lotus fields and villages rather than one fixed numerical claim.

Dounan Flower Market

Dounan is a functioning flower-trading and logistics center as well as a visitor attraction. Late evening and night are often more active for commercial flower trading, while daytime is easier for general sightseeing and photography.

Proposed and Newly Designated 4A Attractions

The late-2025 provincial list contained 16 attractions. Local 2026 notices confirm that at least several, including Dounan Flower Market and Wangjiazhuang Red Tourism Area, have been formally designated. The batch also included Zhaotong Ancient City, Langbapu Earth Forest, Jianshui Tourist Train, Baisha Murals and Lushi Ancient Town.
