  • Turpan Culture

Turpan (吐鲁番), historically known as the “Fire Land,” has been one of the most important centers along the northern route of the ancient Silk Road. Located at the crossroads of Eastern and Western civilizations, Turpan has witnessed thousands of years of cultural exchange between China, Central Asia, Persia, and the wider Silk Road world.

According to the Third National Survey of Cultural Heritage, Turpan has 1,496 immovable cultural heritage sites, including 13 National Key Cultural Heritage Sites, 56 autonomous regional-level heritage sites, and 314 district- and county-level heritage sites. Among them, two sites are listed as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites: Jiaohe Ancient City (交河故城) and Gaochang Ancient City (高昌故城).

The historical and cultural landscape of Turpan is closely connected with its geography. Gaochang District (高昌区) served as the political and cultural center of ancient Turpan, preserving the most important Silk Road remains such as Jiaohe Ancient City, Gaochang Ancient City, Flaming Mountains, and Karez Wells. Shanshan County (鄯善县) is famous for the ancient Uyghur village of Tuyugou and the Kumtag Desert, while Toksun County (托克逊县) is known for its traditional food culture, intangible cultural heritage, and spring apricot blossoms.

With a history of more than 2,600 years, it is often called the “first earthen village in China.” The village preserves traditional earthen houses, ancient streets, Islamic cultural heritage, and traces of earlier Buddhist civilization. It was included in the first batch of Chinese traditional villages.

    Other traditional villages include:

    • Kuonaxia Village (阔纳夏村), Yingxiamaili Village (英夏买里村), Dihansu Village (迪汗苏村), Tugemanboyi Village (吐格曼博依村), Sangeqiao Village (三个桥村), and Muqam Village (木卡姆村) in Lukqin Town, Shanshan County.
