  • Kanas Lake Travel Tips

Kanas Lake (喀纳斯湖) is one of the signature natural destinations of northern Xinjiang, set deep in the Altai Mountains of Burqin County. Its appeal comes from far more than the lake itself: glacial landscapes, turquoise water, Siberian-style forests, the Three Bays, morning mist, mountain viewpoints, wooden villages, and the cultural landscapes of Kanas, Hemu and Baihaba all form part of the wider travel experience. Kanas Scenic Area is a National 5A attraction, while Kanas National Geopark is noted for Quaternary glacial landforms, rivers, forests, meadows and alpine-lake scenery.

The most important rule for planning Kanas is simple: do not treat it as a one-day sightseeing stop. If Kanas Lake itself is your priority, stay two nights inside the Kanas area. If you want the classic first-time combination of Kanas + Hemu, stay one night in Kanas Village and one night in Hemu Village. Staying inside the scenic area allows you to experience the landscapes before the main daytime crowds arrive and makes early-morning mist photography far easier.

    Why Visit Kanas Lake?

Kanas combines a high-altitude lake, forested mountains, river bends and traditional wooden settlements in one compact natural landscape. Xinjiang tourism authorities describe the area as a cool summer destination in the central Altai Mountains, with a summer average temperature of around 17°C, making it very different from the hotter basins and deserts elsewhere in Xinjiang.

Its strongest experiences are highly dependent on light and weather. Morning mist can transform Fairy Bay into a dreamlike river landscape, the forests around Moon Bay and Wolong Bay change dramatically through the seasons, and the Fish Viewing Platform provides the broadest elevated view over Kanas Lake.

For this reason, Kanas rewards travelers who allow time for a second sunrise, a changing weather window or a slower walk rather than trying to collect every attraction in a few hours.

How Many Days to Spend at Kanas?

2 Days and 1 Night – Minimum Recommended

This is the shortest itinerary that still allows you to experience Kanas properly.

Stay inside Kanas Old Village or New Village, visit the lake and Fish Viewing Platform after arrival, then use the following morning for Fairy Bay, Moon Bay and Wolong Bay.

It works well for travelers who do not plan to visit Hemu.

3 Days and 2 Nights – Best for First-Time Visitors

There are two good ways to use three days.

Kanas-focused version: spend both nights in Kanas and divide the lake, Fish Viewing Platform, Three Bays and village walks across two full sightseeing periods.

Kanas + Hemu version: spend the first night in Kanas Village and the second in Hemu Village. This provides the classic combination of Kanas Lake + Three Bays + Hemu sunrise, but it is slightly faster-paced.

4 Days and 3 Nights – Best Overall Experience

For photographers and slow travelers, this is the strongest choice.

    A particularly comfortable arrangement is:

2 nights in Kanas + 1 night in Hemu, or 1 night Kanas + 1 night Baihaba + 1 night Hemu if border-area arrangements are confirmed in advance.

The extra night gives you a valuable backup if rain, fog or low cloud hides the mountains.

Classic 3-Day Kanas and Hemu Travel Plan

Day 1 – Arrive at Kanas and Stay Inside the Scenic Area

Reach Jiadengyu, complete entry procedures and transfer onto the scenic-area transport system.

During the 2026 summer operating season, Kanas uses a sightseeing-bus plus village-bus system, with the main visitor routes connecting Jiadengyu, Kanas, Hemu and Baihaba. Current summer guidance lists general entry/exit transport around 08:00–20:00 and village buses running later into the evening, although actual daily operating times can be adjusted for weather, passenger volume and seasonal daylight.

Stay in Kanas Old Village or New Village

For the best experience, stay in Kanas Old Village or Kanas New Village rather than returning to Jiadengyu.

The villages contain traditional-style wooden accommodation and lie within the wider protected landscape near the lake. Kanas Village itself sits within the Kanas National Nature Reserve, and local accommodation has long been part of the area's controlled village-tourism system.

    The main advantages are practical:

You can begin your morning much earlier, avoid wasting time repeatedly entering and leaving the scenic area, walk through the village after the main tour groups have departed, and react more easily to fog or changing light.

    Afternoon – Kanas Lake

After checking in, spend the afternoon around Kanas Lake.

A lakeside walk is often more rewarding than immediately trying to visit every optional activity. Forest trails and boardwalks provide quiet perspectives on the water, mountains and changing lake color.

Boat excursions may operate seasonally, but they should be considered optional rather than essential. The strongest Kanas experience is the landscape itself.

    Fish Viewing Platform

The Fish Viewing Platform (观鱼台) is the major elevated viewpoint above Kanas Lake.

It provides a much wider understanding of the lake's geography than the shoreline alone, with views over the turquoise water, surrounding mountains, forests and distant Altai peaks.

Current visitor arrangements normally involve a separate transfer from the Kanas visitor hub followed by a substantial stair climb. The transport product and operating hours can change, so purchase or confirm the Fish Viewing Platform transfer after arriving rather than relying on an old online timetable.

Late afternoon can provide attractive light, but cloud conditions matter more than a fixed clock time.

    Evening in Kanas Village

Return to your accommodation rather than rushing out of the scenic area.

Evenings are excellent for walking through the wooden villages, watching the mountains lose their light and enjoying a quieter atmosphere once most day visitors have left.

In clear weather, the relatively dark mountain environment can also be rewarding for night photography.

Day 2 – Fairy Bay Morning Mist, Three Bays and Hemu Village

The second morning is the most important part of the classic Kanas experience.

    Early Morning – Fairy Bay

Fairy Bay (神仙湾) is famous for early-morning mist drifting over the Kanas River and surrounding forest.

The phenomenon is weather-dependent. Cool nights, moisture and calm conditions can produce spectacular fog, but there is no guarantee that heavy mist will appear on a particular morning.

This is precisely why staying within the Kanas area is so useful—you can reach the Three Bays much earlier than travelers arriving from distant accommodation.

    Moon Bay

Continue to Moon Bay (月亮湾), one of the most recognizable Kanas landscapes.

Viewed from above, the river bends through forest in a smooth crescent form. The color changes according to light, cloud and season, ranging from deep blue-green to pale turquoise.

Do not limit your visit to the roadside viewing platform. If time and conditions allow, walk part of the lower boardwalk through the forest.

Moon Bay to Wolong Bay Walk

The Moon Bay–Wolong Bay section is one of the best short walks in Kanas.

Instead of boarding the sightseeing vehicle immediately, follow the designated forest-and-river trail where open. The slower perspective is completely different from viewing the bays through a vehicle window.

The route passes through forest beside the river and generally feels quieter than the major roadside platforms.

    Wolong Bay

Wolong Bay (卧龙湾) forms another broad bend in the Kanas River, with a distinctive wooded island and calm water.

By visiting Fairy Bay, Moon Bay and Wolong Bay consecutively, travelers can see how the river changes as it flows away from Kanas Lake.

    Afternoon – Travel to Hemu

After completing the Three Bays, transfer toward Hemu Village (禾木村).

Under the 2026 summer transport system, connections operate through the scenic-area visitor-service network, but direct services and transfer arrangements can vary by day. Current guidance specifically notes that some Jiadengyu–Hemu and Hemu–Kanas services operate according to actual on-site scheduling.

Do not build a tight itinerary around a fixed “1.5-hour transfer.” Allow extra time for queuing, vehicle dispatch and seasonal traffic.

    Stay Inside Hemu Village

Spend the second night in Hemu.

The village is particularly attractive in the early morning and evening, when the wooden houses, river valley, birch forest, smoke from chimneys and surrounding mountains create a completely different atmosphere from midday.

    Hemu Sunset

Walk toward the Haden Viewing Platform or another designated elevated viewpoint before sunset.

From above, the traditional wooden settlement spreads across the valley below the mountains.

Autumn is particularly photogenic, but summer provides greener fields, forests and longer evenings.

Day 3 – Hemu Sunrise and Departure

Wake before sunrise and return to the village viewpoint.

Morning mist is not guaranteed, but calm autumn mornings can produce layers of fog over the river and forest, while the rising sun gradually illuminates the wooden houses.

After breakfast, walk through the village and birch forest before beginning your onward journey.

Do not book a flight or train too tightly after leaving Hemu. Mountain roads, sightseeing-bus transfers and peak-season congestion can all extend travel time.

A Better 3-Day Plan If Kanas Lake Is Your Main Priority

Travelers interested primarily in Kanas Lake photography and hiking should consider skipping Hemu on this trip.

    Day 1

Jiadengyu → Kanas Village → Kanas Lake → lakeside walk → Fish Viewing Platform → stay Kanas.

    Day 2

Fairy Bay sunrise → Moon Bay → walk to Wolong Bay → return to village → second lake visit or forest walk → stay Kanas.

    Day 3

Second sunrise opportunity → relaxed breakfast → leave Kanas.

This version gives you two mornings and two evenings inside Kanas, dramatically improving your chances of good weather and atmospheric photography.

    Adding Baihaba Village

Baihaba Village (白哈巴村) is an excellent extension for travelers who prefer quieter villages and border landscapes.

It lies in the China–Kazakhstan border area and requires a border-area travel permit. Recent official Altay guidance continues to identify permit requirements and specifies different processing locations depending on whether travelers enter from the Tieket/Tiereketi direction or through the Kanas side.

    Important for International Travelers

Foreign passport holders should not assume that the procedure is identical to that for mainland Chinese ID-card holders.

Because Baihaba is in a controlled border area, confirm the current eligibility, documentation and reporting requirements before building it into a fixed itinerary. Bring the original passport and allow additional processing time.

Do not rely on old online statements saying that every traveler can always obtain a permit immediately beside the Kanas transfer center; permit locations and procedures can change.

How to Get to Kanas Lake

    By Air – Fastest Option

    Burqin Kanas Airport

Burqin Kanas Airport (KJI) is the closest airport to the scenic area and is particularly useful during the main tourism season.

In summer 2026, airlines have been adding and resuming Kanas services as part of the peak-season Xinjiang network, but operating days and city pairs vary during the season.

For this reason, search your exact date rather than assuming that Kanas Airport has a daily flight from every major Xinjiang city.

After landing, continue by airport transfer, licensed shared vehicle or private car toward Jiadengyu or your relevant visitor-service center.

    Altay Airport

Altay Airport is farther away but usually offers a broader and more stable range of flight connections.

Xinjiang's 2026 summer aviation plan continued expanding Altay's domestic connectivity, including additional routes from cities outside Xinjiang and new intra-Xinjiang links.

For many international travelers, flying to Altay and arranging a private road transfer provides more scheduling flexibility than relying entirely on Kanas Airport.

    By Train

There is no railway station at Kanas Lake.

Rail travelers generally reach Altay or the Beitun area and complete the remaining journey by road.

This option works particularly well for travelers beginning in Urumqi who prefer an overnight train and then a road transfer through northern Xinjiang.

Allow sufficient time between train arrival and scenic-area entry; the road section into the Altai Mountains is not a simple urban transfer.

    By Car

Self-driving is one of the best ways to explore the wider Altay region.

    A common approach is:

    Urumqi → S21 Desert Expressway corridor → Burqin → Jiadengyu / Kanas

Burqin is also an excellent place for an overnight stop, particularly if arriving late. Xinjiang tourism authorities actively develop Burqin and Kanas as a connected destination rather than completely separate tourism products.

Can You Drive a Private Car into Kanas?

During the main summer tourism season, visitors should plan on leaving ordinary private vehicles outside the core scenic areas and using the managed sightseeing transport network.

The 2026 summer system is based on sightseeing vehicles and village buses linking the main visitor centers and scenic zones.

This is important when choosing accommodation: staying in Kanas Village does not mean you can necessarily drive your own car directly to the guesthouse during peak-season traffic management.

Winter is different. Official Altay winter guidance notes that vehicle entry under winter arrangements can require four-wheel-drive vehicles equipped with winter tires, reflecting the very different ice-and-snow road conditions.

Always treat summer and winter transport rules separately.

    Kanas Scenic-Area Transport

Jiadengyu functions as the principal gateway for many summer visitors.

From there, managed transport connects with the Kanas visitor center, where travelers transfer to local routes serving the lake, villages, Three Bays, Fish Viewing Platform and Baihaba direction.

The 2026 summer transport system includes connections among:

    Jiadengyu → Kanas

    Jiadengyu → Hemu

    Kanas → Baihaba

    Tiereketi → Baihaba → Kanas

and village buses within the main settlement areas. Exact route frequency depends on actual daily operations.

    Current Ticket Planning

Kanas uses a combination of scenic admission and sightseeing transport products, with different options depending on whether you enter once, leave and re-enter, or combine Kanas with Hemu and Baihaba.

Current 2026 summer listings continue to distinguish between single-entry and multiple-entry products, while peak-season admission is capacity-controlled.

For an international travel plan, the safest approach is:

Stay inside Kanas → choose the ticket product designed for one entry with an overnight stay.

Stay in Jiadengyu and enter on two separate days → check whether you need the multiple-entry product.

Visit Kanas + Hemu + Baihaba → compare the current combined-area ticket with purchasing separately.

Because prices, quotas and time slots can change, book through the current official Kanas ticketing channel and do not rely on a screenshot or blog from a previous season.

Best Time to Visit Kanas Lake

June to August – Green Kanas and Summer Escape

Summer brings green forests, wildflowers, flowing rivers and comfortable mountain temperatures.

Official Xinjiang tourism information places the average summer temperature around 17°C, making Kanas one of the region's most attractive summer escapes.

July and August are also peak holiday months, so accommodation and scenic transport can be busy.

    What to Wear

    Use layered clothing:

T-shirt or base layer + fleece/light sweater + windproof jacket.

Carry a lightweight down jacket if you plan to watch sunrise, wait for fog or stay outdoors after sunset.

September – Best Overall Photography Season

September is the signature autumn season.

The forests gradually turn gold, orange and yellow, while the turquoise lake and snow-dusted mountains can create the classic Kanas postcard scenery.

The precise autumn-color peak changes according to annual weather. Instead of treating September 20–October 5 as a guaranteed formula, check the current year's foliage reports shortly before travel.

This is also one of the busiest and most expensive periods of the year.

October – Early Snow and Late Autumn

Early October can still provide extraordinary color, but temperatures fall rapidly and snow becomes increasingly possible.

Later in the month, services may transition toward winter operating arrangements.

Pack substantially warmer clothing than you would in September.

November to March – Winter Kanas

Winter transforms Kanas and Hemu into snow-covered mountain destinations.

The experience is completely different from summer: deep snow, frozen landscapes, wooden cabins, snow-covered forests and winter road travel become the main attractions.

Official winter guidance emphasizes that Kanas is a mountainous scenic area with steep, winding roads and challenging snow-and-ice conditions; vehicles entering under winter arrangements may need 4WD and winter tires.

Winter is best suited to travelers comfortable with extreme cold and flexible schedules.

April to May – Transitional Season

Spring arrives late in the Altai Mountains.

Snowmelt, muddy conditions, variable road access and changing operating arrangements can make this period less predictable than summer.

It can be peaceful, but first-time travelers generally have an easier experience from June onward.

Best Kanas Experiences by Time of Day

    Time Best Experience Why
Early Morning Fairy Bay Best chance for river mist
Morning Moon Bay and Wolong Bay Softer light and fewer visitors
Late Morning Forest boardwalks Comfortable walking
Afternoon Kanas Lake Good for relaxed lakeside exploration
Late Afternoon Fish Viewing Platform Broad mountain and lake views
Evening Kanas Village Quieter village atmosphere
Sunrise Hemu Viewing Platform Wooden village, mist and mountain light

    Where to Stay

    Kanas Old Village

Best for travelers who prioritize atmosphere, convenience and early photography.

Wooden accommodation is close to the scenic core, but rooms vary considerably in size, heating, bathrooms and sound insulation.

    Kanas New Village

Often slightly quieter and also suitable for staying inside the scenic zone.

Check the exact distance from the nearest village-bus stop before booking.

    Jiadengyu

Best for travelers prioritizing larger hotels, easier private-car parking and potentially lower accommodation costs.

The disadvantage is obvious: you must spend additional time entering and leaving the scenic area and are less well positioned for early-morning fog.

    Hemu Village

Stay inside Hemu if sunrise is important.

A day trip can show you the village, but an overnight stay provides the experience that makes Hemu special.

    Accommodation Booking Strategy

    Book early for:

    July–August summer holidays

    and especially

mid-September to early October autumn-color season.

Do not select accommodation purely by the words “Kanas Hotel.” Confirm whether the property is actually in Kanas Village, Jiadengyu, Burqin, Hemu or another settlement, because the transfer time between these areas can be substantial.

    Food and Supplies

Food is available inside Kanas and Hemu, but selection is more limited and prices can be higher than in Burqin or Altay.

Carry a small amount of water, snacks, fruit or simple food, especially for early-morning photography and longer waits at viewpoints.

Do not overpack food for a wilderness expedition—the villages have tourism services—but do not expect the convenience of a major city either.

Clothing – One of the Most Important Kanas Tips

Even in summer, Kanas can feel cold early in the morning.

The mountain environment is cool enough that a summer trip may require both a T-shirt in the afternoon and a warm jacket at sunrise. Xinjiang tourism authorities specifically promote Kanas as a cool-weather summer destination, with temperatures far below those of Xinjiang's desert basins.

    Bring:

comfortable hiking shoes, long trousers, fleece or sweater, windproof jacket, light down jacket, rain protection, hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.

Autumn travelers should upgrade the insulation considerably.

Morning Mist – Do Not Treat It as Guaranteed

Fairy Bay and Hemu are famous for mist, but weather determines everything.

A clear, dry morning may produce little or no fog. A rainy or cloudy morning may obscure the mountains entirely.

For photographers, the best strategy is not to chase one exact photograph but to stay long enough to experience several different conditions.

    Hiking in Kanas

The most accessible walking experiences include Three Bays boardwalk sections, lakeside paths and village walks.

Use only designated trails. Kanas is both a protected natural area and a national geopark with sensitive forest, wetland and geological environments.

More ambitious backcountry routes should not be attempted simply because they appear on an offline map. Check current access and local requirements.

    Wildlife and Environmental Protection

Do not feed wildlife, leave designated paths, collect plants or natural objects, or enter restricted forest and wetland areas.

Kanas is a protected ecological landscape, and tourism development has included strict measures intended to maintain the traditional village environment and reduce uncontrolled construction and environmental pressure.

    Drone Photography

Do not assume that drones are permitted merely because you see aerial photographs online.

Kanas includes protected natural areas and sensitive border-region airspace. Drone restrictions can vary by location and security requirements.

Check locally before flying and obey any no-fly notices.

    International Visitor Tips

Carry your original passport, not only a phone photograph.

Accommodation registration, transport, scenic tickets and border-area procedures may require identification.

For Baihaba, confirm border-area requirements before arrival rather than assuming the permit can always be processed after you enter Kanas.

Mobile payment is widely used, but keeping a bank card and a modest amount of cash as backup is useful in remote mountain areas.

    Practical 2-Day Kanas Plan

    Day 1

Jiadengyu → enter Kanas → check into Kanas Village → Kanas Lake → Fish Viewing Platform → village evening.

    Day 2

Fairy Bay early morning → Moon Bay → walk toward Wolong Bay → return to Kanas Village → leave through Jiadengyu.

This is the best compact itinerary for travelers who want to experience Kanas Lake itself rather than rush toward Hemu.

Practical 3-Day Kanas + Hemu Plan

    Day 1

Arrive Kanas → stay Kanas Village → lake and Fish Viewing Platform.

    Day 2

Fairy Bay → Moon Bay → Wolong Bay → transfer to Hemu → Hemu sunset → stay Hemu.

    Day 3

Hemu sunrise → birch forest and village walk → depart toward Burqin, Altay or onward northern Xinjiang destinations.

Practical 4-Day Kanas, Baihaba and Hemu Plan

    Day 1

Enter Kanas → lake → stay Kanas.

    Day 2

Three Bays → Baihaba after completing the required border-area formalities → stay Baihaba or return according to current transport arrangements.

    Day 3

    Kanas/Baihaba → Hemu → sunset → stay Hemu.

    Day 4

Hemu sunrise → village walk → depart.

This is much more comfortable than attempting all three areas in three days.

    Essential Kanas Travel Tips

Stay inside the scenic area if possible. The single biggest improvement you can make to a Kanas itinerary is replacing a daily Jiadengyu commute with an overnight stay in Kanas Village.

Give morning mist more than one chance. Weather determines Fairy Bay and Hemu photography.

Do not make Hemu a rushed afternoon photo stop. Stay overnight if you want to understand why the village is famous.

Treat current shuttle schedules as dynamic. The 2026 summer system generally operates main entry transport during daytime and village buses later into the evening, but actual operations can change.

Book autumn travel early. Kanas is exceptionally popular when the forests turn gold.

Do not confuse Kanas Airport with Altay Airport. Kanas Airport is closer and can save substantial road time when a suitable flight operates, while Altay generally provides broader scheduling options. Summer 2026 has seen additional Kanas and Altay aviation capacity.

Allow buffer time on your departure day. Scenic shuttles, mountain roads, weather and peak-season crowds make tight flight or train connections risky.

Check Baihaba requirements separately. It is a border-area destination and requires additional documentation beyond an ordinary Kanas visit.

For a first visit, the strongest plan is 3 days and 2 nights with one night in Kanas Village and one night in Hemu, while travelers who care more about nature photography than covering destinations should spend two nights inside Kanas itself. The essence of Kanas is not how many attractions you can check off—it is being there when the landscape changes: mist drifting across Fairy Bay at dawn, forest paths beside Moon Bay, turquoise water below the Fish Viewing Platform, and quiet wooden villages after the daytime crowds have disappeared.
