Altay Culture

Altay is inhabited by many ethnic people so that the local culture has distinctive minority characteristics. Here is some of local culture.

Religion

There are many ethnic groups in Altay. Among them, Tuvas (图瓦人) believe inTibetan Buddhism which belongs to the Lamaism of Buddhism. They have their own temples which are built with pine logs. Temples are situated in Hemu Village (禾木村) where more than 2,000 Tuwas (图瓦人) worship and pray.

There are other minorities like Hui, Uyghur and Kazak nationalities. So in addition to Buddhist, there are people who believe in Islam.

Aitys (阿依特斯)

It is one of the ancient celebration events of the Kazak people. The event usually falls in autumn. During the festival, nomads skilled in singing and dancing gather together to sing, dance, poetize impromptu and have fun. Aitys is a Kazak traditional festival, and is also one of the most exciting festivals of the year.

Girls Chasing (姑娘追)

It is a horse sports that is loved by Kazak young men and women. The activity is the special way that young men and women express their affection.

It is usually held during festivals, and is one of the important contents of folk customs tourism. Hospitable Kazak girls would invite tourists to participate the recreational activity together.

Ayijialeke Dance (阿依加勒克舞)

Also known as Moon Dance, it is a Kazak group dance that is widely popular in Altay Prefecture.

Diaoyang (刁羊)

It is a traditional sport in Xinjiang, which shows fearless spirit of people on horseback. It is also an ancient game which is quiet popular in rural pasture areas of Hotan. Diaoyang (刁羊) is often held during the period of springs, weddings, funerals, and festivals.
