  • Aksu Attractions

As a frontier city, Aksu Prefecture is blessed with many tourism resources. And most of them are unique. Its cultural resources are abundant because many small counties established and fell down here, some cultures flourished here. There are some famous scenic spots, such as Kuqa Temple (库车大寺), Kuqa Royal Palace (库车王府), Thousand Buddhas Cave of Kizil (克孜尔尕哈千佛洞), etc. Besides, there are a lot of natural resources because of its geography, and many of them are national 4A scenic spot, like Tianshan Grand Canyon (天山大峡谷) , Wensu Grand Canyon (温宿大峡谷), Kizil Ghost City (克孜尔魔鬼城) , Tarim River (塔里木河), Miraculous Trees Garden (神木园) and so on. Picturesque scenery and splendid cultural spots would make visitors enjoy their travelling to Aksu.

Aksu Prefecture (阿克苏地区) in southern Xinjiang is one of the most diverse Silk Road destinations in western China, combining the southern Tianshan Mountains, immense red-rock canyons, glaciers, desert landscapes, the Tarim River, ancient poplar forests, Buddhist grottoes, Silk Road ruins, historic oasis cities, and distinctive Uyghur and Dolan cultural traditions.

Historically associated with ancient Gumo, Wensu, and the Qiuci civilization, the region stood at an important crossroads between China, Central Asia, and the wider Silk Road world. Today its tourism identity can be understood through five major themes: Tianshan mountains and canyons, Tarim River and desert landscapes, Qiuci Buddhist and Silk Road heritage, historic oasis culture, and Dolan folk traditions. Official Xinjiang sources identify Kizil Caves, Kizilgaha Beacon Tower, and Subashi Buddhist Temple Ruins as World Cultural Heritage components, while the Tomur mountain region forms part of the Xinjiang Tianshan World Natural Heritage property.

    Top Attractions in Aksu Prefecture

The following ranking is designed for first-time international travelers, taking into account landscape value, historical importance, UNESCO recognition, cultural significance, uniqueness, and overall travel experience. It is a recommended travel ranking rather than an official government ranking.

Xinjiang's official 4A attraction directory currently includes a substantial group of Aksu destinations, including the Aksu Prefecture Museum, Dolan Tribe, Kizil Caves, Kangqi Wetland, Jiayi Village, and other scenic areas across the prefecture.

    Tianshan Mountains and Canyon Landscapes

The northern edge of Aksu Prefecture rises dramatically from oasis and desert into the southern Tianshan Mountains, producing some of Xinjiang's most impressive geological scenery.

    Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon

The Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon (天山神秘大峡谷) north of Kuqa is the prefecture's most recognizable natural attraction. Towering red and brown sandstone walls rise above narrow passages formed by tectonic movement, water erosion, and wind.

The canyon is particularly impressive when sunlight enters the narrow rock corridors and creates changing bands of red, orange, and gold. It is also one of the classic landscapes encountered along the southern section of the Duku Highway.

The site is best suited to general sightseeing, geological travel, photography, and road trips. During unstable weather, visitors should follow scenic-area instructions because narrow canyon environments can be vulnerable to sudden runoff.

    Tomur Grand Canyon

Tomur Grand Canyon, also known as Wensu Grand Canyon (天山托木尔景区·大峡谷), offers a very different canyon experience.

Its enormous red cliffs, eroded ridges, dry valleys, salt-related formations, and unusual geological structures form part of the wider tourism landscape associated with the Tomur region. Official Xinjiang sources identify the Tomur mountain system as part of the World Natural Heritage landscape and highlight Tomur Grand Canyon as one of Aksu's major tourism attractions.

The scale is considerably larger and more open than many conventional walking canyons, making it particularly attractive for self-drive travel, landscape photography, geology study, and outdoor exploration.

    Tomur Peak Region

The Tomur Peak (托木尔峰) region represents the highest and most alpine side of Aksu. Glaciers, snow peaks, high mountain ecosystems, rivers, meadows, and forests create a landscape completely different from the Tarim Basin below.

The region is more suitable for specialist outdoor, ecological, mountaineering, and expedition-style tourism than casual sightseeing.

    Ta Village

Ta Village (塔村) in Wensu County is one of the most attractive rural destinations beneath the Tianshan Mountains.

Snow peaks rise behind forests, grasslands, orchards, and village landscapes, making it suitable for slow travel, photography, summer escapes, family holidays, and countryside stays.

Its cooler mountain climate also makes it a useful alternative to the much hotter lowland oasis during summer.

Ancient Qiuci Civilization and Silk Road Heritage

Eastern Aksu, particularly Kuqa, Baicheng, Xinhe, and Shaya, preserves some of the most important remains of the ancient Qiuci cultural sphere.

The Aksu tourism authorities have long promoted this eastern cluster as a Qiuci cultural tourism region, centered on Kizil Caves, Subashi, Kizilgaha, Kuqa Old Town, and related Silk Road sites.

    Kizil Caves

The Kizil Caves (克孜尔石窟) in Baicheng County are among China's earliest major Buddhist cave complexes and one of the most important surviving artistic legacies of ancient Kucha.

The caves are particularly famous for their Buddhist murals, narrative paintings, decorative patterns, and evidence of cultural exchange between India, Central Asia, ancient Xinjiang, and China.

Kizil Caves are a component of the UNESCO-listed Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang'an–Tianshan Corridor, and the attraction is officially rated National 4A.

For travelers interested in archaeology and Buddhist art, Kizil is one of the highest-value cultural destinations in all of southern Xinjiang.

    Subashi Buddhist Temple Ruins

The Subashi Buddhist Temple Ruins (苏巴什佛寺遗址) near Kuqa preserve the remains of a major monastery associated with ancient Qiuci Buddhism.

Large earthen stupas, temple foundations, monastic buildings, and archaeological remains show the former scale of Buddhist religious life in the Kucha oasis.

The site is another component of the UNESCO Silk Road World Heritage property and works particularly well when combined with Kizil Caves and Kizilgaha Beacon Tower.

    Kizilgaha Beacon Tower

The Kizilgaha Beacon Tower (克孜尔尕哈烽燧) rises from the dry landscape outside Kuqa and represents the military and communications infrastructure that once protected routes through the Western Regions.

Beacon towers allowed information to be transmitted across vast distances using smoke and fire signals.

Today Kizilgaha is one of the three internationally recognized Silk Road heritage sites highlighted by Aksu's tourism authorities.

    Kuqa Old Town

Kuqa Old Town (库车老城) provides the living-cultural counterpart to the archaeological sites surrounding the city.

The Resitan historical district preserves colorful doors, traditional courtyards, mosques, shops, food stalls, residential lanes, and an urban atmosphere strongly associated with southern Xinjiang.

Rather than functioning entirely as a museum district, much of the area remains connected with ordinary community life.

    Qiuci Alley

Qiuci Alley (龟兹小巷) has become one of Kuqa's most popular cultural neighborhoods, combining restored historic streets with local food, handicrafts, cafés, homestays, cultural workshops, and intangible heritage experiences.

Late afternoon and evening are particularly pleasant, when the streets become more active and the softer light emphasizes the brightly painted doors and façades.

    Kuqa Royal Palace

The Kuqa Royal Palace (库车王府) introduces the history of the hereditary rulers of Kuqa and their relationship with the Qing court and later regional history.

The present complex includes reconstructed architecture, courtyards, displays, and museum-style interpretation of local royal and Qiuci history.

    Kuqa Grand Mosque

The Kuqa Grand Mosque (库车大寺) is one of the city's important Islamic cultural landmarks.

Its religious architecture and location within the old urban fabric make it a useful destination for travelers studying the transformation of Kuqa from a major Buddhist Silk Road center into a predominantly Islamic oasis city.

Visitors should observe local access rules and respect worshippers.

    Aksu City and Oasis Culture

Aksu City (阿克苏市) functions as the administrative, commercial, and transportation center of the prefecture and provides a useful base for exploring central Aksu.

    Aksu Prefecture Museum

The Aksu Prefecture Museum (阿克苏地区文博院) is one of the best places to begin a regional trip.

Its collections introduce the archaeology, Silk Road history, ancient Qiuci culture, ethnic traditions, and historical development of the Aksu oasis region. The museum appears in Xinjiang's current National 4A attraction directory.

Visiting the museum before traveling to Kuqa, Kizil, or Xinhe makes the archaeological sites easier to understand.

    Dolan River Scenic Area

The Dolan River Scenic Area (多浪河景区) is one of Aksu City's main urban leisure zones, combining landscaped river corridors, public spaces, greenery, and evening recreation.

It provides a relaxed contrast to the deserts, canyons, and archaeological sites elsewhere in the prefecture.

    Aksu National Wetland Park

The Aksu National Wetland Park (阿克苏国家湿地公园) showcases the importance of water and wetland ecosystems within an otherwise arid region.

The park is particularly suitable for birdwatching, ecological education, family travel, and understanding how rivers and wetlands sustain the oasis landscape.

Official Aksu tourism routes have long combined the city museum, wetland park, Dolan River, and surrounding ecological attractions.

Wensu County: Snow Mountains, Canyons and Ecological Restoration

Wensu is one of the prefecture's most geographically diverse counties, rising from oasis farmland toward Tomur Peak.

    Kekeya Memorial Hall

The Kekeya Memorial Hall (柯柯牙纪念馆) documents one of Aksu's most important ecological-restoration stories.

The wider Kekeya project transformed extensive areas affected by desertification through large-scale afforestation and ecological management. The memorial attraction was officially recognized as a National 4A red tourism site in 2021.

For environmental study tours, it provides a useful contrast with the natural mountain ecosystems of Tomur and the desert environments farther south.

    Tianshan Shenmu Garden

The Tianshan Shenmu Garden (天山神木园) is known for ancient trees, unusual woodland scenery, springs, and a cooler environment at the edge of the mountains.

It has long been included in official Aksu tourism routes connecting Wensu and Wushi.

Baicheng County: Buddhist Art and Wetland Landscapes

Baicheng is internationally important because of the Kizil Caves, but its tourism resources extend beyond Buddhist art.

    Kangqi Wetland

Kangqi Wetland (康其湿地) provides a contrasting landscape of water, vegetation, birds, and oasis ecology in an otherwise dry region. It is included in Xinjiang's current National 4A attraction directory.

Baicheng also contains rugged badland and desert landscapes that have historically been promoted as part of Aksu's eastern adventure routes.

Xinhe County: Silk Road History and Musical Heritage

Xinhe is particularly important for understanding the relationship between Han-Tang frontier administration and living Uyghur intangible heritage.

    Tang Anxi Protectorate Cultural Park

The Tang Anxi Protectorate Cultural Park (唐安西都护府文化园) interprets the historical role of the Western Regions during the Tang dynasty.

It was officially designated a National 4A Tourist Attraction in 2023, strengthening Xinhe's position as one of Aksu's main historical tourism destinations.

    Jiayi Village

Jiayi Village (加依村) is famous for traditional Uyghur musical-instrument craftsmanship.

Local artisans produce instruments associated with Xinjiang music and performance traditions, making the village especially suitable for intangible heritage, music, craftsmanship, photography, and cultural study tours.

Jiayi Village is included in Xinjiang's official 4A attraction directory.

Shaya County: Tarim River, Wetlands and Poplar Forests

Shaya lies along one of the most fascinating transitions in southern Xinjiang, where the Tarim River, desert, wetlands, and ancient poplar forests meet.

    Tarim River Wetland Scenic Area

The Tarim River Wetland Scenic Area (塔里木河湿地旅游景区) combines river scenery, desert environments, wetland vegetation, and large stands of poplar trees.

Autumn is the classic season, when the poplar forests turn brilliant yellow against blue skies, sandy landscapes, and the winding river.

Weigan River Ecological and Cultural Tourism Scenic Area

The Weigan River Ecological and Cultural Tourism Scenic Area (渭干河生态文化旅游景区) was designated National 4A in 2023.

The area emphasizes river ecology, oasis landscapes, recreation, and the relationship between water and settlement in an arid environment.

    139 Poplar Secret Road

The 139 Poplar Secret Road (139胡杨秘境自驾公路) is aimed particularly at self-drive travelers.

It passes through landscapes where desert, poplar forest, river channels, and open roads create one of Aksu's most distinctive road-trip experiences.

October is generally the most attractive period for golden poplar scenery.

    Awat County and Dolan Culture

Awat County (阿瓦提县) is strongly associated with Dolan culture, including music, dance, folk traditions, food, and local community life.

    Dolan Tribe Scenic Area

The Dolan Tribe Scenic Area (刀郎部落景区) is the county's signature attraction and is officially listed as a National 4A scenic area.

Visitors can experience cultural performances, local food, traditional activities, folk exhibitions, and interpretations of Dolan heritage.

For travelers interested in southern Xinjiang's living culture rather than archaeological sites alone, Awat provides an important addition to an Aksu itinerary.

Wushi County: Springs, Forests and Western Aksu Landscapes

Wushi lies toward the western side of the prefecture and offers a greener landscape influenced by mountain water and oasis environments.

    Seabuckthorn Forest Scenic Area

The Seabuckthorn Forest Scenic Area (沙棘林旅游景区) protects extensive natural vegetation and is one of the county's best-known ecological attractions.

It is included in Xinjiang's official National 4A attraction listings.

    Yanquanshan Scenic Area

Yanquanshan Scenic Area (燕泉山景区) combines springs, mountain scenery, local recreation, and oasis landscapes.

Official Aksu tourism routes have traditionally paired Yanquanshan with the seabuckthorn forest and Wensu's Tianshan mountain attractions.

Kalpin County: Ancient Cities and Desert Landscapes

Kalpin is one of the less-visited parts of Aksu, making it particularly attractive to travelers interested in archaeological landscapes and self-drive exploration.

    Qilan Ancient City

Qilan Ancient City (齐兰古城) preserves traces of an ancient settlement associated with the Silk Road and the historical development of western Aksu.

It was officially approved as a National 4A Tourist Attraction in 2023.

The wider Kalpin landscape also includes dry mountains, desert environments, red-rock formations, and traditional settlements.

Best Aksu Attractions by Travel Interest

    For First-Time Visitors

A strong first journey should combine Kuqa + Wensu + one Tarim Basin cultural or ecological destination.

The essential attractions are Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon, Kuqa Old Town, Subashi, Kizilgaha, Kizil Caves, and Tomur Grand Canyon.

This combination provides the clearest introduction to Aksu's two defining themes: Qiuci civilization and Tianshan landscapes.

    For Silk Road and Archaeology

Focus on Kizil Caves, Subashi Buddhist Temple Ruins, Kizilgaha Beacon Tower, Tang Anxi Protectorate Cultural Park, Kuqa Old Town, and Aksu Prefecture Museum.

A four- or five-day cultural route through Kuqa, Baicheng, and Xinhe is considerably more rewarding than visiting these sites as isolated attractions.

    For Nature and Geology

Choose Tomur Grand Canyon, Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon, the Tomur Peak region, Ta Village, desert badlands, and the Tarim River landscapes.

These destinations reveal the remarkable transition from glacier-covered Tianshan peaks to some of the driest desert landscapes in China.

    For Autumn Photography

The strongest autumn destination is the Tarim River and poplar-forest region of Shaya, particularly from October into early November depending on annual weather.

Mountain landscapes around Wensu and the historic streets of Kuqa can easily be added to the same photography trip.

    For Folk Culture

Prioritize Dolan Tribe in Awat, Jiayi Village in Xinhe, Kuqa Old Town, Qiuci Alley, traditional markets, and village experiences.

This route shifts the focus from monuments toward music, crafts, food, dance, architecture, and contemporary community life.

    For Self-Drive Travel

Aksu is particularly strong for road trips. Recommended self-drive areas include the Duku Highway's Kuqa section, Tomur Grand Canyon, Shaya's poplar roads, Wushi, Kalpin, and the mountain villages of Wensu.

Distances are large, so fuel, water, navigation, weather, and vehicle condition should always be checked before entering remote areas.

Best Time to Visit Aksu Attractions

    Season Best Areas Main Experiences
Spring: April–May Kuqa, Baicheng, Xinhe, Aksu City Archaeology, old towns, Silk Road culture, comfortable sightseeing
Summer: June–August Wensu, Tomur region, Duku Highway Mountain landscapes, canyon travel, summer escapes
Autumn: September–October Shaya, Kuqa, Wensu, Awat Poplar forests, photography, cultural travel
Late Autumn: Late October–early November Tarim River and Shaya Peak golden poplar landscapes
Winter: December–March Aksu City, Kuqa, selected cultural sites Museums, old towns, winter landscapes and fewer visitors

For a first comprehensive journey, May to June and September to October provide the best balance of temperatures, road access, canyon sightseeing, heritage exploration, and photography.

    Planning an Aksu Attractions Route

Aksu Prefecture is extremely large, so attractions should be grouped geographically rather than treated as day trips from Aksu City.

For Qiuci and Silk Road culture, base yourself in Kuqa and connect Kuqa Old Town → Subashi → Kizilgaha → Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon → Baicheng Kizil Caves → Xinhe.

For mountains and geology, use Aksu City or Wensu as the gateway to Tomur Grand Canyon → Ta Village → mountain and forest areas.

For Tarim River and desert ecology, travel through Shaya → poplar forests → Tarim River wetlands → 139 Poplar Secret Road, ideally during autumn.

For folk culture, combine Awat Dolan Tribe → Aksu City → Xinhe Jiayi Village → Kuqa Old Town.

Official Aksu tourism planning has consistently promoted these same broad clusters: the Tomur World Natural Heritage tourism area, the Qiuci World Cultural Heritage area, and the Aksu oasis–Dolan–desert ecological tourism belt.

What makes Aksu exceptional is the scale of its contrasts: glaciers above the Tianshan Mountains, red canyons below the snow peaks, Buddhist murals in desert grottoes, ancient beacon towers beside Silk Road routes, golden poplar forests along the Tarim River, Uyghur neighborhoods in Kuqa, Dolan music in Awat, and traditional instrument makers in Xinhe. Few regions in Xinjiang combine natural landscapes and Silk Road cultural heritage with such variety.
