Located where the Jinsha River and Min River meet to form the Yangtze River, Yibin (宜宾) combines dramatic river scenery, historic streets, famous baijiu culture, bamboo-covered mountains and remarkable karst landscapes. The city is often described through four essential experiences: seeing the rivers, exploring ancient towns, walking through bamboo forests and discovering local liquor culture.
The key to planning a successful Yibin tour is understanding that its attractions are divided between the central city and several widely separated outer areas. Downtown sights can be combined within one or two days, while Lizhuang Ancient Town (李庄古镇), Shunan Bamboo Sea (蜀南竹海) and Xingwen Stone Sea (兴文石海) should generally be treated as separate touring zones. Yibin authorities consistently identify these places, together with Hejiangmen and Guanying Ancient Street, as the city’s major visitor areas.

Main Travel Areas in Yibin
Central Yibin: Rivers, Old Streets and Liquor Culture
Central Yibin is built around its rivers. Hejiangmen Square (合江门广场) is one of the best places to observe the meeting of the Jinsha and Min rivers and the beginning of the Yangtze. The waterfront is particularly attractive around sunset, when the bridges, riverbanks and city skyline begin to illuminate.
Nearby Guanying Ancient Street (冠英古街) preserves the atmosphere of an old southern Sichuan neighbourhood through traditional-style buildings, courtyards, teahouses, restaurants and local snack shops. Hejiangmen, Guanying Ancient Street and the surrounding waterfront have become important components of Yibin’s modern urban cultural landscape.
Cuiping Mountain Park (翠屏山公园) offers a different perspective. Its wooded slopes provide elevated city views and a quieter environment away from the commercial centre. Visitors can combine the park with cultural and religious sites on the mountain, although opening arrangements for individual buildings may vary.
Yibin is also closely associated with Wuliangye (五粮液) and Chinese baijiu culture. The Wuliangye area is frequently included in city sightseeing programs, but access to production-related areas, exhibitions and guided experiences may require advance registration. Confirm current visitor arrangements before adding it to a fixed itinerary.
Lizhuang Ancient Town: Architecture and Wartime History
Situated on the southern bank of the Yangtze River, Lizhuang Ancient Town is about 19 kilometres east of central Yibin. The town has a recorded administrative history of nearly 1,500 years and retains traditional temples, guild halls, alleys and historic buildings associated with its development during the Ming and Qing periods.
Lizhuang is especially significant because it provided refuge for Chinese universities, research institutions and scholars during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Its historical story is therefore deeper than that of a typical commercial ancient town. Cultural travellers should allow time for the former institutional sites, historic residences and exhibitions rather than visiting only the food streets.
The old town is pleasant during the day, but its atmosphere changes after sunset. Yueliangtian Scenic Area (月亮田景区) uses waterways, bridges, traditional architecture and evening illumination to create one of Yibin’s most attractive night-tour environments. Recent visitor patterns show that Lizhuang has developed into a major evening destination, particularly during weekends and public holidays.
Allow at least half a day, arriving in the afternoon and remaining until after the lights come on. Staying overnight is worthwhile for travellers who prefer a quieter walk after the day-trip crowds leave.
Shunan Bamboo Sea: Yibin’s Essential Natural Attraction
Located mainly in Changning County, Shunan Bamboo Sea is a large mountain scenic area covered by extensive bamboo forests. Its landscapes include forested ridges, lakes, waterfalls, streams, caves, temples and elevated viewpoints. The attraction is spread across a wide area rather than concentrated around a single entrance.
Popular areas include Emerald Corridor (翡翠长廊), Wangyou Valley (忘忧谷), Sea in the Sea (海中海), Fairy Lake (仙女湖) and elevated bamboo-viewing platforms. Sea in the Sea is a lake surrounded by bamboo-covered slopes, while the Fairy Lake area can be combined with Xianyu Cave and Tianbao Village as part of a scenic loop.
Because the scenic area is large, visitors should avoid trying to cover every attraction. Select several representative stops and use the official internal transportation system where appropriate. A private vehicle is convenient, but drivers should study the scenic map and confirm one-way roads, parking points and entrance restrictions.
One full day is the minimum recommended time. Travellers interested in photography, hiking or a quieter forest experience should stay overnight near the scenic area and visit popular sections early the following morning.
Xingwen Stone Sea: Karst, Sinkholes and Caves
Xingwen Stone Sea in Xingwen County presents a completely different landscape from the Bamboo Sea. It brings together an extensive surface stone forest, a major natural sinkhole and a large cave system, creating one of southern Sichuan’s most distinctive karst destinations. The area has been described as a natural museum of karst geology.
The main experience usually combines the surface stone formations, panoramic sinkhole viewpoints and the underground Tianquan Cave area. The caves remain cool and damp throughout much of the year, so visitors should bring a light outer layer even during summer. Paths and steps may be slippery after rain or in humid cave sections.
Xingwen is also associated with Bo and Miao cultural traditions, adding an ethnic and historical dimension to the geological landscape. The area’s landscapes and cultural elements received renewed national attention in 2026.
Allow four to six hours inside the scenic area, excluding travel time. Combining Xingwen Stone Sea and Shunan Bamboo Sea in one day is not recommended because both attractions are extensive and require significant road travel.
Recommended Yibin Itineraries
Two-Day Yibin City and Ancient Town Tour
Day 1: Liquor Culture, Mountain Views and the Yangtze Waterfront
Begin with the Wuliangye cultural area, subject to confirmed visitor access. Continue to Cuiping Mountain Park for a walk and elevated views over the city.
In the late afternoon, return to the riverside and explore Hejiangmen Square. Remain until dusk to see the riverfront lighting, then walk through Guanying Ancient Street for dinner and local snacks. This arrangement keeps the day geographically compact and avoids unnecessary travel across the city.
Day 2: Lizhuang Ancient Town and Yueliangtian Night Views
Travel to Lizhuang in the morning and explore the historic streets, temples, wartime cultural sites and traditional architecture. Have lunch in the town and try Lizhuang sliced pork, one of Yibin’s best-known regional dishes.
Spend the afternoon around the riverfront and newer cultural areas. Remain for the evening illumination at Yueliangtian before returning to central Yibin or staying overnight in the ancient town.
Three-Day Classic Yibin Tour
Day 1: Central Yibin
Visit the Wuliangye area, Cuiping Mountain, Hejiangmen and Guanying Ancient Street. Finish with the riverside night view.
Day 2: Lizhuang Ancient Town
Explore Lizhuang’s historic architecture and wartime cultural heritage, followed by local food and the Yueliangtian evening scenery.
Day 3: Shunan Bamboo Sea
Leave early for the Bamboo Sea. Select a practical combination of forest corridors, waterfalls, lakes and panoramic viewpoints instead of attempting every attraction. Return to Yibin in the evening or stay overnight near the scenic area.
Four-Day Yibin Nature and Culture Tour
Follow the three-day itinerary and add Xingwen Stone Sea on Day 4. Concentrate on the surface stone forest, sinkhole viewpoint and cave system before returning to Yibin.
For more comfortable logistics, travellers may stay in Xingwen County the night before or after the visit rather than making two long transfers from central Yibin.
Transportation and Getting Around
Yibin is connected with major cities in Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou and Yunnan by high-speed rail and expressways. Rail routes and station assignments continue to develop, so travellers should select the station according to the actual train service and hotel location rather than relying only on the station name.
Within the urban area, taxis, ride-hailing services, buses and Yibin’s ART transit system provide practical connections. The city adjusts ART services around high-speed-train schedules during major travel periods.
For Hejiangmen, Guanying Ancient Street, Cuiping Mountain and other central attractions, taxis are usually the easiest choice. For Lizhuang, Shunan Bamboo Sea and Xingwen Stone Sea, a private car, chartered vehicle or organised tour offers greater flexibility.
During national holidays, roads around the old city, commercial districts and major scenic areas can become congested. Official traffic notices specifically identify central streets and the roads serving major attractions as potential bottlenecks.

Yibin Food Guide
Yibin ranmian (宜宾燃面) is the city’s signature noodle dish, prepared with a dry, aromatic mixture of chilli oil, sesame, peanuts or walnuts, preserved vegetables and seasonings. It is usually more fragrant and less soup-based than many other Sichuan noodles.
In Lizhuang, try Lizhuang sliced pork (李庄白肉), known for thin knife-cut slices served with a strongly seasoned dipping sauce. Other local favourites include lianggao (凉糕), huangba (黄粑), bean-curd rice and baba shao barbecue (把把烧).
The most famous restaurant is not always the best choice. Small neighbourhood restaurants with a steady local clientele often offer a more authentic experience. Ask for reduced chilli in advance if you are sensitive to spicy food, although some sauces and prepared seasonings may already contain chilli.
Best Time to Visit Yibin
Spring and autumn generally provide the most comfortable conditions for city walks, ancient-town visits and outdoor sightseeing. Summer is hot and humid, but it is also a popular period for the shaded Bamboo Sea and the cool cave environment at Xingwen Stone Sea.
Rainfall can make bamboo-forest paths, stone steps and cave floors slippery. Thunderstorms may also cause temporary restrictions at mountain attractions, so weather conditions should be checked before departure. Yibin periodically issues thunderstorm and heavy-weather alerts during the warmer months.
Winter is quieter and suitable for food, culture and urban sightseeing, although bamboo scenery may feel less vibrant and mountain mornings can be cold and damp.
Essential Yibin Travel Tips
Do not plan too many outer attractions on the same day. Shunan Bamboo Sea and Xingwen Stone Sea each deserve a separate full day.
Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes. This is particularly important in cave areas, on wet bamboo trails and along old stone streets.
Avoid driving into central historic areas or Lizhuang during major holidays when possible. Use designated visitor parking areas and continue by shuttle or on foot.
Reserve enough time for the Bamboo Sea. The distances between internal attractions are greater than they appear on a simple tourist map.
Check current admission, transport and reservation arrangements shortly before travelling. Scenic-area operating hours, internal buses, performances and night activities may change because of weather, maintenance or seasonal schedules.
At Hejiangmen and Lizhuang, plan for both daylight and evening. Arriving too late means missing the historical buildings, while leaving too early means missing some of Yibin’s best night scenery.
How to Plan the Best Yibin Tour
The most efficient Yibin itinerary follows a simple sequence: central city first, Lizhuang second and one major natural attraction per additional day. This reduces backtracking and keeps the pace comfortable.
A two-day trip should focus on the riverside city and Lizhuang. A three-day trip should add Shunan Bamboo Sea. A four-day itinerary can include Xingwen Stone Sea, while five days allows an overnight stay in the countryside and a more relaxed experience.
Yibin should not be treated as a checklist destination. Its appeal comes from the contrast between broad rivers, fragrant baijiu, lively noodles, quiet bamboo forests, historic academic heritage and immense underground landscapes. Travelling slowly for three or four days provides a much richer experience than rushing through every famous attraction.
