Yibin is a transportation hub in southern Sichuan province, which is famous for its comprehensive three-dimensional transportation network of water, land and air. It is connected by four high-speed railways, 12 highways and 17 air routes. Besides, there are more than 10 rivers cruising in Yibin with a 96.3 km cruising range. Yibin is also connected to Chongqing and Chengdu by rail and express highway. Yibin's proximity to Yunnan and Guizhou borders also means that transportation to the provinces is available by rail and by bus.
Yibin (宜宾市) is an important transport gateway in southern Sichuan, connecting the Sichuan Basin with Yunnan, Guizhou and the upper Yangtze River region. Its transport system combines high-speed rail, aviation, expressways, buses, intelligent rail transit and river freight.
Central Yibin is relatively easy to explore by bus, ART and taxi. However, attractions in Changning, Xingwen, Pingshan, Junlian and other outer counties are widely dispersed, making high-speed rail plus local transfer or private road transport more practical.
At the end of 2025, Yibin had 27,486 kilometres of public roads, including 596 kilometres of expressways, 432 kilometres of operating railway and 35 civil-aviation routes. Rail handled approximately 19.66 million passenger journeys during the year, while air travel accounted for about 2.09 million journeys.

Arriving by High-Speed Train
High-speed rail is generally the most convenient way to reach Yibin from Chengdu, Chongqing, Guiyang, Kunming and other cities in southwest China. Travellers should choose the station according to their final destination rather than selecting “Yibin” without checking its location.
Yibin Station (宜宾站) is the principal newer rail hub and is useful for central Yibin, Xuzhou District and connections on the Chengdu–Yibin and Chongqing–Kunming corridors. By late 2025, it was handling dozens of daily train services and had become one of the city’s busiest passenger gateways.
Yibin West Station (宜宾西站) serves the Chengdu–Guiyang high-speed railway and remains convenient for the western and southern urban districts. It is directly connected with the T1 ART line, making transfers towards the old city, Sanjiang New Area and university districts relatively straightforward.
Other useful stations include:

Arriving by Air
Yibin Wuliangye Airport (宜宾五粮液机场) is located in Cuiping District. In 2025, it served 35 routes and handled more than two million passenger journeys, making it an important regional airport for southern Sichuan. Yibin Caiba Airport offers flights to Beijing, Guangzhou, Guiyang, Hangzhou, Kunming, Lhasa, Sanya, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Xi'an and Yichang. Located in the town of Caiba in Cuiping District, the airport is a dual-use military and civil airport serving the city of Yibin. The new Yibin Wuliangye Airport is scheduled to put into service in July 2019, with a 30 percent increase in air routes and more international routes.
Airport buses, taxis and ride-hailing vehicles connect the terminal with central Yibin and the main railway districts. A private transfer is preferable for passengers continuing directly to Changning, Nanxi, Jiang’an or another outer county, especially when travelling with luggage.
Flight destinations and frequencies change seasonally. Chengdu Tianfu, Chongqing Jiangbei and Luzhou Yunlong airports can also serve as alternatives when direct Yibin flights are unavailable, although additional rail or road transfers are required.
Arriving by Road
Yibin’s expressway system connects the city with Chengdu, Chongqing, Zigong, Luzhou, Leshan, Zhaotong and other destinations in Sichuan and neighbouring provinces. Main county towns can generally be reached by expressway or good national and provincial roads.
Long-distance coaches remain important for Jiang’an, Gao County, Gongxian and Junlian, where railway access is less useful for ordinary visitors. Coach timetables may be reduced in the evening, so travellers should avoid assuming that late return services are available.
Water Transport
Because the Jinsha river and Minjiang river converged into Yangtze River here, so Yibin is also called “the first city along the Yangtze river”. Travellers can take the passenger ferry from Leshan to Yibin, or travel to Yibin from Luzhou and Chongqing by water. Yibin Port is a major upper-Yangtze logistics centre. In 2025, the city’s major ports handled about 10.37 million tonnes of cargo and 138,100 TEU of containers. Its importance is mainly commercial: regular passenger river transport is not a primary way for tourists to enter or explore Yibin.
Getting Around Central Yibin
Yibin ART
Yibin uses an Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit system, commonly called ART or intelligent rail transit. The vehicles follow virtual road markings rather than conventional steel railway tracks.
By April 2026, Yibin was operating the T1, T2 and T4 lines, covering approximately 87.9 kilometres across the old city, Cuiping, Xuzhou, Sanjiang New Area and Nanxi.
| Line |
Main Function for Visitors |
| T1 |
Connects Yibin West Station with central districts, Sanjiang New Area and university areas |
| T2 |
Serves Baixi, western urban neighbourhoods and the old-city area around Daguanlou |
| T4 |
Links Sanjiang New Area and eastern Yibin with Nanxi District |
The extension of T2 to Daguanlou Station (大观楼站) opened in January 2026, improving access between Baixi and the historic commercial centre.
ART is useful for long urban journeys but does not directly reach most mountain attractions. Visitors normally combine it with buses, taxis or scenic-area transfers.
Public Buses and Tourist Services
There are 12 expressways intersecting at Yibin. More are under construction and to be constructed. There are four main bus stations serving in the city proper: The New Bus Station, Beimen (North Gate) Bus Station, Ximen (West Gate) Bus Station and Nan'an Bus Station. Beimen (North Gate) Bus Station and Ximen (West Gate) Bus Station has daily long-distance bus to Sichuan province and other major cities in China. Tourists can take the bus to Chengdu, Chongqing, Zhaotong, etc. City buses cover the railway stations, old city, riverfront districts, Li Zhuang and many residential areas. Tourist services are sometimes added during Spring Festival, Labour Day, National Day and other peak periods.
In early 2026, dedicated Li Zhuang tourist routes connected the ancient town with Yibin West Station, Wuliangye and other urban departure points. These special services may operate only during selected holidays, so current schedules should be checked before travel.
Bus route numbers and departure intervals can change. Chinese navigation applications such as Amap generally provide more reliable real-time information than old online travel articles.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and ride-hailing vehicles are widely available in the central districts and around major railway stations. They are useful for short journeys between ART stops, hotels, riverfront areas and attractions.
Availability becomes less reliable in remote counties and mountain villages. When travelling to an isolated attraction, arrange the return vehicle before leaving the county town.

Shunan Bamboo Sea
Shunan Bamboo Sea (蜀南竹海) is approximately 58 kilometres from central Yibin and occupies a large mountain area in Changning County. Travellers can take a train to Changning Station and continue by taxi or transfer vehicle, but self-driving or an organised tour is often more efficient for groups.
The scenic area is too large to explore entirely on foot. Internal sightseeing buses connect major sections, although temporary closures and operating arrangements can change.
During busy holidays, private vehicles may require advance entry reservations. When vehicle capacity is reached, visitors must park at the new visitor centre and transfer to scenic buses.
Xingwen Stone Sea
Xingwen Stone Sea (兴文石海) lies about 126 kilometres from central Yibin and approximately 68 kilometres from Shunan Bamboo Sea.
The most convenient public-transport combination is high-speed rail to Xingwen Station followed by the scheduled scenic tourist shuttle. During the 2026 peak season, timed transfers operated between the station and the attraction, including return services for later visitors. These schedules should be reconfirmed for the actual travel date.
Li Zhuang Ancient Town
Li Zhuang is relatively close to the city and can be reached by public bus, holiday tourist line, taxi or self-driving. During major holidays, additional car parks and shuttle vehicles are introduced to reduce congestion near the historic core.
Parking outside the pedestrian area and completing the final section on foot is usually easier than trying to drive close to the old streets.
Self-Driving in Yibin
Self-driving is the most practical option for combining Shunan Bamboo Sea, Xingwen Stone Sea, Jiang’an, Gongxian or Junlian. Main expressways and national roads are generally suitable for ordinary passenger cars, but rural mountain roads may be narrow, winding and steep.
Heavy summer rain can cause fog, falling rocks or temporary road restrictions. Avoid driving unfamiliar mountain roads after dark or immediately following prolonged rainfall.
International visitors holding an overseas driving licence must obtain an appropriate Chinese driving licence or temporary driving permit before driving. Short-term visitors with a valid overseas licence may apply for a temporary permit, generally valid for three months.
Cycling in Yibin
Central Yibin’s riverfront parks and relatively level urban roads are suitable for short recreational rides. Shared bicycles are useful for connections between parks, commercial districts and river viewpoints, but their operating zones may not extend into rural areas.
Experienced cyclists can explore rural roads in Cuiping, Xuzhou, Changning and Jiang’an. Mountain routes offer attractive scenery but include long climbs, rapid descents and mixed traffic.
Cyclists should carry lights, reflective clothing, rain protection, drinking water and basic repair tools. Rural tunnels and shaded bamboo roads can remain dark and wet even during the daytime.
Motorcycle Touring
Yibin’s county and mountain roads are popular for motorcycle touring, especially around Pingshan, Gongxian, Junlian and southern Changning. Riders should use permitted national, provincial and county roads.
Motorcycles are prohibited from entering expressways in Sichuan Province. Route-planning applications must therefore be set to avoid expressways, otherwise they may direct riders towards a prohibited toll entrance.
Riders need the correct Chinese motorcycle licence, vehicle registration and insurance. Helmets are compulsory, and temporary restrictions may apply around crowded attractions or during severe weather.
Practical Yibin Transportation Tips
Book the railway station closest to the final destination. Yibin Station and Yibin West are not interchangeable, while Changning, Xingwen and Pingshan stations can eliminate substantial road transfers.
Do not plan Shunan Bamboo Sea and Xingwen Stone Sea as short urban excursions. They are large, distant destinations and are better treated as separate full-day visits.
Check the final scenic shuttle before beginning an afternoon visit. County buses and tourism services often stop earlier than central-city public transport.
During national holidays, expect vehicle reservations, peripheral parking and mandatory scenic shuttles at Shunan Bamboo Sea and other popular areas.
For a city-only visit, use ART, buses and taxis. For Changning or Xingwen, combine high-speed rail with local transfer. For several southern counties or remote mountain attractions, a private car with a licensed driver provides the most efficient and reliable solution.
