Yibin (宜宾), known as the First City on the Yangtze River, has a festival calendar shaped by river culture, baijiu traditions, bamboo landscapes and the customs of Miao and Yi communities. Major celebrations range from Lunar New Year light shows and spring folk fairs to Dragon Boat races, summer music events, harvest activities and ethnic festivals in Xingwen, Gong County and Pingshan.
In 2026, Yibin gained exceptional national attention as a venue for China Media Group’s Spring Festival Gala. The city used this opportunity to develop seasonal performances, cultural markets and interactive tourism experiences that continued beyond the holiday itself.
Spring Festivals: New Year Celebrations, Tea and Folk Culture
Yibin’s spring festival season begins with the Lunar New Year. The 2026 Follow the Spring Festival Gala to Yibin (跟着春晚游宜宾) programme introduced five major themes: the Spring Festival Gala photo route, the Harmonious Spring Banquet, the Three-River Light Show, public sailing activities and the Yangtze River Temple Fair. Twelve themed photo locations remained available from February 17 to May 5, while the Spring Banquet at the 501 Chinese Baijiu Cultural Landmark recreated the southern Sichuan custom of inviting relatives and neighbours to a communal New Year meal.
March brings tea-picking, flower viewing, bamboo-shoot harvesting and countryside study activities. One of the most distinctive events is the Jiusi Wenchang Fair (九丝文昌会) in Xingwen County. Held from March 18 to 20 in 2026, it combined the provincial intangible-heritage Bodao Wooden-Platform Iron-Pole Performance, village theatre, ceremonial processions, traditional worship and rural markets.
The Miao Flower Mountain Festival (苗族花山节) is another spring highlight. The 2026 heritage presentation took place at Xingwen Stone Sea on April 28, featuring formal-costume gatherings, lusheng music, dancing and traditional performances.
Summer Festivals: Dragon Boats, Food and Mountain Retreats
The Dragon Boat Festival is one of Yibin’s most active seasonal celebrations. In Changning County, the 17th Dragon Boat Race was held on the Yujiang River on June 17–18, 2026. Twenty-four teams participated alongside dragon-eye-dotting ceremonies, bamboo fashion displays, zongzi making, sachet embroidery and bamboo-food exhibitions.
Jiang’an County combines boat racing with rural food tourism. Its 2026 Dragon Boat and Dragon-Board Carnival at Tiantang Lake included 22 dragon-boat teams and 24 dragon-board teams. The celebrations continued in Simian Mountain Town with a four-day crayfish, beer and countryside tourism week, including a large communal crayfish banquet.
From July to September, urban waterfronts and major scenic areas generally organise summer concerts, night markets, food events and family programmes. Shunan Bamboo Sea and Xingwen Stone Sea are particularly suitable festival bases because their forests and caves offer relief from Yibin’s humid summer heat.
Autumn Festivals: Harvests, Sport and Miao New Year
Autumn brings harvest celebrations, tea and agricultural markets, public cultural performances and outdoor sporting events. The Yibin First City on the Yangtze Marathon (宜宾长江首城马拉松) has become an important city event linking sport with riverfront tourism. The 2025 edition was held in October, while future dates should be checked through the annual official announcement.
In the Miao communities of Gong and Xingwen counties, the tenth lunar month is associated with Miao New Year gatherings, market fairs, lusheng dancing and visits between villages. The rare Benggu or Drum-Stretching Festival (绷鼓节) in Guandou Miao Ethnic Township involves making and dedicating a new ceremonial drum. The first major modern edition in 2024 brought together Miao groups from Gong County and neighbouring Yunnan communities; because the full drum ceremony may occur only once in many years, it should not be assumed to take place annually.
Winter Festivals: Yi New Year and Lunar New Year Traditions
The most important minority celebration in winter is the Yi New Year (彝族新年) in Pingshan County. Communities in Qingping and Pingbian Yi ethnic townships celebrate family reunion, the harvest and traditional identity through ceremonies, costume displays, wrestling, singing, dancing and Yi food. Local programmes are generally held in November or December, but the exact date varies by community and year.
As the next Lunar New Year approaches, central Yibin again becomes the main festival hub. Hejiangmen, Guanying Ancient Street, Lizhuang Ancient Town, the Wuliangye cultural area and the Three Rivers Eye usually host lighting, performances, markets and holiday attractions. Popular locations can become crowded, especially when major citywide programmes are scheduled.
Ethnic-Minority Festivals in Yibin
Miao Flower Mountain Festival
The Flower Mountain Festival is most strongly associated with Xingwen County, which has a substantial Miao population. Visitors can see silver ornaments, embroidered clothing, lusheng music, group dancing and cultural competitions. It is one of the best festivals for an organised minority-culture tour.
Miao Drum-Stretching Festival
Guandou’s Drum-Stretching Festival commemorates ancestors and expresses wishes for peace and prosperity. Because the full drum-making ceremony is exceptionally rare, travellers should distinguish it from the smaller annual Miao New Year market.
Yi Torch Festival
The Yi Torch Festival (彝族火把节) is traditionally observed around the twenty-fourth day of the sixth lunar month in Pingshan’s Yi communities. Activities may include wrestling, singing, dancing, costume displays and evening bonfires. The scale and location vary each year, so the official county notice should be checked before travel.
Yi New Year
Yi New Year is quieter and more family-centred than the Torch Festival. It focuses on reunion, gratitude, ancestral customs and celebrating the agricultural year. Public programmes provide visitors with a respectful introduction to Yi clothing, music, dance and food.
Festival Travel Planning
For a spring festival tour, combine central Yibin’s Spring Festival Gala sites with Lizhuang Ancient Town, Jiusi’s Wenchang Fair and the Miao Flower Mountain Festival in Xingwen.
A summer journey can connect the Changning Dragon Boat Race with Shunan Bamboo Sea, followed by Jiang’an’s dragon-boat and crayfish events. These programmes require private transport because event venues are spread across different counties.
For an ethnic-culture tour, combine Xingwen’s Miao communities, Guandou Miao Ethnic Township in Gong County and the Yi villages of Pingshan. A guide familiar with local customs is recommended, especially for ceremonies that are community traditions rather than commercial performances.
