Leshan Giant Buddha is the must-see highlight of Leshan City. For centuries, it have been revered with Mount Emei by visitors from near and far for their intrinsic value as Buddist heritage sites. Notable scenic resorts in the surrounding area are: Wutongqiao (nicknamed 'Small West Lake') which is an ancient waterside town; Lingyun Temple Museum located on Linyun Mountain, Luocheng Ancient Town which is well-known for its ship like appearance. Moreover, the city is the hometown of Guo Moruo (1892-1978) who a famous Chinese literary figure and you can visit The Former Residence of Guo Moruo.
Located in southwestern Sichuan Province, Leshan is one of China’s most important cultural and natural tourism destinations. Historically known as Jiading or Jiazhou, the city developed around the confluence of the Min, Qingyi and Dadu rivers, creating a distinctive landscape of mountains, waterways, historic neighborhoods and Buddhist monuments. Its tourism identity is dominated by Mount Emei and the Leshan Giant Buddha, which together form the UNESCO World Heritage property “Mount Emei Scenic Area, including Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area.” The property was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1996 for both cultural and natural values.
Beyond these internationally known landmarks, Leshan has developed a much broader tourism network extending into its ancient towns, industrial heritage sites, spectacular river canyons, bamboo forests, tea-growing areas and Yi ethnic regions. Current municipal planning describes a citywide tourism structure centered on the Mount Emei–Leshan Giant Buddha international tourism area, supported by the Min River heritage corridor, the Dadu River cultural tourism belt, the Greater Emei tourism circle and the Xiaoliangshan tourism circle.
🏞️ Overview of Leshan Tourist Attractions
Leshan’s tourism resources can be summarized as “one sacred mountain, one giant Buddha, three rivers, ancient towns and diverse landscapes.” Mount Emei and the Leshan Giant Buddha form the internationally recognized core, while destinations such as Jiayang–Suoluo Lake, Heizhugou, Jinkouhe Grand Canyon, Muchuan Bamboo Sea, Luocheng Ancient Town and Dongfengyan–Qianfoyan broaden the experience far beyond the central city. Leshan’s 2026 development plans continue to prioritize improvements to Mount Emei and the Giant Buddha while supporting Heizhugou, Jiayang–Suoluo Lake, Jinkouhe Grand Canyon, Dawa Mountain and Muchuan Bamboo Sea as important regional tourism brands.
World Heritage and Buddhist Culture: The Leshan Giant Buddha is a monumental Maitreya image carved directly into the sandstone cliff above the meeting of three rivers. Construction began during the Tang Dynasty in the eighth century, and the statue reaches approximately 71 meters in height. UNESCO identifies it as the outstanding monumental Buddhist sculpture within the Leshan component of the World Heritage property. Mount Emei, meanwhile, developed into one of China’s most important Buddhist sacred mountains and preserves temples, religious art, forests and exceptionally rich biodiversity.
Ancient Water Engineering and Buddhist Grottoes: In Jiajiang County, Dongfengyan represents another internationally recognized heritage system. Built from 1662 onward, it was included in the first group of World Heritage Irrigation Structures in 2014 and remains in active irrigation use. It should be distinguished from UNESCO World Heritage: World Heritage Irrigation Structures are recognized through the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage rather than UNESCO. Nearby Qianfoyan preserves an important group of historic cliff carvings and Buddhist grottoes along the Qingyi River.
Canyons, Forests and Xiaoliangshan Landscapes: Southern and western Leshan become increasingly mountainous. Jinkouhe Grand Canyon, Dawa Mountain, Heizhugou, Mabian Dafengding and Muchuan Bamboo Sea form the core of Leshan’s nature-oriented tourism. The city’s newest strategic planning specifically groups Heizhugou, Dafengding, Jinkouhe Grand Canyon and Muchuan Bamboo Sea into the Xiaoliangshan cultural tourism circle, focusing on ecology, ethnic culture, outdoor recreation and geological landscapes.
Industrial Heritage and Historic Towns: Leshan also offers experiences rarely found in conventional Sichuan itineraries. The Jiayang narrow-gauge railway runs through the historic mining landscape around Bagou and Suoluo Lake, while Luocheng Ancient Town is famous for its unusual boat-shaped street. In Wutongqiao, former industrial sites and salt-production culture add another layer to the city’s heritage, and local tourism programs now connect the historic Yongli Sichuan Factory area with the Ding Youjun Memorial Hall and traditional food districts.
