Located in Daocheng County, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, Daocheng Yading (稻城亚丁) is one of the most celebrated high-altitude destinations in western China. Its landscape combines sacred snow mountains, glacial lakes, alpine meadows, forests, rivers and traditional Tibetan villages in the central Hengduan Mountains. Yading is both a national nature reserve and a national 5A-rated tourist attraction, receiving the 5A designation in 2020.
The core scenic area is centered on the three sacred peaks traditionally known collectively as Nyainbo Konka Risum Gongbo, together with dozens of alpine glacial lakes. Official Yading information describes a protected landscape containing more than ten peaks above 5,000 meters, more than 30 peaks above 4,500 meters and 62 high-mountain glacial lakes, of which Milk Lake, Five-Color Lake and Pearl Lake are the best known.
🏞️ Overview of Daocheng Yading Tourist Attractions
Daocheng Yading's tourism resources can be summarized through four themes: sacred snow mountains, alpine lakes, highland meadows and Tibetan culture. The wider destination also extends north through Daocheng County to Haizi Mountain, traditional villages, red-grass wetlands, archaeological sites and emerging astronomy-related attractions. Daocheng County's current tourism development therefore follows a north–central–south pattern: Haizi Mountain in the north, archaeology and astronomy around central Daocheng, and Yading in the south.
Three Sacred Snow Mountains: The spiritual and visual heart of Yading consists of Yangmaiyong, Xiannairi and Xianuoduoji, traditionally associated respectively with Manjushri, Avalokitesvara and Vajrapani in Tibetan Buddhism. Older tourism materials commonly list their elevations as 5,958 m, 6,032 m and 5,958 m, but China's updated national mountain measurements published in 2023 give Yangmaiyong at 6,033.0 m, Xiannairi at 5,998.5 m and Xianuoduoji at 5,951.3 m. Under the newer measurements, Yangmaiyong—not Xiannairi—is the highest of the three.
Sacred Alpine Lakes: Milk Lake, Five-Color Lake and Pearl Lake form the best-known lake landscapes. Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake lie above 4,500 meters on the demanding high-altitude hiking route, while Pearl Lake provides a more accessible experience below Xiannairi. Official scenic-area information places Five-Color Lake at approximately 4,600 meters.
Alpine Meadows and Forests: Chonggu Meadow and Luorong Pasture provide the classic transition from forests to open highland scenery. Luorong Pasture is particularly famous for its views toward Yangmaiyong and Xianuoduoji, while Chonggu serves as the main junction between the routes toward Pearl Lake and the deeper valleys of Yading.
Tibetan Culture: Chonggu Monastery, Yading Village and the settlements around Shangri-La Town introduce visitors to the religious and village culture of the southern Kham region. Beyond Yading itself, Daocheng County has numerous traditional Tibetan settlements and six officially listed 3A attractions centered on village culture, wetlands and rural experiences.

🚶 Main Yading Sightseeing Routes
Yading currently organizes its main sightseeing experience around three route concepts: the Avalokitesvara Compassion Route, Manjushri Wisdom Route and Vajrapani Challenge Route. The high-altitude challenge route continues from Gongga Tso toward Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake and is the most physically demanding section.
Avalokitesvara Compassion Route
The Compassion Route is the classic short route for seeing Xiannairi and Pearl Lake. It generally links Zhaguanbeng, Chonggu Monastery, Pearl Lake and Chonggu Meadow and is the most suitable choice for visitors who want the essential Yading experience without undertaking the extreme high-altitude hike. Published route information describes the circuit as roughly 4.5–6 km, depending on the exact walking combination selected.
Manjushri Wisdom Route
The Wisdom Route heads deeper into the valley toward Luorong Pasture and provides the best mainstream views of Yangmaiyong and Xianuoduoji. Part of the route can be covered by scenic electric vehicle, reducing the amount of high-altitude walking required.
Vajrapani Challenge Route
The Vajrapani Challenge Route continues from the Gongga Tso area toward Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake. A 2026 Garze tourism guide describes Gongga Tso–Milk Lake–Five-Color Lake as Yading's most difficult but most dramatic hiking section. Because much of this route lies above 4,500 meters, access may be suspended because of snow, ice, geological hazards, heavy rain or ecological protection requirements.
