  • Chengdu Transportation

Chengdu (成都市) is one of the most important transportation hubs in western China and one of the easiest major Chinese cities for independent travelers to navigate. Its transportation system combines two international airports, multiple high-speed railway stations, an extensive metro network, city buses, tourist shuttle buses, taxis, ride-hailing services, intercity railways, expressways, greenways, and cycling routes. By 2026, Chengdu's operating urban rail network had exceeded 750 kilometers, following the opening of several additional metro lines in 2025.

For international travelers, the basic strategy is simple: use the metro for central Chengdu, rail or tourist buses for major suburban attractions, and private vehicles for ancient towns, mountain areas, countryside destinations, and multi-stop trips. Chengdu's center is generally not a good place for tourists to drive because traffic, parking, pedestrian zones, and one-way streets make public transportation more convenient.

    How to Get to Chengdu

Chengdu is connected with major Chinese and international cities by air and high-speed rail. Travelers arriving from overseas will normally enter through Chengdu Tianfu International Airport or Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, while domestic travelers have several major railway gateways.

    Getting to Chengdu by Air

Chengdu operates a distinctive two-airport system. Tianfu International Airport handles a large share of long-distance and international traffic, while Shuangliu International Airport remains an important aviation hub much closer to the traditional city center.

    Chengdu Tianfu International Airport

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (成都天府国际机场) is located southeast of central Chengdu in the Jianyang area. The airport is approximately 50 kilometers from central Tianfu Square by straight-line distance, so travelers should allow considerably more transfer time than when using Shuangliu Airport.

Metro connections provide the most reliable public transportation between the airport and Chengdu. Metro Line 18 forms one of the principal airport-city links, while Line 19 provides useful connections across southern and western Chengdu and directly links Tianfu and Shuangliu airports. Chengdu continues to expand rail access to Tianfu Airport, including projects designed to improve connections with Chengdu's major railway hubs.

Travelers arriving late at night should check the last metro departure before landing. Airport buses, taxis, and app-based ride-hailing are useful alternatives when the metro has stopped operating.

    Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (成都双流国际机场) is much closer to downtown Chengdu and can therefore be particularly convenient for travelers whose flight schedules allow them to use it.

The airport currently has direct rail access through several metro services. Line 10 serves both airport terminals and now continues through important southwest Chengdu destinations, while Line 19 connects Shuangliu Airport with Tianfu Airport and western Chengdu. Line 30 also serves the Shuangliu Airport transportation area following its opening as part of Chengdu's recent metro expansion.

Travelers transferring between Chengdu's two airports can use Metro Line 19, airport transfer services, taxis, or ride-hailing. The airport authority specifically lists Line 19 as one of the principal transfer options between Shuangliu and Tianfu airports.

    Which Chengdu Airport Is Better?

For travelers staying around Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li, Kuanzhai Alley, Wuhou Shrine, or other central districts, Shuangliu is geographically closer and normally requires less ground travel.

Tianfu Airport, however, offers a larger range of long-haul and international connections. Travelers should therefore choose according to the best flight schedule and fare rather than airport location alone. Always check whether your ticket says TFU for Tianfu or CTU for Shuangliu, especially when arranging airport transfers.

Getting to Chengdu by High-Speed Train

Chengdu is one of western China's most important railway hubs, with fast connections to Chongqing, Xi'an, Kunming, Guiyang, Lanzhou, Wuhan, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and many other destinations.

Railway Station Chinese Name Main Urban Connection Best For
Chengdu East Railway Station 成都东站 Metro Lines 2 and 7 Most high-speed railway travelers
Chengdu South Railway Station 成都南站 Metro Lines 1, 7 and 18 Southern Chengdu and airport connections
Chengdu West Railway Station 成都西站 Metro Lines 4 and 9 Western Chengdu, Chongzhou and regional trips
Chengdu Railway Station 成都站 Metro and urban transport connections Selected regional and long-distance services

    Chengdu East Railway Station

For most international tourists traveling around China by high-speed rail, Chengdu East Railway Station is the most useful arrival point. Metro Line 2 provides a straightforward connection toward Chunxi Road and central Chengdu, while Line 7 makes transfers to other railway stations and districts convenient.

    Chengdu South Railway Station

Chengdu South is particularly convenient for travelers staying in southern Chengdu or continuing toward the airport corridor. Its connection with Metro Line 18 is especially useful for travelers heading toward Tianfu Airport.

    Chengdu West Railway Station

Chengdu West is an important departure station for the western side of the metropolitan region. It can be convenient for journeys toward Chongzhou, Dayi, Qionglai, and other destinations west of central Chengdu, depending on the current railway timetable.

Train schedules change frequently, so visitors should confirm their station carefully when purchasing tickets through China Railway 12306. Chengdu has several major railway stations, and arriving at the wrong one can create substantial delays.

    Getting Around Chengdu by Metro

The Chengdu Metro is the primary transportation system for most tourists. The network now extends far beyond the historic downtown area and connects airports, railway stations, commercial districts, residential areas, universities, and many major attractions. Chengdu's municipal government reported that the city's rail transit operating mileage had surpassed 750 kilometers after additional lines opened in 2025.

Metro services generally begin around early morning and continue until late evening, but exact first and last train times vary by station and line. Airport services and outer suburban sections may have different schedules, so travelers with early flights or late arrivals should check the current timetable.

International visitors can use station ticket machines, transport QR-code systems, and supported mobile payment options. Alipay and WeChat Pay are increasingly useful for urban transportation, while the local Tianfutong transport system is widely used by residents.

    Best Metro Lines for Tourists

Rather than memorizing the entire network, visitors mainly need to know a few corridors. Line 2 connects Chengdu East Railway Station with Chunxi Road and major central districts; Line 3 serves areas useful for Wuhou Shrine and the Panda Base corridor; Line 4 connects Kuanzhai Alley with eastern and western Chengdu; Line 7 functions as an important orbital transfer line; while Lines 18 and 19 are particularly useful for airport and southern metropolitan travel.

Because Chengdu's metro system is expanding rapidly, travelers should rely on the current official metro map or a live navigation app rather than screenshots of older network maps.

    City Buses, Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Chengdu's bus network reaches neighborhoods and attractions that are farther from metro stations. Standard urban buses are inexpensive, but journeys can be slower during morning and evening traffic peaks. Buses are most useful for the final connection between a metro station and an attraction.

Taxis and app-based ride-hailing are widely available. They are particularly useful when traveling with luggage, visiting several attractions together, or returning to a hotel late in the evening. Around Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li, Jiuyanqiao, major railway stations, and popular scenic areas, traffic congestion can make the metro faster than driving during peak periods.

For foreign travelers who cannot read Chinese, saving the Chinese name of the hotel or attraction on the phone makes taxi and ride-hailing journeys considerably easier.

    Transportation to Major Chengdu Attractions

The following table provides practical transportation options for the attractions most commonly visited by international travelers. Routes and special tourist buses can change, so live navigation should always be checked on the travel date.

Attraction Recommended Transportation Alternative Travel Tip

Xiling Snow Mountain Private car/tourist transport Coach Winter weekends can be very busy
Jiezi Ancient Town Private car Rail + taxi Convenient to combine with Chongzhou
Pingle Ancient Town Private car Bus/rail + road transfer Best combined with Qionglai
Tiantai Mountain Private car/tourist coach Rail + road transfer Mountain transfer takes additional time

How to Get to the Chengdu Panda Base

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地) is northeast of the traditional city center. A practical independent route is to use the metro toward the Panda Avenue area and transfer to the designated shuttle or local transport serving the Panda Base.

Tourist direct buses also operate from central tourism areas. Chengdu's airport transportation information currently lists scenic-area direct-bus service points around Chunxi Road, Kuanzhai Alley, Wuhou Shrine, Panda Avenue, the Panda Base, Du Fu Thatched Cottage, and Dujiangyan, although individual departures should be checked before travel.

Arrive early. Morning provides both cooler temperatures and generally better panda activity, while traffic around the base becomes heavier later in the day.

How to Get to Wuhou Shrine and Jinli

Wuhou Shrine Museum (武侯祠博物馆) and Jinli are adjacent and should normally be visited together.

The metro provides easy access through the southwest side of the city center, followed by a short walk. Numerous buses also run along Wuhouci Street, but the metro is usually more predictable during busy periods.

After visiting Wuhou Shrine, simply continue on foot into Jinli rather than arranging another vehicle.

How to Get to Du Fu Thatched Cottage

Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum (杜甫草堂博物馆) is west of the city center. Metro Line 4 provides convenient access to the surrounding area, followed by a walk or short local bus connection.

The attraction can easily be combined with Huanhuaxi Park and Sichuan Museum, creating a compact cultural day without extensive transportation.

How to Get to Wenshu Monastery

Wenshu Monastery (文殊院) is among Chengdu's easiest attractions to reach by public transportation. Metro Line 1 stops close to the monastery and surrounding historic streets.

Once there, walking is the best way to explore the monastery, vegetarian restaurants, traditional snack shops, teahouses, and surrounding lanes.

How to Get to Kuanzhai Alley

Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子) has direct metro access and is best explored entirely on foot after arrival.

The neighborhood also connects well with People's Park, Tianfu Square, and other central attractions, making taxis unnecessary for many travelers unless weather conditions are poor or mobility is limited.

How to Get to Jinsha Site Museum

Jinsha Site Museum (金沙遗址博物馆) has convenient metro access through the surrounding urban rail network, making it one of the easiest archaeological sites in Chengdu to reach independently.

For travelers interested in ancient Shu civilization, Jinsha can be visited in half a day and combined with Du Fu Thatched Cottage or Kuanzhai Alley.

How to Get to Eastern Suburb Memory

Eastern Suburb Memory (东郊记忆) is served directly by Chengdu's metro network and is straightforward to reach from downtown.

Because it is an urban creative district rather than an isolated scenic area, there is little reason to drive. Metro, walking, and bicycle connections work particularly well.

    How to Get to Dujiangyan

For most independent travelers, rail is the easiest way to reach Dujiangyan (都江堰市).

Travel from central Chengdu toward Xipu and connect with the Chengdu–Dujiangyan intercity railway. For the Dujiangyan Irrigation System and Guanxian Ancient Town, Lidui Park Station is generally more convenient than Dujiangyan Railway Station.

Tourist direct buses are another option from central visitor hubs. Chengdu's current scenic-area bus network includes service points associated with Dujiangyan and several central Chengdu attractions.

During weekends and national holidays, rail is often preferable to driving because it avoids congestion on the Chengdu–Dujiangyan road corridor.

How to Get to Mount Qingcheng

Travelers visiting Mount Qingcheng (青城山) can use the Chengdu–Dujiangyan railway corridor and continue from the Qingchengshan area by local transportation.

Before departure, determine whether you are visiting Qingcheng Front Mountain, which is primarily associated with Taoist culture and temples, or Qingcheng Back Mountain, which focuses more on forest scenery, streams, and hiking. They use different local access arrangements and should not be treated as the same entrance.

A Dujiangyan–Mount Qingcheng combination works particularly well as a two-day trip, reducing unnecessary transport backtracking.

Transport to Anren, Xiling Snow Mountain and Western Chengdu

Destinations such as Anren Ancient Town, Xiling Snow Mountain, Huashuiwan, Pingle Ancient Town, Tiantai Mountain, Jiezi Ancient Town, Yuantong Ancient Town, and Daoming Bamboo Art Village are more dispersed than central Chengdu attractions.

Private cars or chauffeured vehicles become increasingly useful in these areas because they allow several attractions to be combined in one day. Public transportation is possible for many destinations, but it often involves a railway or long-distance bus followed by a local taxi or bus transfer.

For a western Chengdu road trip, it is generally better to group destinations geographically rather than returning to downtown Chengdu every evening.

    Chengdu Tourist Direct Buses

Chengdu has developed tourist-oriented direct bus services linking transportation hubs, central tourism districts, and popular attractions. Current airport tourism information lists ticketing or boarding service points at locations including Chunxi Road, Wuhou Shrine, Kuanzhai Alley, Panda Avenue, the Panda Base, Du Fu Thatched Cottage, and Dujiangyan.

These services can be useful for travelers who do not want to manage multiple metro and bus transfers. However, tourist-bus departure points, routes, and frequencies may change seasonally, so they should be treated as a supplement to the metro rather than a fixed timetable that can be planned months in advance.

    Driving in Chengdu

Self-driving is extremely useful for western Chengdu, mountain valleys, ancient towns, rural villages, lakes, and multi-stop family trips, but it is less attractive inside the central urban districts.

Central Chengdu has heavy traffic, complex intersections, restricted parking, pedestrian streets, and busy commercial areas. For attractions around Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li, Kuanzhai Alley, Wenshu Monastery, Wuhou Shrine, and People's Park, leaving the car at the hotel and taking the metro is normally easier.

Driving becomes much more useful once traveling toward Chongzhou, Dayi, Qionglai, Pengzhou, Pujiang, Jianyang, or mountain areas around Dujiangyan.

Chinese public holidays require special caution. Chengdu traffic authorities regularly warn of heavy congestion on major urban exits, ring roads, and expressway corridors during holiday departure peaks.

    Recommended Chengdu Self-Drive Routes

    Western Chengdu Heritage Route

A practical cultural route is Chengdu → Anren Ancient Town → Chongzhou → Yuantong Ancient Town → Jiezi Ancient Town. It combines Republican-era heritage, western Sichuan ancient towns, rural scenery, and local food.

    Mountain and Water Route

For nature-oriented travelers, consider Chengdu → Dujiangyan → Mount Qingcheng → Jiezi Ancient Town, with one or two overnight stays.

    Dayi Winter Route

In winter, Chengdu → Anren → Huashuiwan → Xiling Snow Mountain combines history, hot springs, and snow scenery.

    Qionglai Route

A two-day journey can follow Chengdu → Pingle Ancient Town → Tiantai Mountain, allowing more time for forest scenery and old-town life.

    Cycling in Central Chengdu

Chengdu is particularly suitable for short-distance urban cycling because shared bicycles are widely available and much of the central city is relatively flat.

Cycling works well as a last-mile connection between metro stations and attractions, particularly along rivers, parks, and quieter streets. It can also be more enjoyable than repeatedly entering and leaving metro stations for short journeys.

However, bicycle parking is strictly managed around heavily visited commercial areas such as Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li. Always return shared bicycles to designated parking zones shown in the app.

    Tianfu Greenway and Long-Distance Cycling

Chengdu has developed one of China's largest urban greenway systems. Municipal reporting states that the city has built more than 10,000 kilometers of Tianfu Greenways, creating extensive recreational routes through parks, wetlands, countryside areas, and urban neighborhoods.

One of the best-known cycling projects is the greenway following Chengdu's ring-road corridor. The complete circuit is close to 100 kilometers, making it a serious endurance ride rather than an ordinary sightseeing excursion.

Experienced cyclists may complete the circuit in a full day, but visitors should not underestimate the distance. A helmet, sun protection, water, basic repair equipment, charged phone, and sufficient physical preparation are important.

Short sections of the greenway are far more suitable for ordinary travelers who simply want a relaxed Chengdu cycling experience.

    Leisure Cycling in Wenjiang

Wenjiang (温江区) is particularly suitable for family-friendly and recreational cycling. Greenways along the Jiang'an River and surrounding rural areas are generally flatter and quieter than central Chengdu roads.

These routes work well for beginners, families, and visitors who prefer shade, countryside restaurants, waterways, and slower cycling rather than long-distance endurance riding.

Combining metro travel with local bicycle rental is often easier than taking a bicycle all the way from downtown.

Cycling Around Dujiangyan and Ancient Towns

Dujiangyan, Chongzhou, and Qionglai also offer attractive recreational cycling opportunities. River corridors, rural roads, ancient-town surroundings, and lower mountain foothills provide very different landscapes from central Chengdu.

Cyclists should be cautious about mixing with motor traffic on rural roads and should avoid mountain cycling during heavy rain, when landslides, rockfalls, and slippery surfaces can become significant hazards.

    Motorcycle Travel in Chengdu

Motorcycles can be useful for experienced riders exploring outer Chengdu, countryside areas, mountain roads, and county-level destinations, but they are generally not appropriate for sightseeing within the central urban core.

Chengdu applies specific motorcycle traffic-management restrictions in parts of the urban area. Rules concerning permitted roads, registration, vehicle type, and restricted zones can change, so riders should check the latest Chengdu traffic police regulations before entering the city rather than relying on older statements such as a simple “inside the Third Ring Road” rule.

For international visitors, motorcycle travel also involves Chinese driving-license and vehicle-registration requirements. An international driving permit by itself is generally not a substitute for the legally required Chinese driving authorization, so motorcycle or car rental should only be arranged after confirming eligibility.

Motorcycles must not enter bicycle-only greenways. Riders exploring greenway areas should park legally outside the cycling route and continue by bicycle or on foot.

Transport Planning for Different Parts of Chengdu

    Central Urban Districts

For Jinjiang, Qingyang, Wuhou, Chenghua, Jinniu, and the core commercial districts, use metro + walking as the default combination. Taxis are useful late at night or when carrying luggage, while cycling works well for shorter connections.

Southern Chengdu and Tianfu New Area

Metro is the most convenient option for the Financial City, Global Center, Tianfu New Area, and airport corridor. Lines 18 and 19 are particularly important for longer north–south and airport-related journeys.

    Western Suburbs

For Wenjiang and Pidu, metro coverage is good enough for many urban destinations, while taxis or bicycles can complete the final few kilometers to rural attractions.

    Dujiangyan, Chongzhou and Dayi

Rail works particularly well for reaching the main urban centers, but private transportation becomes more useful when several ancient towns, villages, or mountain attractions are combined.

    Pengzhou and Qionglai

Public transportation can reach the urban centers, but mountain attractions are dispersed. Private cars, organized tours, or chauffeured vehicles are generally the easiest options for international travelers.

    Jianyang and Eastern Chengdu

Rail, metro, and expressways provide increasingly strong connections with Jianyang and Tianfu Airport. A private vehicle remains useful for lakes, countryside areas, and destinations away from major transit corridors.

    Airport and Railway Transfer Tips

Always check the exact airport and railway station before departure. Tianfu Airport and Shuangliu Airport are far apart, and Chengdu East, South, West, and Chengdu Railway Station are also different transportation hubs.

If changing between the two airports, leave generous transfer time even though Metro Line 19 provides a direct connection. The airport authority maintains dedicated transfer guidance because passengers may need to collect and re-check luggage depending on their itinerary.

For high-speed trains, arrive sufficiently early for security and identity-document checks. Foreign travelers should keep the passport used for ticket booking readily accessible.

Useful Transport Apps for International Travelers

For day-to-day navigation, a Chinese mapping app such as Amap/Gaode Maps is extremely useful for metro exits, walking routes, taxis, bus stops, and driving navigation. China Railway 12306 is the authoritative platform for train schedules and tickets, while Alipay and WeChat can support many local transport payments.

Because routes, operating hours, fares, airport buses, tourist buses, and temporary traffic restrictions can change, live navigation is more reliable than copying transportation details from an old travel blog.

    Peak-Hour and Holiday Transport Tips

Chengdu's busiest commuter periods are generally weekday mornings and late afternoons, although the exact congestion pattern varies by district. The metro remains more predictable than taxis during rush hour.

During Chinese New Year, May Day, summer school holidays, and National Day, tourist roads toward Dujiangyan, Mount Qingcheng, the Panda Base, Xiling Snow Mountain, and popular ancient towns can become heavily congested. Railway tickets and tourist transport should be booked early.

Summer travelers should also consider weather conditions. Heavy rain can affect mountain roads and underpasses; Chengdu authorities publish seasonal flood-risk and urban drainage information during the main rainy period.

Best Transportation Strategy for a Chengdu Trip

For most international visitors, the most efficient approach is to divide Chengdu transportation into three levels. Inside central Chengdu, use the metro, walking, and occasional shared bicycles. For major destinations such as Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng, use intercity rail or official tourist transport. For western Chengdu's ancient towns, mountains, rural villages, and multi-stop itineraries, use a private car or chauffeured vehicle.

Avoid renting a car simply to explore downtown Chengdu, where parking and congestion usually outweigh the benefits. Conversely, do not rely exclusively on public buses when planning complicated trips through Chongzhou, Dayi, Qionglai, Pengzhou, or mountain areas, where road transfers can consume a large part of the day.

With its two airports, expanding high-speed railway network, more than 750 kilometers of urban rail, and extensive Tianfu Greenway system, Chengdu is well suited both to car-free city tourism and to longer self-drive journeys across the surrounding plains, ancient towns, and mountains.
