Bazhong Attractions

Located in northeastern Sichuan Province, Bazhong (巴中) is a destination where mountain scenery, karst landscapes, ancient routes, historic towns, Buddhist stone carvings, and revolutionary heritage come together. The municipality consists of Bazhou District, Enyang District, Nanjiang County, Tongjiang County, and Pingchang County, with tourism resources distributed widely across the Daba and Micang mountain regions.

Bazhong is particularly known for four major tourism themes: the spectacular autumn foliage of Guangwu Mountain, the geological landscapes of the Guangwu Mountain–Nuoshui River UNESCO Global Geopark, the historic streets of Enyang Ancient Town, and the extensive revolutionary heritage associated with the Sichuan–Shaanxi Revolutionary Base. Guangwu Mountain and Autumn Red Leaves

Guangwu Mountain Scenic Area (光雾山旅游景区) in Nanjiang County is Bazhong’s flagship attraction and its only national 5A tourist attraction. It is characterized by densely forested mountain ridges, valleys, waterfalls, streams, mist, and extensive autumn foliage. The area is especially famous from October into November, when large sections of the Micang Mountains turn red, orange, and gold. Guangwu Mountain was officially recognized as a national 5A tourist attraction in 2020.

The wider Guangwu Mountain tourism area includes several distinct scenic zones, so travelers should not think of it as a single compact mountain park. Micangshan National Forest Park and Shibayue Tan provide different experiences, with the former particularly famous for forest scenery and autumn colors and the latter for waterfalls, pools, streams, and quiet valley landscapes.

Guangwu Mountain–Nuoshui River UNESCO Global Geopark

The Guangwu Mountain–Nuoshui River UNESCO Global Geopark (光雾山—诺水河世界地质公园) extends across Nanjiang and Tongjiang counties and covers about 1,818 square kilometers. It protects an exceptional combination of karst landforms, caves, geological sections, waterfalls, valleys, forests, and mountain landscapes.

The geopark includes major areas such as Guangwu Mountain, Micang Mountain, Shibayue Tan, Nuoshui River, and Kongshan Tianpen. For travelers interested in geology, caves, geomorphology, and natural history, it is one of Bazhong’s most distinctive tourism resources.

Enyang Ancient Town

Enyang Ancient Town (恩阳古镇) is one of the most important historic settlements in northeastern Sichuan and a national 4A tourist attraction. Located along the historic Micang Ancient Road, the town retains extensive traditional architecture from the Ming and Qing dynasties as well as old streets, courtyards, riverfront spaces, traditional shops, and revolutionary-era sites. Official Bazhong tourism information describes it as containing one of Sichuan’s largest and best-preserved concentrations of Ming- and Qing-era traditional buildings.

The town provides a useful cultural contrast to Bazhong’s mountain attractions and is particularly suitable for walking, photography, traditional food, folk culture, and evening visits.

Sichuan–Shaanxi Revolutionary Heritage

Bazhong was a major center of the Sichuan–Shaanxi Revolutionary Base, making revolutionary history one of the defining elements of the city’s tourism identity.

The most important site is the Sichuan–Shaanxi Revolutionary Base Red Army Martyrs Cemetery at Wangping in Tongjiang County. It is recognized as China’s largest Red Army martyrs cemetery and contains the graves or memorials of 25,048 Red Army martyrs.

Other important revolutionary heritage sites are distributed through Bazhou, Tongjiang, Nanjiang, Enyang, and Pingchang, making Bazhong one of Sichuan’s major destinations for travelers interested in twentieth-century Chinese history.

Bazhou District

The Nankan Mountain area brings several major cultural attractions together, making it the most convenient cultural sightseeing area for travelers staying in central Bazhong.

Nankan Mountain, Shanshui Huahu, Qicai Fokan and Tianma Mountain continue to be identified among Bazhou’s principal visitor attractions in recent local tourism notices.

Enyang District

Enyang District (恩阳区) is centered on the historic Enyang Ancient Town but also has countryside tourism, agricultural landscapes, wellness resorts, river valleys, and newer cultural experiences. It works particularly well as a half-day or full-day excursion from central Bazhong.

Enyang’s current tourism offer extends beyond its ancient town to Wanshou Health Valley, Guanzigou, Konggang Flower Sea and Shenniu Creek.

Nanjiang County

Nanjiang County (南江县) is the natural-tourism heart of Bazhong. It contains Guangwu Mountain, Micang Mountain, Shibayue Tan and several other forest, tea, lake, geological and rural tourism destinations. Travelers interested primarily in scenery should devote the largest share of their Bazhong itinerary to Nanjiang.

Nanjiang is officially promoted around Guangwu Mountain and a cluster of other major scenic areas, including Micang Mountain, Yunding Tea Country and Yuhu–Changtan.

Tongjiang County

Tongjiang County (通江县) combines three of Bazhong’s strongest tourism themes: karst geology, mountain nature and revolutionary history. Nuoshui River and Kongshan Tianpen dominate its natural attractions, while Wangping and the former headquarters of the Fourth Front Army of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army are among its most important historical sites.

The wider UNESCO Global Geopark links Nuoshui River and Kongshan with the Guangwu Mountain landscapes of neighboring Nanjiang, demonstrating why Tongjiang is important for both geological tourism and nature travel.

Pingchang County

Pingchang County (平昌县) is particularly strong in forest scenery, countryside tourism, historic towns, rural landscapes, cultural heritage, and revolutionary history. It receives fewer international visitors than Guangwu Mountain or Tongjiang, making it a useful choice for travelers seeking a quieter experience.

Fotou Mountain, Balingtai and Sima Water Town are among Pingchang’s established 4A attractions, while Nantianmen and Sanshierliang expand the county’s mountain, sports and rural-tourism offer.

Best Areas for First-Time Visitors

For travelers visiting Bazhong for the first time, Nanjiang County should receive the highest priority because it contains Guangwu Mountain, Micang Mountain and Shibayue Tan. Autumn is the most famous season, but the mountain region also offers forest scenery, hiking and summer retreats during other parts of the year. Guangwu Mountain’s extensive autumn foliage remains one of the destination’s defining tourism assets.

Tongjiang County is the best choice for combining natural scenery with history. Nuoshui River provides Bazhong’s strongest cave and karst experience, while Wangping and the Fourth Front Army heritage sites make Tongjiang one of the most important revolutionary-history destinations in Sichuan.

Bazhou and Enyang work well together for cultural sightseeing. Nankan Mountain provides Buddhist art and revolutionary museums close to the urban center, while Enyang Ancient Town introduces travelers to the historic Micang Ancient Road, traditional architecture, local food and old-town life.

Pingchang County is better suited to repeat visitors, self-drive travelers and those interested in quieter countryside tourism.
