Located in eastern Shanxi Province on the western side of the Taihang Mountains, Yangquan (阳泉) is a historic city named after its abundant natural springs. Once known as “Yangquan (漾泉),” meaning a place where springs surged, the city combines spectacular mountain landscapes, ancient passes, traditional villages, revolutionary history, and modern cultural creativity.

The most famous symbol of Yangquan is Niangziguan (娘子关), known as one of the “Nine Great Passes of China.” Located along the ancient Great Wall defense line, the pass combines military history with beautiful natural scenery. Visitors can explore ancient city walls, historic roads, waterfalls, and the unique “Water Town of Niangziguan,” where streams flow through traditional villages.

The Cuifeng Mountain Natural Scenic Area (翠枫山自然风景区) represents the ecological beauty of the Taihang Mountains. With high forest coverage, fresh air, mountain trails, and colorful autumn foliage, it is one of the best destinations around Yangquan for hiking, photography, and summer retreats.

Loyalty Culture and the Legend of Zangshan

Zangshan Mountain (藏山) is one of Yangquan’s most important cultural landmarks and is known as the “First Historical and Cultural Mountain of Shanxi.” The mountain is closely connected with the famous Chinese historical story “The Orphan of Zhao (赵氏孤儿).” According to legend, Zhao Wu, the surviving descendant of the Zhao family, was hidden here during a political conflict, creating a cultural symbol of loyalty, sacrifice, and righteousness.

The Shinaoshan Hundred Regiments Campaign Memorial Site (狮脑山百团大战遗址) was one of the important battlefields of the Hundred Regiments Campaign during the Anti-Japanese War. The memorial halls, monuments, and historical exhibitions allow visitors to learn about wartime history and experience China’s revolutionary heritage.

The Yangquan Memory · 1947 Cultural Park (阳泉记忆·1947文化园) transforms former industrial sites into a cultural tourism destination, preserving the city’s mining and industrial memories while adding creative spaces, exhibitions, and cultural activities.

Traditional Villages and Future Cultural Tourism

Yangquan also preserves unique traditional villages such as Dachang Ancient Village (大汖古村), a historic settlement built along steep cliffs. The layered stone houses and mountain environment have earned it the nickname “the Potala Palace on the Cliff.”

At the same time, Yangquan is developing a new identity as a “Science Fiction City” because it is the hometown of Liu Cixin, author of The Three-Body Problem. This combination of ancient mountain culture and futuristic imagination gives Yangquan a distinctive tourism character.
