Hanzhong (汉中) is a historic city located between the Qinling Mountains to the north and the Bashan Mountains to the south. As the birthplace of Han culture and the source region of the Han River, it is known as the “Birthplace of the Han Dynasty and the Treasure Basin of China.” With a mild climate, rich ecological resources and profound historical heritage, Hanzhong combines ancient Chinese civilization, Three Kingdoms culture, mountain landscapes and rural scenery.

The city is often described through three major themes: Han Dynasty Culture, Three Kingdoms Heritage and Qinba Mountain Wilderness. Two Han Dynasties and Three Kingdoms Heritage

The historical identity of Hanzhong is closely connected with the Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period.

Hanzhong Museum (汉中市博物馆) preserves important historical remains including Ancient Hantai (古汉台), Baijiangtan (拜将坛) and Yinmachang (饮马池). It is one of the best places to understand the rise of the Han Dynasty and houses the famous Shimen Thirteen Inscriptions (石门十三品), regarded as a national treasure of Chinese calligraphy and stone carving.

Shimen Plank Road Scenic Area (石门栈道风景区) is associated with the famous historical story “Repairing the plank road openly while secretly advancing through Chencang.” The scenic area combines the ancient Baoxie Road (褒斜道), Han-era transportation history and the natural landscape of Shimen Reservoir.

The Mian County area preserves some of the most important Three Kingdoms sites in China. Wuhou Tomb (武侯墓) is the burial place of Zhuge Liang, while Wuhou Temple (武侯祠) is considered the earliest and only temple of its kind officially established by imperial decree.

Qinba Mountain Natural Landscapes

The southern Qinling and northern Bashan Mountains create an exceptional ecological environment.

Liping National Forest Park (黎坪国家森林公园) is famous for colorful autumn forests, waterfalls, stone forests and canyon landscapes. It is one of the best destinations in Shaanxi for autumn photography.

Longtoushan Scenic Area (龙头山景区) has become one of Hanzhong's most popular modern mountain attractions, famous for spectacular sea-of-cloud views, high-altitude scenery and winter skiing.

Huayang Scenic Area (华阳景区) is one of the most important ecological destinations in the Qinling Mountains. Visitors may encounter the “Qinling Four Treasures”: giant pandas, crested ibises, golden monkeys and takins.

Ancient Towns and Rural Culture

Hanzhong also offers several traditional towns and villages.

Qingmuchuan Ancient Town (青木川古镇) in Ningqiang County is one of the most famous ancient towns in southern Shaanxi. With preserved Ming, Qing and Republic-era buildings, it became widely known after the TV drama “The Heroic Era” and remains a popular cultural tourism destination.
