Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (黄南藏族自治州) is located in southeastern Qinghai Province (青海省) and takes its name from its location south of the Yellow River. Tongren (同仁市), the capital of Huangnan Prefecture, is known as the “Hometown of Tibetan Painting” and is the birthplace of Regong Art (热贡艺术), which includes Thangka painting, embroidery, sculpture, and Buddhist artwork.

Regong Art has been recognized as an important intangible cultural heritage, and the region has become one of the best places in China to experience Tibetan artistic traditions. The city is also home to Longwu Temple (隆务寺), an important Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Amdo Tibetan region.

Beyond Kanbula and Tongren, Huangnan’s counties offer diverse cultural and ecological experiences. Zeku County (泽库县) is famous for the Heri Stone Sutra Wall (和日石经墙), known as a “stone book of the world,” where countless Buddhist scriptures are carved into stone slabs.

Henan Mongolian Autonomous County (河南蒙古族自治县) preserves Mongolian grassland culture, while Jianzha County combines Yellow River scenery with traditional villages and rural tourism.
