Qinghai Province (青海省) occupies the northeastern part of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau and contains some of China’s most extensive high-altitude lakes, grasslands, snow mountains, salt lakes, deserts, wetlands and river-source ecosystems. Its tourism resources can be summarised through four qualities: vast landscapes, clean ecology, distinctive ethnic cultures and unusual plateau landforms.
Unlike provinces where attractions are concentrated around several cities, Qinghai’s major destinations are spread across enormous distances. Xining (西宁) is the main transport and service centre, while Qinghai Lake (青海湖), Chaka Salt Lake (茶卡盐湖), the Qaidam Basin (柴达木盆地), Yushu (玉树), Golog (果洛) and the Kunlun Mountains (昆仑山) require long road journeys and careful altitude planning.
As of 2026, Qinghai had four national 5A tourist attractions and 56 national 4A attractions. The four 5A attractions are Qinghai Lake Scenic Area (青海湖景区), Kumbum Monastery Scenic Area (塔尔寺景区), Huzhu Tu Homeland Tourism Area (互助土族故土园旅游区) and Ami Dongsuo Scenic Area (阿咪东索景区).
Qinghai’s World-Class Ecological and Geological Resources
Qinghai contains several internationally recognised natural areas. Qinghai Hoh Xil (青海可可西里) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017. The property protects an enormous high-altitude wilderness, major Tibetan antelope migration routes and alpine ecosystems generally lying above 4,500 metres.
Qinghai also contains two UNESCO Global Geoparks. Mount Kunlun UNESCO Global Geopark (昆仑山世界地质公园) extends through the high mountains southwest of Golmud, while Kanbula UNESCO Global Geopark (坎布拉世界地质公园) combines Yellow River landscapes, Danxia formations, ancient volcanic geology and Tibetan cultural heritage in Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (黄南藏族自治州). Kanbula received UNESCO Global Geopark status in 2025.
Sanjiangyuan National Park (三江源国家公园) protects major source regions of the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang rivers. It is primarily a protected national park rather than a conventional open-access scenic area. Ecological visits must follow approved routes, visitor plans, reservation systems or authorised concession programmes.
National 5A Tourist Attractions in Qinghai
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s national list records four 5A attractions in Qinghai. Ami Dongsuo, located in Qilian County (祁连县), became the province’s fourth 5A attraction in 2020.

Important Access and Conservation Notes
Hoh Xil Is Not an Open Off-Road Tourist Attraction
Visitors may experience Hoh Xil’s landscapes from legal transport corridors, designated interpretation points or authorised ecological programmes. Entering the protected interior for private exploration, off-road driving or unauthorised crossing is illegal and dangerous.
In 2025, police again intercepted unauthorised vehicle groups inside Hoh Xil. Authorities emphasised that individuals and organisations may not enter protected core areas for tourism, adventure or crossing without approval.
Nianbaoyuze Has Not Fully Reopened
Nianbaoyuze (年保玉则) in Jiuzhi County (久治县) stopped receiving tourists in April 2018 because of ecological damage and restoration needs. In July 2026, local authorities announced plans to establish the Nianbaoyuze 5369 Ecotourism Avenue (年保玉则“5369”生态旅游大道) and an official distant-viewing point in a general control zone, while stating that broader reopening would proceed only when conditions permit and in accordance with conservation rules.
Travellers should therefore not treat the former lake and trekking area as a normally operating scenic attraction. Use only officially announced roads, viewpoints and authorised programmes.
Choosing Qinghai Attractions by Travel Interest
For First-Time Visitors
Choose Xining – Kumbum Monastery – Qinghai Lake – Chaka Salt Lake – Qilian – Menyuan. This route combines religious culture, lakes, salt flats, grasslands, snow mountains and flower fields without entering the most remote parts of the province.
For Landscape Photography
Choose Qinghai Lake, Chaka Salt Lake, Dachaidan Emerald Lake, Water Yardang, Zhuo’er Mountain, Menyuan, Kanbula and Guide.
The strongest light generally occurs around sunrise and sunset, but high-altitude weather changes quickly. Leave enough flexibility for clouds, wind and road conditions.
For Tibetan and Ethnic Culture
Choose Kumbum Monastery, Huzhu Tu Homeland, Rebgong, Longwu Monastery, Yushu, Jiana Mani Stone Mound and monasteries in Golog.
For Geological Tourism
Choose Kanbula UNESCO Global Geopark, Mount Kunlun UNESCO Global Geopark, Guide Ashigong Geopark, Water Yardang, Emerald Lake and the Qaidam Basin.
For Ecological Study Tours
Choose Qinghai Lake, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Wildlife Zoo, authorised Sanjiangyuan ecological programmes, the Hoh Xil conservation corridor and approved wildlife-monitoring or community-conservation projects.
