Panjin is a coastal wetland city in Liaoning known for its Red Beach (红海滩), vast reed marshes, rice field landscapes, and the famous Liaohe River Estuary wetlands. It is one of the best destinations in Northeast China for combining ecological scenery, seafood culture, and slow countryside travel. The best experience comes from visiting during the red seaside season in autumn, planning transport in advance due to dispersed attractions, and staying near the wetland or city center for flexible day trips. Red Beach photography, river crab tasting, wetland birdwatching, and Tang-style cultural streets define the core travel rhythm of Panjin.
Best Time to Visit Panjin
The most recommended period is mid-September to mid-October, when the Red Beach (红海滩) reaches its peak color, the rice fields turn golden, and Panjin Hairy Crab (盘锦河蟹) is at its fattest stage. This is the strongest season for both photography and gastronomy, with ideal sunrise and sunset lighting over the wetlands.
Late April to June offers a quieter ecological experience. The Suaeda salsa (碱蓬草) begins to turn red, migratory birds such as black-faced spoonbills and red-crowned cranes pass through, and the reeds turn fresh green. It is one of the best periods for birdwatching and slow travel.
July to August is hot and humid with more mosquitoes, but suitable for beach activities at Jinbantan Beach (金帛滩) and indoor cultural attractions.
December to February brings frozen river landscapes along the Liaohe Estuary, snow scenery, and seasonal performances at Black Wind Pass Ancient Town (黑风关古镇) in Beilü Tianyuan, offering a strong northern winter atmosphere.
How to Get There & Around Panjin
External Transportation
High-speed rail is the most efficient option. Panjin Railway Station (盘锦站) is close to the city center and Red Beach area, with around 3 hours from Beijing and 1.5 hours from Shenyang.
Panjin North Station (盘锦北站) is farther from downtown and usually not recommended.
Flights arrive via Shenyang Taoxian International Airport (沈阳桃仙国际机场), followed by a 1-hour high-speed train to Panjin. Transfers from Dalian or Jinzhou are also possible.
Self-driving is the most flexible option, especially for multi-site itineraries. Routes from Beijing via Jingha Expressway and from Shenyang via Shenhai Expressway are commonly used.
Local Transportation
Main attractions are spread across districts: Dawa District (大洼区) for Red Beach and coastal areas, Xinglongtai & Shuangtaizi (兴隆台 / 双台子) for wetlands and culture, and Zhaoquanhe (赵圈河) for Beilü Tianyuan.
Car rental costs around 200 per day, offering the best flexibility for Red Beach exploration. Private car hire ranges from 200–300 per day for groups. Public buses such as Route 30 reach Red Beach but are slow and infrequent. Seasonal wetland shuttle buses operate between Red Beach and Dingxiang Ecological Area (鼎翔生态旅游区).

What to Eat in Panjin
Panjin Hairy Crab (盘锦河蟹) is the signature dish, especially in autumn. Farmed in rice fields, female crabs are rich in roe and males are full of fat. Local markets offer better value than scenic areas.
Wetland specialties include reed shoots, water bamboo shoots, Suaeda salsa dumplings, clams, mantis shrimp, and seasonal river fish.
Staple foods include Panjin rice (crab rice with fragrant texture), Goubangzi smoked chicken, and noodle dishes with fish broth.
Recommended dining spots include Liaohe River Fisherman Cuisine, Lao Yangtou Crab BBQ, and Erjiegou seafood markets where fresh seafood can be cooked on-site.
Travel Tips for Panjin
Red Beach photography is best early morning or late afternoon for optimal color contrast. Wear light-colored clothing for better photos and avoid unofficial ticket sellers.
For crab purchases, avoid tourist areas and choose local markets such as Huji Market or Erjiegou early markets. Female crabs have wider belly shells, males have pointed shells.
Mosquito protection is essential in wetlands—long pants and repellent are necessary.
Spring and autumn have strong temperature differences, so light jackets are recommended. Summer requires sun protection, while winter demands insulated clothing and waterproof footwear.
During National Day holidays, Red Beach becomes extremely crowded; late September or mid-October is better for a balanced experience.
