Liaoning Overview

Liaoning (辽宁), the only coastal and border province in Northeast China, occupies a strategic location in Northeast Asia. It borders the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea to the south, faces North Korea across the Yalu River, and connects China with Japan, South Korea, and Russia. Promoted under the tourism brand “Mountains and Sea in Harmony, Peace across Liaoning” (山海有情，天辽地宁), the province offers a diverse mix of Qing Dynasty culture, coastal resorts, border landscapes, ice and snow activities, and industrial heritage, making it a year-round destination.

Geography & Climate

Location: Northeast China; south borders the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea, east borders North Korea, northwest connects to Inner Mongolia, north to Jilin, southwest to Hebei.

Topography: Eastern Liaodong Mountains (辽东山地), western Liaoxi Hills (辽西丘陵), central Liao River Plain (辽河平原); terrain rises east and west, lowest in the central plain.

Climate: Temperate continental monsoon with distinct seasons. Spring (April–May) warms quickly and is windy; summer (June–August) is cool and rainy with average temperatures of 22–26°C; autumn (September–October) features clear skies and red-leaf scenery; winter (November–March) is cold and dry with abundant snow lasting 120–150 days.

Best Travel Seasons: May–October for mountain and coastal sightseeing and autumn foliage; December–February for ice and snow tourism and hot spring vacations.

• Shenyang Imperial Palace (沈阳故宫): Early Qing royal palace, one of China’s two existing imperial palaces, showcasing distinct Manchu architecture.
• Eastern and Northern Qing Tombs (清福陵 / 清昭陵): Royal mausoleums of the early Qing Dynasty, forming the core of the “Three Tombs Beyond the Pass” (关外三陵).
• Yongling Tomb (清永陵): Ancestor tomb of the Qing dynasty, located in Xinbin (新宾), Fushun.
• Wunü Mountain Fortress (五女山山城): Ancient capital of Goguryeo, UNESCO World Heritage, National 5A Scenic Area, Huanren County (桓仁县).
