Jiangxi Province (江西省) is located in southeastern China on the southern side of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It borders Zhejiang Province (浙江省) and Fujian Province (福建省) to the east, Guangdong Province (广东省) to the south, Hunan Province (湖南省) to the west, and Hubei Province (湖北省) and Anhui Province (安徽省) to the north. Covering approximately 166,900 square kilometres, Jiangxi is surrounded by mountains on three sides, while the Gan River runs northward through the province into Poyang Lake.
The province’s administrative geography closely reflects its natural landscape. Northern Jiangxi is organized around Poyang Lake (鄱阳湖), Mount Lushan and the Yangtze River; northeastern Jiangxi contains the porcelain, ancient-village and mountain tourism areas of Jingdezhen and Shangrao; central Jiangxi follows the Gan River through Nanchang, Yichun, Xinyu and Ji’an; western Jiangxi is dominated by the Luoxiao Mountains; and southern Jiangxi forms the extensive Hakka cultural region centered on Ganzhou.
Administrative Structure of Jiangxi Province
As of June 30, 2026, Jiangxi administered 11 prefecture-level cities and 100 county-level divisions, including 27 municipal districts, 12 county-level cities and 61 counties. Below the county level were 1,581 township-level divisions, consisting of 206 subdistricts, 841 towns and 534 townships, including eight ethnic townships.
Jiangxi therefore operates through a four-level system of province, prefecture-level city, county-level division and township-level division. Municipal districts usually contain the central urban areas of prefecture-level cities, county-level cities function as relatively independent urban and regional centers, and counties contain a mixture of county towns, smaller towns, rural communities, mountains, lakes and agricultural areas.
The 11 prefecture-level cities are Nanchang, Jingdezhen, Pingxiang, Jiujiang, Xinyu, Yingtan, Ganzhou, Ji’an, Yichun, Fuzhou and Shangrao. Nanchang is the provincial capital, while Ganzhou is the largest prefecture-level city by administrative area and contains the greatest number of county-level divisions.
Geography, Administration and Tourism Development
Jiangxi’s tourism resources are commonly organized around the interaction of red revolutionary heritage, green ecological landscapes and ancient cultural heritage. Provincial tourism planning encourages these three themes to be combined rather than developed separately.
The province’s administrative divisions provide travelers with clearly differentiated tourism regions. Municipal districts generally offer museums, transport hubs, historic streets and modern accommodation, while counties and county-level cities contain most of Jiangxi’s mountains, traditional villages, archaeological sites, tea-producing areas, hot springs and rural tourism resources.
Northern and northeastern Jiangxi have the province’s densest concentration of internationally recognized tourism resources, including Mount Lushan, Jingdezhen, Wuyuan, Mount Sanqingshan and Mount Longhushan. Central and western Jiangxi combine the Gan River, academies, ancient villages, hot springs, highland grasslands and revolutionary heritage. Southern Jiangxi is geographically larger and more dispersed, but it contains an exceptional concentration of Hakka enclosed houses, Song Dynasty urban heritage, revolutionary sites and mountain environments.
Nanchang Municipality
Nanchang (南昌市) is the capital and principal political, economic, educational and transportation center of Jiangxi. The Gan River divides the historic eastern city from the newer western urban districts, while the metropolitan area extends into surrounding counties and rural mountain regions.
The central districts contain Tengwang Pavilion (滕王阁), the August 1 Nanchang Uprising heritage, the Jiangxi Provincial Museum, historic neighborhoods and the main urban commercial areas. Xinjian District contains the Nanchang Han Dynasty Haihunhou State Archaeological Site, while Anyi County is known for the Anyi Ancient Village Cluster and Jiangyou merchant culture. Nanchang County and Jinxian County add wetlands, countryside tourism, religious sites and agricultural experiences.
Nanchang is the best gateway for travelers combining several parts of Jiangxi. High-speed railways, expressways and flights provide convenient connections with Jiujiang, Jingdezhen, Shangrao, Yichun, Ji’an and Ganzhou.
Jingdezhen Municipality
Jingdezhen (景德镇市) is internationally known as China’s historic porcelain capital. Its municipal districts contain museums, imperial-kiln remains, ceramic workshops, creative districts and historic kiln neighborhoods, while Fuliang County preserves the rural landscapes that supplied tea, timber, kaolin and transport routes to the porcelain industry.
Zhushan District contains the historic urban center, Taoyangli and major ceramic museums. Changjiang District includes contemporary cultural districts and workshops, while Fuliang County provides access to Gaoling, Yaoli Ancient Town, ancient kiln sites and mountain villages. Leping is known for traditional architecture, rural settlements, opera traditions and geological landscapes.
The municipality is suitable for two- to four-day cultural trips combining archaeological sites, working studios, ceramic markets, rural kiln communities and hands-on pottery experiences.
Pingxiang Municipality
Pingxiang (萍乡市) lies on Jiangxi’s western border with Hunan and developed historically through mining, trade and transport between the two provinces. Its tourism identity combines revolutionary history, industrial heritage, karst caves, rural culture and the highland landscapes of Mount Wugong.
Anyuan District is associated with the Anyuan workers’ movement and modern industrial history. Luxi County contains the principal Jiangxi entrance to Mount Wugong (武功山), known for high-altitude grasslands, hiking, camping and outdoor sports. Shangli and Xiangdong preserve rural landscapes, caves, traditional communities and local folk customs, while Lianhua County combines mountain ecology with revolutionary heritage.
Pingxiang is particularly suitable for outdoor travelers continuing between Changsha, Mount Wugong, Yichun and Nanchang.
Jiujiang Municipality
Jiujiang (九江市) occupies northern Jiangxi along the Yangtze River and Poyang Lake. Its administrative area includes mountains, wetlands, lakes, ports, historic towns and agricultural counties, giving it one of the province’s most varied tourism systems.
Lianxi, Xunyang and Chaisang districts form the main urban and transport area. Lushan City (庐山市) administers Mount Lushan and surrounding cultural landscapes, while Gongqingcheng and Ruichang provide modern urban, lake and industrial-cultural experiences. Yongxiu County includes important Poyang Lake wetlands and access to Wucheng, while Wuning and Xiushui are known for mountain and lake tourism. Duchang, Hukou and Pengze extend along Poyang Lake and the Yangtze River, while De’an contains rural and archaeological resources.
Northern Jiangxi itineraries can combine Jiujiang city, Mount Lushan, Lushan West Sea, Poyang Lake birdwatching areas and historic riverside communities.
Xinyu Municipality
Xinyu (新余市) is one of Jiangxi’s smallest prefecture-level cities and consists of Yushui District and Fenyi County. Its tourism resources are compact and accessible, making it suitable for short holidays and regional road trips.
The principal landscape is Fairy Lake (仙女湖), associated with the Qixi love legend and surrounded by islands, wetlands and countryside. The region is also known for ramie cloth, rural handicrafts, industrial development and cycling routes around the lake.
Fenyi County adds mountain landscapes, traditional villages and ecological tourism, while Yushui District provides the main railway, hotel and urban-service base.
Yingtan Municipality
Yingtan (鹰潭市) is located in northeastern Jiangxi and is one of the province’s smallest prefecture-level municipalities. Its administrative divisions are Yuehu District, Yujiang District and the county-level city of Guixi.
The municipality’s principal tourism resource is Mount Longhushan (龙虎山), a major center of Zhengyi Taoism and a representative Danxia landscape. The area combines Taoist temples, ancient cliff burials, river rafting, villages and religious culture.
Guixi also contains She ethnic communities, tea-growing landscapes and rural tourism resources. Yuehu District is the main railway and urban-service center, while Yujiang District is associated with traditional craftsmanship and rural culture.
Ganzhou Municipality
Ganzhou (赣州市) is the largest prefecture-level city in Jiangxi by area and administers 18 county-level divisions. It occupies most of southern Jiangxi and forms the cultural heartland of the Gannan Hakka people (赣南客家人).
Zhanggong District preserves Ganzhou’s historic city walls, pontoon bridge, traditional streets and Song Dynasty urban heritage. Nankang and Ganxian districts form part of the expanding metropolitan area, while the county-level cities of Ruijin and Longnan represent two major tourism themes: revolutionary history and Hakka enclosed-house culture.
Longnan, Quannan, Dingnan, Xinfeng, Anyuan and neighboring counties contain large numbers of Hakka enclosed houses, clan settlements and mountain villages. Ruijin, Yudu, Xingguo, Ningdu and Huichang preserve extensive revolutionary heritage. Anyuan is associated with Sanbaishan Mountain and the source region of the Dong River, while Dayu, Chongyi, Shangyou and Quannan contain forests, mountain passes and borderland cultures.
Because destinations are widely separated, southern Jiangxi is best explored by self-driving vehicle or private transport over five to ten days.
Ji’an Municipality
Ji’an (吉安市) lies in the middle Gan River valley and is the center of Luling Culture (庐陵文化). Its tourism resources combine academies, ancestral halls, ancient villages, ceramics, revolutionary heritage and the Luoxiao Mountains.
Jizhou and Qingyuan districts form the main urban area and contain Bailuzhou Academy, Qingyuan Mountain and access to the Jizhou Kiln. Ji’an County, Jishui, Yongfeng, Taihe and other counties preserve Luling scholarship, clan culture and rural architecture.
Jinggangshan City (井冈山市) is one of China’s most important revolutionary tourism destinations and also contains forests, waterfalls and mountain villages. Meipi Ancient Village in Qingyuan District, Diaoyuan Ancient Village in Jizhou District and traditional settlements across Jishui and Yongfeng demonstrate the region’s strong educational and clan traditions.
Ji’an is an important connecting point between Nanchang, Jinggangshan and Ganzhou.
Yichun Municipality
Yichun (宜春市) occupies west-central Jiangxi and contains one municipal district, three county-level cities and six counties. Its tourism identity combines hot springs, mountain forests, traditional medicine, Bronze Age archaeology and rural wellness tourism.
Yuanzhou District contains Mingyueshan Mountain (明月山) and Wentang hot-spring town. Zhangshu is historically known as an important center of traditional Chinese medicine and contains the Wucheng Bronze Age site. Fengcheng and Gao’an are regional urban and industrial centers with ancient settlements and rural tourism resources.
Jing’an and Tonggu are mountain counties suited to forest tourism, cycling and summer retreats. Fengxin and Yifeng contain bamboo forests and countryside landscapes, while Wanzai and Shanggao preserve traditional villages, folk culture and revolutionary heritage.
Fuzhou Municipality
Fuzhou, Jiangxi (抚州市) is a nationally recognized historic and cultural city associated with scholars, literature, opera and traditional villages. It should not be confused with Fuzhou in Fujian Province.
Linchuan District is associated with Tang Xianzu, Wang Anshi, Zeng Gong and the region’s long educational tradition. Dongxiang District and surrounding counties contain agricultural landscapes, historic settlements and local folk culture.
Nanfeng is known for Nuo traditions and citrus cultivation, while Zixi provides access to Dajue Mountain (大觉山) and forest tourism. Jinxi, Yihuang, Le’an, Chongren, Nancheng and Lichuan preserve extensive groups of ancestral halls, traditional houses and historical villages. Guangchang is known for lotus culture and rural landscapes.
Fuzhou has one of Jiangxi’s richest concentrations of traditional villages and is particularly suitable for architecture, theatre, literary and educational tours.
Shangrao Municipality
Shangrao (上饶市) occupies northeastern Jiangxi and borders Zhejiang, Fujian and Anhui. It is one of Jiangxi’s most important tourism regions, combining UNESCO heritage, ancient villages, Taoist culture, Danxia landforms and modern mountain resorts.
The central districts of Xinzhou, Guangfeng and Guangxin provide transport, accommodation and access to nearby valleys and mountains. Yushan County contains Mount Sanqingshan (三清山), while Yiyang County contains the Danxia landscape of Guifeng (龟峰). Qianshan is associated with Ehu Academy and Gexian Mountain, and Dexing contains mountain landscapes and mining heritage.
Wuyuan County (婺源县) is known for historic villages, ancestral halls, rapeseed flowers and the Huangling crop-drying tradition. Wangxiangu, Gexian Village and other new tourism districts have expanded Shangrao’s evening and resort tourism.
Poyang, Yugan and Wannian extend into the Poyang Lake region and are associated with wetlands, fishing, agriculture and prehistoric rice-cultivation heritage.

Planning a Tour through Jiangxi’s Administrative Regions
A first-time journey is most efficiently organized around three large regional circuits. The northern and northeastern route connects Nanchang, Jiujiang, Mount Lushan, Jingdezhen, Wuyuan and Shangrao and contains the province’s greatest concentration of internationally recognized destinations.
The western and central route connects Nanchang, Xinyu, Yichun, Pingxiang and Ji’an. It combines Fairy Lake, Mingyueshan hot springs, Mount Wugong, Luling culture and Jinggangshan and is particularly suitable for self-driving, hiking and educational tours.
The southern route begins in Ganzhou and continues through Longnan, Anyuan, Ruijin and other Hakka counties. Because county-level destinations are spread across a large mountain region, private transportation and a minimum of five to seven days are recommended.
