Nanjing (南京), known as one of China’s most important ancient capitals, is a city where history blends naturally with modern urban life. With a history of more than 2,500 years and serving as the capital of several dynasties, Nanjing is often described as the “Ancient Capital of Six Dynasties” and the “Cultural Center of China.”

The city’s tourism character can be summarized as “Ancient Capital Heritage, Mountain-Water-City Landscape, Revolutionary Memory, and Modern Vitality.”

Nanjing’s unique geographical pattern of Zijin Mountain (紫金山), Qinhuai River (秦淮河), Xuanwu Lake (玄武湖), and the Ming City Wall (明城墙) creates the famous landscape of “a city surrounded by mountains and rivers.” By 2024, Nanjing had 52 national-rated tourist attractions, including two national 5A scenic areas: Zhongshan Mountain Scenic Area – Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum Scenic Area (钟山风景名胜区—中山陵园风景区) and Confucius Temple–Qinhuai River Scenic Area (夫子庙—秦淮风光带). The Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum (明孝陵) is also listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

🏯 Ancient Capital Heritage: Zhongshan Mountain and Ming City Wall

Nanjing’s most iconic historical landscape is concentrated around Zijin Mountain (紫金山), the city’s green lung and cultural core.

Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum (中山陵) is one of Nanjing’s most famous landmarks. The grand axis, 392 stone steps, and blue-tiled architectural style create a solemn atmosphere. Standing at the top, visitors can overlook the city skyline and surrounding mountains.

Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum (明孝陵), the burial place of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, founder of the Ming Dynasty, is one of China’s finest imperial tomb complexes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stone animal statues along the Sacred Way (神道) become especially beautiful in autumn when surrounded by golden ginkgo trees.

The Nanjing Ming City Wall (南京明城墙) is one of the longest and best-preserved ancient city walls in the world. Walking along the wall provides excellent views of Xuanwu Lake, Zijin Mountain, and the modern city.

🌉 Qinhuai River Culture: Confucius Temple and Old Nanjing Life

The Confucius Temple–Qinhuai River Scenic Area (夫子庙—秦淮河风光带) represents the cultural and commercial heart of old Nanjing. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Qinhuai River area was famous for scholars, merchants, and traditional entertainment.

    Today, visitors can enjoy:

    • Night cruises on Qinhuai River
    • Traditional lantern displays
    • Local Nanjing snacks
    • Historic architecture
    • Ancient examination culture

Nearby, Laomendong Historic District (老门东) preserves the atmosphere of old southern Nanjing with traditional houses, stone streets, creative shops, and famous local foods. Compared with the more commercial Confucius Temple area, Laomendong offers a more authentic neighborhood experience.

🏛️ Museums, Modern History and Cultural Memory

Nanjing has many museums and memorial sites reflecting China’s long history and modern transformation.

Nanjing Museum (南京博物院) is one of China’s three largest museums and houses a vast collection of historical treasures. The Republican-era street exhibition area recreates the atmosphere of early 20th-century Nanjing and is one of the museum’s most popular sections.

The Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre (侵华日军南京大屠杀遇难同胞纪念馆) is an important historical memorial site. Through documents, artifacts, and exhibitions, it preserves the memory of wartime history and serves as a place for reflection and remembrance.

The Presidential Palace (总统府) records China’s modern political history, from the Qing Dynasty’s Liangjiang Governor-General Office to the Republic of China government headquarters.

🌿 Natural Landscapes and New Tourism Experiences

Beyond historical attractions, Nanjing also offers rich natural scenery.

Niushou Mountain Cultural Tourism Area (牛首山文化旅游区) has become one of Nanjing’s most popular modern landmarks. The spectacular Foding Palace (佛顶宫) combines Buddhist culture, architecture, and art, especially impressive during sunset and evening lighting shows.

Qixia Mountain (栖霞山) is one of eastern China’s best-known autumn destinations. Every November, the mountain turns red and golden with maple leaves, attracting photographers and nature lovers.

Xuanwu Lake (玄武湖) is Nanjing residents’ favorite urban leisure area. With islands, gardens, walking paths, and views of Zijin Mountain, it is ideal for cycling, walking, and relaxing.
